- Line 74: Update the handling of try_to_load_from_cache so only a string path
is returned; convert non-path results, including the cached-missing sentinel, to
an empty string before passing the result to os.path.isfile.

Changes requested: the fix looks sound, but the silent-loss-of-quantizers regression has no checked-in test.
Needs action:
- Add a subfolder round-trip regression in
tests/unit/torch/opt/plugins/test_diffusers_save_load.py, using the existing state/output tester and a parent without weights; see inline comment. - Add mocked cache-lookup tests in
tests/unit/torch/opt/plugins/test_hf_patching.pyfor subfolder filenames, cached paths, cache misses, and the negative-cache sentinel.
No action needed:
- The change reuses the existing restoration helper and preserves default lookup and saving behavior. The reported standalone reproducer supports the fix, but does not protect CI against regressions.

LGTM: prior correctness and coverage concerns are resolved; human sign-off remains for the justified existing-test extension.
Needs action:
- Confirm the
test_unet_save_restoreextension intests/unit/torch/opt/plugins/test_diffusers_save_load.py: it retains direct-directory coverage and state/output assertions while adding offline subfolder loading.
No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since the last review: negative-cache sentinel handling, the subfolder round-trip regression, and mocked cache-lookup coverage.
- The fix reuses the shared restoration helper and preserves default lookup and saving behavior.
- Tests were inspected, not executed during this review.
What does this PR do?
Type of change: Bug fix
Loading a Diffusers component with
from_pretrained(parent, subfolder="unet")finds its weights in the component directory, but ModelOpt still looks formodelopt_state.pthin the parent directory. The load can succeed while dropping the saved quantizers.Pass the component subfolder through ModelOpt's state lookup for local directories and existing Hub cache entries. Calls without
subfolderand checkpoint saving retain their existing behavior; no download behavior is added.Usage
Testing
Local CPU environment: Python 3.12.10, PyTorch 2.12.0+cpu, Diffusers 0.40.0, Transformers 5.5.4.
test_diffusers_save_load.py::test_unet_save_restore: 2 passed, covering direct-directory and parent + subfolder loading with the existing ModelOpt state/output assertions. The parent contains no component weights.test_hf_patching.py::test_get_modelopt_state_path_cached: 4 passed, covering the default filename, subfolder cache hit, cache miss, and negative-cache sentinel with a mocked Hub cache lookup.845dc9b16d, while the direct case passes; the negative-cache case fails against26b987f9eb, while the other three cache cases pass. All six pass with the current source (UNet calls: 0.31s / 0.21s).tests/unit/torch/opt/plugins/test_transformers_save_load.py::test_causal_lm_save_restore: 2 passed (LlamaForCausalLMandAutoModelForCausalLM).Validation ran offline on CPU. A separate temporary probe also verified real on-disk Hub cache hits, misses, and negative entries with and without a subfolder. End-to-end Hub model loading, GPU inference, and other Diffusers architectures were not validated.

subfolderretain their behavior.CONTRIBUTING.md: N/A — neither.Additional Information
This change does not alter Diffusers' weight selection when both the parent and component directory contain same-named weights; that separate directory-layout edge case is discussed in huggingface/diffusers#7140.
