Summary

  • FilterParser::filterExpresion() now rejects expressions and values that are not valid UTF-8, and values with characters outside the BMP (emoji), before any query runs. The clients get a 412 instead of a 500 (MySQL 1267) or an unfiltered result.
  • The exception messages never echo the expression or the value, so JsonResponse can always encode them (filter=%DA==x and filter=%DA returned 500 because of this).
  • OAuth2SummitAttendeesApiController::getAttendeesBySummit() parses its filter inside processRequest, so any FilterParserException there returns 412.
  • The second urldecode stays: a literal + sent as %2B by openstack-uicore-foundation depends on it.

Tests

  • New tests/FilterParserEncodingTest.php, added to the integration-tests matrix in push.yml.
  • HTTP tests in OAuth2MembersApiTest, OAuth2AttendeesApiTest and OAuth2SummitEventsApiTest.
  • The new tests that expect a 412 or a FilterParserException fail on main (500, or 200 with every member) and pass with the fix. C%2B%2B, José, € and 日本 keep working.
  • OAuth2AttendeesApiTest::testAddAttendeeTicket fails with and without this change ("Can not delete ticket type ... has sold tickets").

Out of scope

Filters backed by latin1 columns still return 500 for characters outside latin1, and original_filter in speaker and submitter emails is not validated in the triggering request. Both are described in the ClickUp task.

Before deploy, check the charset of Name in SummitSponsorshipAddOn and SummitSponsorshipAddOnType in production. After deploy, check that the events/published requests return 412 and that the Loki query for Illegal mix of collations (utf8mb3_ returns no lines over 7 days.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Filtered attendee, member, and event requests now handle invalid UTF-8 and unsupported emoji values safely, returning error responses instead of malformed responses.
    • Encoded plus signs and supported non-ASCII text are preserved in filters.
    • Invalid filter parsing for attendee requests now follows the endpoint’s standard request error handling.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for filter encoding, validation errors, and safe error responses across attendee, member, and event requests.

📝 Walkthrough

Filter parsing now validates UTF-8 and rejects values outside the BMP. The attendee endpoint handles filter parsing through processRequest. Parser and API tests cover valid encoded values and invalid filter requests.

Changes: Filter expression encoding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate filter encoding
app/Http/Utils/Filters/FilterParser.php, tests/FilterParserEncodingTest.php, .github/workflows/push.yml
The parser rejects invalid UTF-8 expressions and values, and rejects values outside the BMP. Tests cover accepted and rejected inputs and JSON-safe exception messages. The workflow runs the new parser test suite.
Handle filter errors in API requests
app/Http/Controllers/Apis/Protected/Summit/OAuth2SummitAttendeesApiController.php, tests/oauth2/OAuth2AttendeesApiTest.php, tests/oauth2/OAuth2MembersApiTest.php, tests/oauth2/OAuth2SummitEventsApiTest.php
Attendee filter parsing and setup now run inside processRequest. API tests cover invalid filters and accepted encoded values across attendee, member, and scheduled-event endpoints.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to d088a

Invalid filters are handled by the attendee request boundary, and the supplied tests cover the intended encoding cases. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains.

valid UTF-8 before applying the wrapper regex, so malformed trailing bytes are
rejected rather than hidden by extraction; add a test covering a malformed
