**Invalid settings pass policy check**
When the YAML contains a retention block and other top-level entries but omits model, `_maybe_load_config` validates only `retention` and returns a namespace, discarding the remaining keys instead of applying `ForgeConfig`'s `extra="forbid"` validation; `--check-policy` reports success with an incomplete or misleading policy report.
Validate the full top-level configuration, including unrelated keys, before returning the retention-only namespace.

**Secrets appear in error output**
When a retention-only YAML value containing a secret fails validation, `RetentionConfig`'s `ValidationError` includes rejected input values, and `_maybe_load_config` embeds `str(e)` in a `ConfigError` that the CLI prints or logs, exposing the secret in terminal or CI output.
Sanitize validation errors before including them in `ConfigError`, omitting rejected input values.

<issue_to_address>
**Null retention is rejected**
When a retention-only YAML file has `retention: null` and no `model` key, `_maybe_load_config` rejects a null `retention` value as a non-mapping, even though `ForgeConfig.retention` is optional and accepts `null`; `--check-policy` therefore exits with a config error instead of treating the policy as unset.
Treat `retention: null` as an unset retention block and return a config object whose `retention` is `None`.

<issue_to_address>
**Invalid encoding escapes config errors**
When the retention-only config file contains invalid UTF-8 bytes, `safe_load` reads the text file and can raise `UnicodeDecodeError`, which is not a `yaml.YAMLError`; `_maybe_load_config` does not wrap it and `_run_purge_check_policy` does not catch it. The command therefore emits an unstructured traceback instead of its config-error response, breaking JSON-mode consumers.
Catch `UnicodeError` while reading the file and wrap it as `ConfigError` so the existing structured error path handles it.

**Configured retention can be ignored**
When the retention-only loader discards the configured horizon and returns default retention settings, the test still passes if the retention-only loader discards the configured value and uses default retention settings: the empty output directory yields an empty report, and the assertions only check that the report has the expected keys. The test therefore does not catch the check-policy path applying the wrong retention settings.
Add an aged artefact to the test directory and assert the report reflects the configured 30-day horizon.

Hi @chiragjangiir, thank you for picking up #1054 so quickly and for the clear description. The direction is right: accepting a file that holds only retention: is the behaviour we want, and --check-policy reads nothing from the loaded config except .retention, so the approach is safe at runtime.
We checked out the branch on top of development (735a02f) and ran it.
- The case from the issue now works: a file with only
retention:returns a report and exits 0. - An invalid value (
ephemeral_artefact_retention_days: -5) exits 1 with the structured JSON error.
A few things need to change before we can merge. Each one comes with a concrete fix, which we ran through the full local gauntlet (all green).
Required changes
1. CI is red: two lint errors and the module-size budget.
-
ruff checkreportsI001(import order) in both files, andruff formatwould reformat_purge.py.ruff check --fix . && ruff format .fixes both. -
forgelm/cli/subcommands/_purge.pyis a deferred-split module with only 5 lines of headroom intools/check_module_size.py. The PR takes it to 1259 lines against a 1224 budget, which failstests/test_check_module_size.pyand thevalidatejob. Please do not raise the budget.Instead, move the loader into
forgelm/cli/_config_load.py, the CLI's config-loading module. It has plenty of room, and the retention-only rule then lives next toload_config's other callers. This version passed the full gauntlet for us:# forgelm/cli/_config_load.py (add `from typing import Optional` and import RetentionConfig from ..config) def load_retention_policy(config_path: Optional[str]) -> Optional[RetentionConfig]: """Return the ``retention:`` block that ``forgelm purge --check-policy`` reports against. The file is either a full ForgeLM config or one whose only top-level key is ``retention``: a scheduled retention report needs no training config (#1054). Any other top-level key makes it a full config, validated as one, so a misspelt ``retension:`` fails instead of being ignored. Raises ``ConfigError`` or ``OSError`` as ``load_config`` does. """ if not config_path: return None with open(config_path, encoding="utf-8") as fh: try: data = yaml.safe_load(fh) except yaml.YAMLError as exc: raise ConfigError(f"Invalid YAML syntax in {config_path}: {exc}") from exc if not (isinstance(data, dict) and set(data) == {"retention"}): return load_config(config_path).retention if data["retention"] is None: return None try: return RetentionConfig.model_validate(data["retention"]) except ValidationError as exc: raise ConfigError(f"Configuration validation failed:\n{exc}") from exc
Then make three changes in
_run_purge_check_policy:- import it with
from .._config_load import load_retention_policy; - call
retention = load_retention_policy(getattr(args, "config", None)); - use
retentionwhere the code now readsconfig_loaded.retention, and change theNonecheck toif retention is None:.
--check-policywas the only caller of_maybe_load_config(..., strict=True). Please also remove thestrictparameter, its docstring paragraph and theif strict: raisebranch, so that no dead option is left behind. With these changes_purge.pygoes down to 1212 lines. - import it with
2. Only a file whose single top-level key is retention should skip full validation. The current check, "retention" in yaml_data and "model" not in yaml_data, also accepts files with other keys and ignores those keys silently. Before this PR, both of these files exited 1 with validation errors:
| File | With this PR |
|---|---|
retention: plus a misspelt retension: {staging_ttl_days: 1} |
Exit 0 with "no violations": the operator's 1-day staging horizon is dropped and the 7-day default is used. |
retention: plus a training: block but no model: |
Exit 0: the half-written training config is never reported. |
--check-policy loads its config strictly on purpose, so that a mistake in the file is never mistaken for "no violations". ForgeConfig rejects unknown keys for the same reason. The helper above checks set(data) == {"retention"} and sends every other file through load_config, which reports the full errors. This also resolves the docstring mismatch PR Lens pointed out (the docstring says "lacks training/model keys" while the code checks only model).
3. The success test should prove that the configured horizon is used. We replaced the loader with one that ignores the file and returns RetentionConfig() defaults: both new tests still passed, because the output directory is empty and the test checks only the JSON shape. This test fails on that version and passes on yours. It uses a 60-day-old report because 60 days is past the configured 30-day horizon but within the 90-day default. A 120-day-old file, as suggested in one bot comment, would exceed both horizons and could not tell them apart.

assert ei.value.code == 1Keep your test_check_policy_retention_only_invalid_exits_config_error; it is good as it is.
4. Record the behaviour in the purge reference. #1054's first criterion asks for the chosen behaviour to be recorded. In the --check-policy section, add one sentence at the end of the paragraph that starts "Read-only scan." / "Salt-okunur tarama." (line 59 in both files).
docs/reference/purge_subcommand.md:
The config can be a full training config or a YAML file whose only top-level key is `retention:`; a file with any other top-level key is validated as a full config.
docs/reference/purge_subcommand-tr.md (the Turkish sentence, ready to paste):
Config, tam bir eğitim config'i ya da tek üst düzey anahtarı `retention:` olan bir YAML dosyası olabilir; başka bir üst düzey anahtar içeren dosya tam config olarak doğrulanır.
5. CHANGELOG. Add a line under ## [Unreleased] → ### Changed, for example: "forgelm purge --check-policy --config accepts a file whose only top-level key is retention:; a file with any other top-level key is still validated as a full config (#1054)."

…odeTech#1054) Finish the retention-only config support along the lines of the review: - Move the loader to forgelm/cli/_config_load.py as _load_retention_policy(). Only a file whose single top-level key is `retention` skips full validation; any other key (a misspelt `retension:`, a partial `training:` block) goes through load_config and exits 1 instead of being ignored. - Validate the block with hide_input_in_errors, as ForgeConfig does, so a validation error names the field without echoing its raw value. - `retention: null` gives the "nothing to enforce" note, as in a full config; a missing file keeps load_config's not-found message. - Remove the now-unused `strict` parameter of _maybe_load_config; _purge.py goes from 1259 LOC (over its 1224 budget) to 1213. - Tests: the configured horizon is the one applied (a 60-day-old report against a 30-day horizon), other top-level keys mean a full config, the null block, hidden raw input and a missing file. - Record the behaviour in the purge reference, the GDPR erasure guide and the GDPR user-manual page (EN + TR), and in CHANGELOG.
