test(repo): add e2e_app, port native e2e suites, one app process per CI batch - #3105
Code changes are tested (add some information if not applicable)
Description of the pull request
Brings the Flutter e2e suite up to the native ones (Android androidTestE2eDebug, iOS UIKit and SwiftUI UI tests) and moves it from sample_app to a new app built only for e2e testing.
Coverage. 4 files and 82 tests → 23 files and 270 tests. 233 run on iOS and 232 on Android. 37 are skipped everywhere (plus 1 on Android only), each pointing at the Linear ticket that blocks it.
Gap cases added to message list, reactions, channel list and quoted replies.
SDK divergences found. The port found 17 places where the Flutter SDK behaves differently from native. They're filed as FLU-1083 to FLU-1099 under the epic FLU-1100. Each ticket has the code location, the native behaviour and the e2e test that reproduces it. Those tests are skipped with the ticket URL, and each ticket asks whoever fixes it to unskip them. FLU-1099 (HTTP 408 not retriable) blocks no test.
e2e_app. A small app built for the e2e suite, made with the SDK's own StreamChannelPage / StreamThreadPage.
No Firebase, push, location or configuration screen, so the Firebase pubspec stubs, pubspec_overrides.e2e.yaml and the CI "Use Firebase stubs" step are gone.
It has a few test-only actions the sample app couldn't offer: hard delete, copy message ID, open a message by ID, and a messages/channels search scope. These made channel search, hard delete and jump-to-a-thread-reply testable.
sample_app loses every e2e hook: the connection override, the connectivity stream, forced offline, the integration_test dev dependencies and the Sinatra gems.
The e2e Fastlane setup (Fastfile, Allurefile, test parser, log reader, iOS runtime script) and its Gemfile now live in e2e_app/. The workflows and composite actions point there, and setup-ruby takes a working-directory input.
Faster CI.
Up to 8 batches (was 3), split by test rather than by file. On a full run every batch gets 29–30 tests.
Each batch runs in one app process. The lane writes a gitignored integration_test/e2e_batch.g.dart that calls each test file's main(), so the batch builds and launches the app once instead of once per file. That saves about 77s per file on Android and about 170s per file on iOS, going by the earlier CI timings.
Test names don't change, so Allure history, --name selection and per-test retries still work.
Each test keeps its own file in the Allure testFile label, so failure videos still attach.
The trade-off: a test that leaks async work can now fail the rest of its batch instead of the rest of its file. The lane's existing post-completion check still stops the batch with a diagnosis.
The nightly run and the coverage run keep one process per file.
Also in here:
The scroll helpers now drag the first verticalScrollable. A single-line search field above a list has its own horizontal one.
When retries run out in a batched run, the error now names the tests that still fail instead of every file in the batch.
Tested locally
Full suite through run_e2e_test, 8 batches, one app process per batch:
Android (Pixel emulator, API 37)
iOS (iPhone 17, iOS 27.0)
Passed
232/232
233/233
Retries
0
1 (the mock server's per-test process didn't start within 45s; the retry passed)
Lane time per batch
329–471s
239–423s
Retries inside a batched run, using two temporary probe tests (removed afterwards). A test failing only on its first attempt was retried alone and passed. A test that always failed was retried until attempts ran out, and the lane failed naming only that test.
melos run analyze, plus a format check of the tracked files.
Not covered by local runs: the CI workflows themselves. Android e2e runs on this PR; iOS needs a manual workflow_dispatch.

Drain window in takeExpectedError also swallows unrelated framework errors.
After the first expected error, the new drain loop calls takeException() for two seconds and discards every result. It does not check whether a later error repeats the expected failure. A different framework error in that window is consumed. The test can then pass.
The base code already accepted the first error without matching it. This change extends the window in which any error is accepted silently. The effect is limited to test runs where a second, unrelated framework error occurs within two seconds after an expected failure.
The test still runs its own assertions after the drain. The assertMessageFailedToBeSent check in the call site still applies.
Suggested direction: after the first error, compare each later error with the expected failure before discarding it. Errors that do not match should be reported or rethrown. No safe diff is established from the inspected code, so none is proposed.

🟡 Minor · Stop a bounced message from matching read,… · user_robot_message_list_asserts.dart:635-651
Stop a bounced message from matching read, delivered, sent, or pending in sendingStatus.
sendingStatus matches a status from the message flags alone. It does not check isBouncedWithError. MessageDeliveryStatus.of resolves a bounced message to failed first, and StreamSendingIndicator paints nothing for failed. A bounced message that has a read or delivered flag, or a completed state, therefore matches the finder, but no checkmark or clock is shown. A helper assertion for such a message passes without checking a visible status.
The current e2e suite does not assert a status on a bounced message, so no test passes wrongly today. The gap is latent.
🐛 Suggested fix
bool hasStatus(StreamSendingIndicator it) {
final state = it.message.state;
+ // A bounced message resolves to `failed` and paints no status icon.+ final bounced = it.message.isBouncedWithError;
// The indicator picks its branch by priority — read, then delivered, then
// the message's own state — and `isCompleted` does not revert once the
// message is later delivered or read. So every state-based case has to
// rule those two flags out, or a read message would match `sent` too.

🟡 Minor · Scope the thread-list assertion to the tile that… · user_robot_message_list_asserts.dart:305-312
Scope the thread-list assertion to the tile that contains the parent text.
assertThreadInThreadList searches for the parent text and the reply count under the same scope, find.byType(StreamThreadListTile). It does not require both matches to come from one tile. If two threads are visible, the parent text can match one tile and the requested reply count can match the other. The assertion then passes for the wrong thread.
Trigger: the list shows two threads. The thread with the parent text has a different reply count than requested. The other thread shows the requested count, such as 1 reply. The assertion passes.
The current callers do not reach this path. Each thread-list test creates one thread, so the helper checks the correct tile today. A future test with two visible threads would not be protected.
Fix: find the tile that contains the parent text, then search for the reply count only inside that tile.

e2e_app/integration_test/message_list_test.dart:850-856 ⚠️ Potential issue | 🟡 Minor | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Unverified concern: Test gap: the pagination test uses assertMessageListPagination, whose supplied implementation says the mock hands over the whole history up front; reaching the oldest seeded message therefore does not establish that an older page was fetched.
Validation was inconclusive.
Potential consequence: The test titled user paginates the message list passes despite a broken network-pagination path.
Condition requiring verification: Network pagination stops requesting further history while the mock's initial query still returns all 60 messages.

🟡 Minor · Run all E2E tests for changes to the Fastlane runner. · Fastfile:449-457
Run all E2E tests for changes to the Fastlane runner.
A change limited to e2e_app/fastlane/ does not select any E2E test. The result gate then passes with no E2E job. A broken runner is not detected in the PR. It can only be found by the nightly run.
select_impacted_tests checks each changed file against a fixed set of path lists. e2e_app/fastlane/ is in none of them. A file that matches no list is skipped silently. It does not trigger a full run.
e2e_app/fastlane/Fastfile:444-453 lists run_all_paths. The list includes e2e_app/integration_test/allure, mock_server, pages, robots, support, e2e_app/android, e2e_app/ios, and e2e_app/pubspec.yaml. It does not include e2e_app/fastlane.
e2e_app/fastlane/Fastfile:489-495 sets impact_analysis sources to ['e2e_app', 'packages']. A Fastlane-only change passes this gate.
select_impacted_tests.rb:34-35 forces a full run only for files in run_all_paths.
select_impacted_tests.rb:50-86 is an if/elsif chain with no else. A Fastlane file matches no branch. It adds no tests and sets no reason.
select_impacted_tests.rb:88-93 adds tests only when they are missing from the coverage map. With a current map, the selection is empty.
The e2e_batches output is [] in this case (Fastfile:459-463). The android and ios jobs are skipped (.github/workflows/e2e_test.yml lines 59, 89, 96).
The E2E result job uses if: ${{ always() }}. It fails only when needs.*.result contains failure or cancelled. Skipped jobs pass, so the check is green.
The hypothesis conditions:
Selection does not conservatively run all for unmatched Fastlane paths. True.select_impacted_tests.rb:50-86 skips an unmatched path silently. The only conservative fallbacks are run_all for a missing or stale map (:37-41), an unknown diff (:31), a non-code unmapped source file (:63), and an unmapped declaration with no user (:79-80). None applies to e2e_app/fastlane/*.rb or Fastfile.
The required-result job accepts an empty batch selection. True. The result job passes when no batch runs (see above).
The consequence holds when the coverage map is present and current. If the map is missing or stale, select_impacted_tests.rb:37-41 runs all tests instead. That case does not match the hypothesis trigger.
The is_check_required gate has no definition in the checkout or in fastlane-plugin-stream_actions 0.4.16. Its behavior is unsettled. It does not change the outcome: a false gate selects nothing, and a true gate also selects nothing for this change.
Recommended change: add the Fastlane runner paths to run_all_paths. For example, add e2e_app/fastlane. Because run_all_paths matching happens before ignore_paths, this also runs all tests for a README.md change under that directory. Confirm how matches_any? treats directory prefixes before you apply this change. The gem file select_impacted_tests.rb line 200 onward was not read.

🟡 Minor · Workflow-only changes skip the E2E batch jobs, so a broken batch step can… · Fastfile:489-493
Workflow-only changes skip the E2E batch jobs, so a broken batch step can merge with a passing E2E result check.
The select job runs select_e2e_tests on every pull_request event. For a pull request whose commits do not touch e2e_app or packages, the gate returns false. select then writes e2e_batches=[]. The android, ios, and allure_launch_* jobs are skipped. The E2E result job is if: always() and fails only on a failure or cancelled need. Skipped needs do not fail it, so the check passes without running any batch.
The select job still runs. A failure in select_e2e_tests still fails E2E result. Errors in the batch steps do not, including the run_e2e_test invocation, the batch matrix, and the batch setup steps.
Trigger conditions:
The PR's commits do not change e2e_app or packages, or any such commit already has E2E result at success.
The head commit changes only .github/workflows/e2e_test.yml.
Mitigations:
workflow_dispatch runs run_all_reason, which selects every test.
The nightly E2E cron runs after merge.
Severity is minor. The gap affects CI only and has workarounds.

🟡 Minor · Guard connect against an overlapping attempt. · auth_controller.dart:121-133
connect sets Authenticating but does not reject a call while another attempt is in progress. When persistence is enabled, a second call can overwrite the SDK's current user while the first call waits on persistence. The first call then opens the WebSocket as the second user and reports that user as authenticated.
The overlap needs two chooser taps before the next frame replaces ChooseUserPage. Without persistence, the first call reads the user before the second call can overwrite it.
Reject a second call before it changes any SDK state:
🐛 Suggested fix
Future<void> connect({required User user, required String token}) async {
+ if (value is Authenticating) {+ throw StateError('A connection attempt is already in progress.');+ }
value = const Authenticating();
final client = _client ??= _buildStreamChatClient(debugConnectionOverride);
A hung attempt blocks later attempts. disconnect() returns early unless value is Authenticated, so only debugReset() clears a stuck Authenticating state.

🟡 Minor · Handle openMessage failures in search-result taps instead of calling… · navigation.dart:41-44
Handle openMessage failures in search-result taps instead of calling .ignore().
openMessage awaits client.getMessage(messageId) and, for a reply, client.getMessage(parentId). It has no try/catch. If either call throws, the future completes with that error and no route opens. The search-result tap calls .ignore() on that future, so the error is not reported and the user sees no result or feedback.
This path needs one of those lookups to fail. The repository does not show how the backend responds to a deleted or inaccessible parent. The silent failure applies to any such error.
This is in the e2e_app debug harness, not shipped library code. Catch the error in openMessage or in the tap handler, then show feedback or log it. Do not discard it with .ignore().

🟡 Minor · Keep the login failure visible after the chooser unmounts. · choose_user_page.dart:23-26
Keep the login failure visible after the chooser unmounts.
ChooseUserPage stores the login error in its own State. E2eApp replaces that page with a progress screen while connect runs. If the login fails after that replacement, the catch block skips the setState call, so Login failed: ... never appears. The user sees the chooser again with no error text.
Sequence:
_login calls authController.connect, which sets value to Authenticating first.
E2eApp renders a Scaffold with a CircularProgressIndicator for Authenticating. The chooser leaves the tree, and _ChooseUserPageState is disposed.
connect fails. It sets value to Unauthenticated and rethrows.
The catch in _login checks mounted, which is false, and skips the setState that stores the error.
The chooser rebuilds as a new state with _error == null, so the if (_error case final error?) line renders nothing.
Scope: the message is lost only when the failure arrives after the progress screen has been built. A failure that completes before that rebuild still updates the chooser. The defect affects only the e2e harness's diagnostic output, not the SDK or production app.
Fix direction: keep the error outside the chooser's State. For example, AuthController can store the last login error before it rethrows. The chooser can then read that value when it builds, and connect can clear it at the start of each attempt. This change spans two files, so this review does not propose an exact diff.

Make the participant-unpin check fail when any pinned label remains.
The step at line 87 says "the message shows no pinned label." Line 88 checks only that the exact Pinned by Count Dooku text is absent. If a different Pinned by … label remains, the check still passes. This is a coverage gap in the test. It does not show a production defect.
assertMessagePinnedLabel takes a non-null pinnedBy, so the test cannot select the attribution-agnostic finder that pinnedLabel(pinnedBy: null) already supports. Make pinnedBy nullable in the extension method and its chain wrapper, then pass pinnedBy: null in the test. Dart keeps an explicit null argument as null. The 'You' default still applies when the argument is omitted.

Assert the sent status after the image check in the upload scenarios.
The scenario at attachments_test.dart lines 25-27 checks only that the image is displayed. assertImage checks the image finder and its count. It does not read upload state or delivery status, so the scenario does not wait for the upload to succeed.
Add the sent-status check to the scenario. The file already uses this pattern in another scenario. assertMessageDeliveryStatus(MessageDeliveryStatus.sent) waits for the sent indicator on the target message. A message that stays in a failed state does not show that indicator.
Apply the same chain to the multiple-images scenario, which asserts assertImage(isDisplayed: true, count: 2).

Assert that the Giphy preview changes after Shuffle.
The test at e2e_app/integration_test/giphy_test.dart:182-186 taps Shuffle. It then checks only that a Giphy and the Send, Shuffle, and Cancel buttons are displayed. A Shuffle that leaves the same Giphy in the preview passes both checks. The Send step at lines 189-192 also checks visibility only, so it cannot detect a wrong Giphy.
The page robot exposes no identity for the preview. MessageListPage.list.giphy is find.byType(StreamGiphyAttachment), and giphyButton(label) matches button text only. Add a robot helper that reads an identifying field from the attachment, such as its URL, before the Shuffle tap. Then assert on that field after the tap.
Do not assert that the value always differs. A random provider can return the same Giphy, which would make the test flaky. Assert a change only when the mock server fixture guarantees a distinct result for the shuffle. If the fixture cannot guarantee that, control the mock response first.

Update the Giphy shuffle test around uploadGiphy to capture the preview
attachment’s identifying value before tapping Shuffle and verify it matches the
shuffled result only when the mock fixture guarantees a distinct response;
otherwise, control the mock response to make the result deterministic.
Add a negative search check to the first search test.
The first search test sends only 'Test' and waits for a search result containing 'Test'. A search that ignores the query returns that same message, so the check still passes. Add a second message that does not contain 'Test'. After the existing positive check confirms that results have loaded, assert that no search result contains that second message text. Use find.descendant(of: ChannelListPage.searchResults, matching: ...) with findsNothing in a helper, and reuse the existing search and settle steps.

Add a second message without “Test” to the first search test, then verify it is
absent from the loaded search results. Add a helper using find.descendant with
ChannelListPage.searchResults and findsNothing, and reuse the existing search
and settle steps while preserving the positive assertion for “Test”.
Add a cooldown check that the composer input cannot be edited.
The assertComposerIsDisabledInSlowMode doc comment says typing is ignored during slow mode. The method checks only that the cooldown placeholder is shown and the send button is absent. It never enters text or reads the input's editable state. None of its three callers in slow_mode_test.dart types after the call. A regression that keeps the input editable and hides Send would still pass these scenarios.
Add a bounded assertion to the method that the composer input is not editable while the cooldown is shown. Check the field's enabled or readOnly state, or assert that no editable field is present. Before you write the assertion, confirm how StreamMessageComposerInputField renders the field during cooldown. A programmatic enterText may not reproduce a user typing into a disabled field, so do not use it as the only proof.
If the input is not locked during cooldown, the check will fail. Treat that as a finding, not as a reason to weaken the assertion. If the check cannot be added yet, correct the doc comment so it describes only the checks the method performs:
Fallback: correct the doc comment
- /// Asserts the composer is locked by slow mode: typing is ignored and there- /// is no send button, only the countdown.+ /// Asserts the slow-mode cooldown is shown and the send button is hidden.

Stop the intentional offline drop from satisfying the token-expiry check.
assertTokenHasExpired returns once _disconnections is greater than zero. The counter starts at zero and increments on every non-connected status after assertConnected. In the offline test (allureId: '12675'), goOffline() waits for ConnectionStatus.disconnected. The check therefore passes before any token expiry is observed. The counter is never reset.
Resetting the counter after goOffline() does not isolate expiry. The WebSocket sets ConnectionStatus.connecting on connection attempts (packages/stream_chat/lib/src/ws/websocket.dart:238 and :310). wsConnectionStatusStream emits each distinct change. A reconnect after goOnline() can therefore increment the counter even when the token is still valid.
A replacement-token observation is the stronger direction. setUp passes tokenProvider: jwt ? (_) => server.get('jwt/get') : null (e2e_app/integration_test/support/stream_test_env.dart:56). Count invocations of this provider, reset the count immediately before goOnline(), and assert that at least one request occurs after the reconnect. Confirm first that the SDK's refresh path calls this provider when it reconnects with an expired token. If it does not, the assertion fails rather than passing falsely.

Do not reset the client after an unsuccessful unmount.
If pumpWidget throws a guarded-function conflict, this catch leaves the app mounted. debugReset then disposes the client that the mounted widgets still use. In a shared-process batch, later tests can fail from that retained tree. Complete the unmount before resetting the client, or stop the batch if the unmount cannot complete. (github.com)

The Android runner creates an AVD named test by default. If adb emu avd name fails or times out after the initial setup, android_avd_name returns nil. ensure_android_device then refuses to restart because avd is nil, and run_e2e_test marks all remaining runs as failed. Keep the terminal failure when restart_android_emulator itself returns false.

### Label scheme
* In general the `-latest` label is used for the latest OS image version that is GA.
* Before moving the `-latest` label to a new OS version we will announce the change and give sufficient lead time for users to update their workflows.
macOS source lives in this repository and is available for everyone. However, macOS image-generation CI doesn't support external contributions yet so we are not able to accept pull-requests for now.
We are in the process of preparing macOS CI to accept contributions. Until then, we appreciate your patience and ask you to continue to make tool requests by filing issues.
How does GitHub determine what tools are installed on the images?
For some tools, we always install the latest at the time of the deployment; for others, we pin the tool to specific version(s). For more details please see the Preinstallation Policy
How do I request that a new tool be pre-installed on the image? Please create an issue and get an approval from us to add this tool to the image before creating the pull request. What branch should I use to build custom image? We strongly encourage customers to build their own images using the main branch. This repository contains multiple branches and releases that serve as document milestones to reflect what software is installed in the images at certain point of time. Current builds are not idempotent and if one tries to build a runner image using the specific tag it is not guaranteed that the build will succeed.</excerpt>

# GitHub Actions: macOS 15 and Windows 2025 images are now generally available
macOS 15 and Windows 2025 images are now generally available for all GitHub-hosted runners. You can use these images in your workflows on GitHub-hosted standard or larger runners.
## Get started today
To use macOS 15 directly, update `runs-on:` in your workflow file to `macos-15`, `macos-15-xlarge`, or `macos-15-large`.
`jobs:
build:
runs-on: macos-15
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v4
- name: Build
run: swift build
- name: Run tests
run: swift test
`
To use Windows 2025, you can target the image directly on standard runners using `runs-on: windows-2025`. For larger runners, create a runner and select Windows Server 2025 in the Images UI console.
The `latest` tag will migrate to these images later in the year.
## Need support?
Keep in mind that the new runner images have different tools and tool versions than previous versions. To view the full list of software or report issues with your workflows when using the images, visit the runner-images repository.</excerpt>

Make the iOS timeout dependency explicit.
run_e2e_test sets guard to an empty string when command -v timeout finds no executable. The iOS setup actions do not install GNU coreutils. On a runner without timeout, a stalled flutter test runs without the per-run limit and can consume the 60-minute job timeout instead of reaching retry handling. Install coreutils and expose timeout, use a supported equivalent, or fail before starting the test.

Review comment at @e2e_app/fastlane/Fastfile at line 465:
Update the timeout handling in run_e2e_test so a missing timeout executable
cannot launch flutter test without the per-run limit; ensure iOS setup provides
a supported timeout command or fail before starting the test so retry handling
can proceed.

Description of the pull request
Brings the Flutter e2e suite up to the native ones (Android
androidTestE2eDebug, iOS UIKit and SwiftUI UI tests) and moves it fromsample_appto a new app built only for e2e testing.Coverage. 4 files and 82 tests → 23 files and 270 tests. 233 run on iOS and 232 on Android. 37 are skipped everywhere (plus 1 on Android only), each pointing at the Linear ticket that blocks it.
