A new section at /pulsar-lab/ (CN) and /pulsar-lab/en/ for learning about pulsars. /pulsars/ (the ledger) is untouched.

Real or simulated

There is no public live pulsar feed a static page could use, so the page simulates observations, but from real numbers:

  • ATNF catalogue periods, DMs, distances and declinations (13 well-known pulsars, rounded)
  • Published flux densities across frequency for each pulsar (lib/pulsar-fluxes.json, from the MIT-licensed pulsar_spectra compilation; scripts/pulsar_fluxes.py rebuilds it)
  • Noise from the radiometer equation for four telescopes (25 m dish, Murriyang/Parkes, Green Bank, FAST), with sky temperature; telescopes can only see pulsars their latitude allows
  • Dispersion delay 4.149 ms × DM / f²; scattering from the Bhat et al. (2004) relation

What is on the page

  • Lighthouse animation: beams sweeping, the pulse trace a telescope receives
  • Two kinds of frequency: a time window from 0.5 ns to 2 s showing the 1420.55 MHz carrier against the 339 Hz rhythm (Ross 128 b's beacon vs J1909−3744 itself)
  • Observatory: pulsar, telescope and band; scrolling raw waterfall with the dispersion sweep; listen to it (with or without noise); 10-minute observation played in 30 s
  • Analysis tools on that observation: FFT period search (harmonic summing, sifting, DM-trial ladder), dedispersion (S/N vs DM), folding (phase-time plot, S/N vs period with zoom), measured spectrum
  • Mystery signal: random period and DM to find with the tools; the page says when you have found it
  • Roster table, honest "what is real" notes, cross-links to signals, archive, ledger, drift, script, glyph-cli, exoplanet explorer, Light-Year Canon and the phase-1 book
  • Menu + footer entries in kit/nav.*.json, cards on both home pages

Tests

npm test: 37 pass (10 new in tests/pulsarlab.test.mjs: dispersion, flux fits, profiles, visibility, dedispersion/folding peak at truth, FFT finds a pulsar, sound range). Checked in Chromium at desktop and 390 px phone width with no console errors and no horizontal scroll.

…alysis tools

A new section at /pulsar-lab/ (CN) and /pulsar-lab/en/. No live public pulsar feed
exists, so it simulates observations from real numbers: ATNF catalogue periods, DMs,
distances and declinations, and published flux densities across frequency
(lib/pulsar-fluxes.json, from pulsar_spectra; scripts/pulsar_fluxes.py rebuilds it).
Noise follows the radiometer equation for four real telescopes.

- Lighthouse animation of the beams and the pulses a telescope receives
- "Two kinds of frequency": a zoomable time window from nanoseconds to seconds that
separates the radio carrier from the spin rhythm, tied to Ross 128 b's 1420.55 MHz
beacon keeping J1909-3744's 339 Hz beat
- Observatory: pulsar, telescope (visibility by declination) and band; scrolling raw
filterbank waterfall showing the dispersion sweep; sound of the pulsar
- Analysis tools on the same observation: FFT periodicity search with harmonic
summing, sifting and a DM-trial search; dedispersion with S/N vs DM; folding with
phase-time plot and S/N vs period; the measured spectrum
- A random "mystery signal" to find with the tools
- Menu and footer entries in kit/nav.*.json, home-page cards, cross-links
