feat: Updated editor body colors (BLO-1232) (BLO-1240) (BLO-1331) - #3206
This PR updates editor body colors (UI elements like menus and toolbars are out of scope) to hit WCAG 2.0 AA contrast requirements and converts their CSS variables to use the OKLCH color space instead of RGB. OKLCH is a polar color space similar to HSL, but has 2 key advantages:
It supports wide color gamuts. Computer displays can't reproduce all colors that the human eye can see, and the color gamut that a display is capable of showing varies. This means that the same HSL color can end up looking washed out on one display and oversaturated on another, unless they're calibrated to the same gamut. OKLCH uses arbitrary values for its equivalent saturation and lightness rather than being mapped directly to display pixel values, so colors look much more consistent across different displays.
It takes into account human perception of color and contrast. In HSL, a gradient created by sweeping across all hue values will have noticeable darker and lighter bands as some colors appear brighter or darker to us at the same luminance level. OKLCH accounts for this, so sweeping the hue results in a much smoother gradient.
The second advantage is useful to us as it makes it much easier to ensure each highlight color has the same relative saturation and brightness. With HSL/RGB, it takes a lot of trial and error to do this.
The new color palette targets the P3 gamut. While not all modern displays have good coverage of P3 (sRGB is standard for most web content, P3 is typically used for consumer HDR content), this is a deliberate decision as it allows us to increase the vibrancy of highlight colors with a small tradeoff to consistency for displays which don't support P3. If we target sRGB, colors end up looking overly washed out, even if they will be more consistent across devices.
While the most significant changes have been made to highlight colors, the following colors have been adjusted too to hit the contrast requirements:
Dark mode quote block text
Dark mode add file button text
Toggle block "add block" button text
Verified that axe scans from out a11y tests no longer report contrast issues. An important thing to note is that placeholder contrast is currently untested and so placeholder colors have not been updated as part of this PR, only colors which have been caught to not pass WCAG contrast requirements when running an axe scan of the editor body. See #3205 for more info.
There's a temporary highlight-color-comparison.html file to inspect the old vs new highlight colors (to be removed before merging). The screenshots below are taken from it.

Walkthrough
The PR adds browser and screen-reader accessibility testing, associated CI and documentation, and new accessibility test coverage. It also updates light and dark editor colors, adds a color-combinations playground example, and clears persisted toggle state in a versioning test.
Changes: Accessibility testing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Test harness and execution tests/a11y/*, tests/package.json, vite.config.ts, tsconfig.json
Adds browser and screen-reader test modes, shared test commands and helpers, accessibility test configuration, project references, lint rules, and dependencies.
Fixtures and editor coverage tests/a11y/documents.ts, packages/react/src/editor/a11y/*, packages/core/src/blocks/Heading/a11y/*
Adds accessibility fixtures and helpers. Tests cover editor keyboard navigation, read-only content, toggle headings, text spacing, resizing, and axe and screen-reader scenarios. Several tests are marked skipped.
Adds toolbar keyboard, formatting, color, nesting, axe, and screen-reader tests. Disables automatic focus return to the toolbar trigger after an action.
CI and testing guidance .github/workflows/a11y.yml, a11y-study/*
Adds a workflow to run browser accessibility tests and upload reports. Adds documents about accessibility concerns, test requirements, and tooling.
Theme palette and example
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Theme palette and editor styles packages/react/src/editor/styles.css, packages/core/src/editor/Block.css
Light and dark theme variables use OKLCH values. Editor styles use theme variables with fallback colors for controls, highlights, and marks.
Color-combinations example examples/04-theming/08-color-combinations/*, playground/src/examples.gen.tsx
Adds an example with separate block and inline color editors and a light/dark theme toggle. Adds its page, package configuration, documentation, and playground registry entry.
Versioning test cleanup
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Reset persisted toggle state tests/src/end-to-end/versioning/block-comparison.test.tsx
Clears persisted toggle-added and toggle-removed entries before the test body and before teardown cleanup.
TypeCellOS/BlockNote#2852: The PR updates editor palette values and describes a goal of improving contrast. It does not add custom-color warnings or restrict color choices.
TypeCellOS/BlockNote#2827: The palette changes include text and background colors used in the editor, but the supplied summaries do not report table-specific contrast validation.
TypeCellOS/BlockNote#3043: The PR changes green palette values, but the supplied summaries do not confirm the requested green’s contrast or appearance.
Possibly related PRs
TypeCellOS/BlockNote#3177: This PR has a strong code-level overlap with the accessibility workflow, test harness, fixtures, and accessibility tests added here.
TypeCellOS/BlockNote#3219: This PR maps editor and highlight theme variables to diagram variables, which this PR also updates.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 18d24
Editor body colors now meet contrast targets, but exported Typst/PDF documents still use the old low-contrast yellow palette, and the exporter baselines were not regenerated. Some smaller issues also remain: selection overlays are missing in browsers without color-mix(), the new example does not load live source aliases, and test-only helper files are packaged with @blocknote/react. Resolve the exporter divergence, or explicitly accept it, before merging.

Explanation
The description includes all required sections, explains the rationale and scope, lists the main changes, records testing results, provides screenshots, and includes the checklist status. Some checklist items remain unchecked, but the description is substantially complete.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The updated theme and highlight variables use OKLCH values. The color-combinations example exercises the default text and background palette in both themes, and the reported comparison shows 0 of 100 combinations below 4.5:1. These changes address the accessible palette requirement in [#2852] and the table color contrast requirement in [#2827] through the shared editor color variables. The updated green palette addresses [#3043]. No free-form color picker was added, so the conditional custom-color warning is not required.

Explanation
The whole PR includes changes unrelated to [#2852], [#2827], and [#3043]. Examples include the accessibility workflow and broad keyboard, focus, ARIA, and screen-reader tests; ToolbarSelect focus behavior; accessibility study documents; and versioning-test storage cleanup. Block.css also changes code-preview, file-block, column, thread, suggestion, and other UI colors beyond the stated editor body palette objective. These changes are not required to update the accessible color palette.
Resolution
Remove the unrelated accessibility infrastructure, keyboard/focus/screen-reader work, versioning-test cleanup, and unrelated UI color changes from this PR. Keep only the editor body palette changes and directly supporting color-combination or contrast tests. Move unrelated changes to separate pull requests.

I ended up changing all the color values we use in the editor body to OKLCH. Doesn't really make a difference outside of highlight colors but I would rather stick with using one color space for everything.

Add a doctype before <html>.
When the standalone example opens, the missing doctype puts the document in quirks mode. That makes the visual comparison use legacy rendering rules. Add <!doctype html> to the generating template and regenerate this file. (html.spec.whatwg.org)

Point the example's source guard and core/react aliases at the repository root.
From examples/04-theming/08-color-combinations/, ../../ resolves to examples/, not the repository root. The existence guard therefore fails inside the repository, and the config selects empty aliases. @blocknote/core and @blocknote/react then resolve through the installed packages, not packages/core/src and packages/react/src, so live source changes are not loaded. Use ../../../ for the guard and for those two aliases. The @shared alias already uses ../../../.
This file is marked as generated. Regenerating it from packages/dev-scripts/examples/template-react/vite.config.ts.template.tsx produces the same change, because the template already uses ../../../.

Update the generated Vite config’s source-existence guard and the
`@blocknote/core` and `@blocknote/react` aliases to resolve from the repository
root using the same `../../../` base as `@shared`. Keep the build-command
behavior unchanged, and make the corresponding change in the source template so
regeneration preserves it.

Add fallback declarations for the selection fill and outline.
Browsers without color-mix() treat each color-mix() declaration as invalid and drop it. Safari 15.4–16.1 supports oklch() but not color-mix(). In those versions, the selection fill and outline are not painted. Add a literal fallback before each color-mix() declaration. Apply the same change to the other selection rules that now use color-mix().

Add literal RGB fallback declarations before the color-mix() background-color
and box-shadow declarations in the selection rule, so browsers without
color-mix() still paint the selection fill and outline. Apply the same fallback
pattern to the other selection rules that use color-mix(), leaving the
color-mix() declarations in place for supported browsers.

Update the exporter palette to match the editor.
The Typst exporter defaults to COLORS_DEFAULT, so named yellow text and background styles still export as #dfab01 on #fbf3db at about 1.9:1 contrast. The editor now uses the updated OKLCH-based palette. Exported documents can therefore retain a low-contrast palette that differs from the editor.
Regenerate and review the Typst/PDF exporter and static visual baselines after the palette change.

Exclude the editor a11y test helpers from the published package.
packages/react/package.json publishes src, but its exclusions do not cover src/editor/a11y/. The pack output includes helpers.ts and axe-documents.ts. Both files exist only to support the a11y tests, and both import from @root/tests/.... Add an exclusion for that directory:

Summary
This PR updates editor body colors (UI elements like menus and toolbars are out of scope) to hit WCAG 2.0 AA contrast requirements and converts their CSS variables to use the OKLCH color space instead of RGB. OKLCH is a polar color space similar to HSL, but has 2 key advantages:
Verified that axe scans from out a11y tests no longer report contrast issues. An important thing to note is that placeholder contrast is currently untested and so placeholder colors have not been updated as part of this PR, only colors which have been caught to not pass WCAG contrast requirements when running an axe scan of the editor body. See #3205 for more info.
