UCefViewPlayGround

UCefViewPlayGround is a demo and development host project for the UCefView Unreal Engine plugin.

UCefView embeds Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) browser views in Unreal Engine projects, making it possible to build in-game browsers, web-powered UI, and HTML-based tools with both UMG and Slate integration.

What's Included

  • Unreal Engine host project files for UE 5.0 through UE 5.8.
  • A trial binary build of the UCefView plugin for supported Unreal Engine versions.
  • Example UCefView widgets, browser window blueprints, actors, and sample web resources.
  • A first-person playground map for testing browser views in game.

Quick Start

  1. Clone this repository.

  2. Fetch Git LFS files (git lfs pull), including the versioned DLL, LIB and OBJ files.

  3. Close Unreal Editor, then prepare the plugin for your engine version:

powershell -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File ./Script/PrepareTrialPlugin.ps1 -EngineVersion 5.6
  4. Open the matching .uproject, for example UCefViewPG_5_6.uproject, and let Unreal Engine generate/build project files if prompted.

  5. In Project Settings > UCefView Settings, install and select an XCef SDK. Trial packages do not bundle XCef/CEF; they use the normal SDK Manager.

  6. Run the first-person playground map and explore the plugin's browser examples.

Repeat step 3 before opening a different engine version. Pre-build steps also call the same script, but an Editor can check plugin compatibility before running a build. Do not build/open different engine versions concurrently in the same checkout.

Plugins/UCefViewTrial/~Precompiled/UE5.0 through UE5.8 contain each version's Binaries/ and Intermediate/ as loose files. No ZIP extraction is used. The preparation script mirrors these two directories into Plugins/UCefViewTrial/ and ensures the shared .uplugin contains no EngineVersion field. Engine selection comes from the matching ~Precompiled/UE5.x directory. Mirroring removes stale files from the active directories without modifying ~Precompiled or shared content.

The plugin descriptor, Source/ (rules and public headers), Content/, Resources/ and Scripts/ are shared by all versions and must remain in place. Close Unreal Editor before switching versions. The previous top-level Trial/ ZIP directory and Plugins/~UCefView-Trial-Binaries-Content layout are not used.

The trial watermark is compiled into the plugin. Development Editor and Development/Shipping Game precompiled artifacts are included. Actual application packaging still requires the corresponding toolchain and a selected/installed SDK.

The trial plugin contains only binaries, required precompiled link inputs, public/generated headers and build rules, plugin assets, compiled translations, the plugin icon and the Win64 SDK preparation hook. Offline docs, localization authoring files, build configuration, other-platform hooks, private SDK headers and generated C++ sources are excluded. Use the online documentation linked below.

Build Notes

The bundled Win64 Trial binaries were built with the following MSVC toolsets. The compiler version can differ from the installed toolset directory version. The table records the engines and compilers used for the bundled files.

Unreal Engine MSVC toolset directory Compiler version
UE 5.0.3 14.29.30133 14.29.30159
UE 5.1.1 14.29.30133 14.29.30159
UE 5.2.1 14.34.31933 14.34.31948
UE 5.3.2 14.34.31933 14.34.31948
UE 5.4.4 14.38.33130 14.38.33145
UE 5.5.4 14.38.33130 14.38.33145
UE 5.6.1 14.38.33130 14.38.33145
UE 5.7.4 14.44.35207 14.44.35229
UE 5.8.2 14.50.35717 14.50.35738

If you run into build or load issues, make sure the matching Visual Studio and MSVC toolchain for your Unreal Engine version is installed. These precompiled packages target the listed installed engines; regenerating project files does not make them compatible with arbitrary custom engine builds.
