…client secret
Clients registered with a public key pass `private_key` (PEM or JWK) instead
of `client_secret`, with an optional `key_id`:
Pipedream(client_id=..., private_key=..., project_id=..., project_environment=...)
The SDK signs a short-lived client assertion (RFC 7523) for each token
request: ES256 or RS256 inferred from the key, iss/sub = client ID, aud =
the API's issuer (the base URL's origin), a 60s lifetime and a random
single-use jti. Token caching is unchanged. Token requests authenticated
with an assertion are retried with a newly signed assertion, since the API
rejects a reused one. Works for Pipedream and AsyncPipedream. client_secret
and private_key can't be combined; PIPEDREAM_PRIVATE_KEY and
PIPEDREAM_KEY_ID are read from the environment.
Signing needs the new optional extra: pip install "pipedream[private-key]"
(pyjwt[crypto]). Client-secret users need nothing new. CI installs the
extra.
The oauth_tokens create methods match the API spec change (optional
client_secret, client_assertion_type, client_assertion) that the next Fern
regeneration produces. Version 2.2.0.

WalkthroughThe SDK adds private-key JWT authentication for synchronous and asynchronous clients. It supports PEM and JWK keys, assertion-based OAuth token requests, token caching, and retries. Client constructors accept private keys and key IDs, and the package adds an optional dependency extra. ChangesPrivate-key JWT authentication

…utput Fern's Python generator drops dependency extras, so pyjwt[crypto] would regenerate as plain pyjwt without cryptography. List cryptography as its own optional dependency of the private-key extra instead, exactly as the generator emits it from fern/generators.yml (verified with a local generation). Also take the generator's oauth_tokens docstring examples. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <[email protected]>

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff
An explicit client_secret equal to the environment value is treated as an environment value.
Consider a caller that passes client_secret explicitly, and the value equals PIPEDREAM_CLIENT_SECRET. If PIPEDREAM_PRIVATE_KEY is also set, line 61 raises a "Both ... are set" error. The caller expected the explicit secret to win. The cause is that os.getenv defaults are evaluated when the module is imported, so the code cannot tell whether the caller passed the argument. Use a sentinel default for client_secret and read the environment inside __init__.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Use a monotonic or timezone-aware clock for token expiry.
dt.datetime.now() returns a naive local time. A DST transition or a wall-clock change can shift that time. The cached token can then be used after it expires, or it can be refreshed too early. Use dt.datetime.now(dt.timezone.utc) at lines 126, 137, 141, 144, 176, 180 and 183. The generated provider probably uses the same pattern, so this is a narrow risk. Based on learnings: "Use datetime.now(timezone.utc) ... to get an explicit, timezone-aware UTC timestamp instead."

What
API clients can now authenticate with a private key instead of a client secret (RFC 7523
private_key_jwt). The client is created in the Pipedream UI with Authentication: Public key; you register the public key with Pipedream and keep the private key.pip install "pipedream[private-key]"Everything else works exactly as it does with a client secret.
AsyncPipedreamtakes the same arguments. The SDK does all of the client assertion work:issandsubare the client ID.audis the API's issuer identifier, the origin of the base URL (https://api.pipedream.com, or your custombase_url). It also setsiat, a 60-secondexp, a random single-usejti, andtyp: client-authentication+jwt.jti. Only 408, 429, 5xx and network or timeout errors are retried;401 invalid_clientisn't.key_id: sent as the JWTkidheader. A JWK's ownkidis used automatically. The API doesn't require it.PIPEDREAM_PRIVATE_KEYandPIPEDREAM_KEY_ID, alongsidePIPEDREAM_CLIENT_SECRET.client_secretandprivate_keytogether raisesValueError. With neither passed, setting both env vars also raises. An explicitly passedprivate_keywins over a secret in the environment. Why an optional extra?
Signing needs PyJWT and
cryptography. Both are optional dependencies of aprivate-keyextra, like the existingaiohttpextra, so client-secret users don't pull in a crypto dependency. It's imported lazily. Without it, passingprivate_keyraisesImportError: Authenticating with a private key requires the "private-key" extra: pip install "pipedream[private-key]". Client-secret auth works without the extra; I checked that in a clean venv.Changes
src/pipedream/private_key_jwt.py(new, in.fernignore)ClientAssertionSignerparses and validates the key once (PEM: PKCS#8, PKCS#1 or SEC1; or JWK). The sync client passestoken=provider.get_token. The async client sets an async token getter, mirroring the generated async OAuth wiring. Token requests go through their own token-less client wrapper over the samehttpxclient, as in the generated flow.src/pipedream/oauth_tokens/{client,raw_client}.py(generated)create()takes an optionalclient_secret, plusclient_assertion_typeandclient_assertion. This matches pipedreamin#10884's OpenAPI change, so the next Fern regeneration produces the same signature.pyproject.toml,poetry.lockpyjwtandcryptography, both in aprivate-keyextra. These lines are exactly what Fern generates from pipedreamin#10884'sgenerators.yml. The lock file was regenerated with Poetry 1.8.5 (the file's own version) using--no-update, so it only addspyjwt, cryptography, cffiandpycparser. Poetry 1.5.1, which CI uses, reports it as consistent..github/workflows/ci.ymlprivate-keyextra for mypy and tests.pyproject.toml,.fern/metadata.jsonandcore/client_wrapper.py(the headers), the same files the last release bumped.CLAUDE.md,.fernignoreCompatibility
No breaking changes for client-secret users. Constructor behavior, env vars and token handling are unchanged, and no new required dependencies are added.
The only new failure mode: with neither credential passed, having both
PIPEDREAM_CLIENT_SECRETandPIPEDREAM_PRIVATE_KEYset raises instead of guessing. One caveat with the async client:
AsyncPipedream.raw_access_tokenreturnsNonefor private-key clients. It already does for async client-secret clients, because the token is fetched asynchronously.Testing

Dylan ran it against both the PR branch and a simulated Fern regeneration of it, and every step passed.Regeneration (verified locally)
I generated the SDK with
fern generate --localfrom pipedreamin#10884 (spec plusgenerators.yml), applied it to this branch the wayfern-api[bot]does, and tested the result:pyproject.tomlandpoetry.lockcome out unchanged, and the custom files are untouched.oauth_tokenssignatures are identical. The regeneration only addsBadRequestError/UnauthorizedErrorhandling for the new 400/401 responses. Both subclassApiError, so the retry logic, which never retries 4xx, is unaffected.pip install ".[private-key]"installs PyJWT and cryptography. This run caught that the generator drops dependency extras (
pyjwt[crypto]→ plainpyjwt). That's fixed by declaringcryptographyas its own optional dependency, here and in pipedreamin#10884's Fern config.Follow-ups
