Why

Source-aliased tests do not exercise published build output or plain Node's handling of CSS imports and deferred React work. This adds a small smoke layer for the failures behind #3228 and #3230, and enables the packed Next.js consumer checks for #942.

Changes

  • Check that published packages' declared entry points, types and asset exports exist in the build output.
  • Import executable ES entries in plain Node subprocesses, without Vitest's source aliases or CSS handling.
  • Export a mixed document containing React, inline/display math, diagram and column blocks to Markdown and both HTML formats, in development and production. Assert representative content, including both formulas, and let Node exit naturally so deferred React errors fail the test.
  • Run the existing Next.js fixture against packed core, react, server-util and mantine packages installed with standalone pnpm in a fresh directory outside the checkout. Verify workspace-only dependencies cannot resolve from the installed package.
  • Use the persistent getDocument() injection API from merged feat(server-util)!: allow swappable DOM environments #3237. Keep the fixture's required Yjs peers explicit.
  • Keep the Next.js harness small: no setup cache or separate process-management utility; kill and await the whole detached process group before removing the temporary consumer. Diagnostics include response bodies and server logs.

The existing CI steps already build the packages, run unit tests and invoke the production Next.js check. No additional matrix is needed. The prerequisites (#3237, #3238 and #3118) are now included from origin/main.

Coverage boundaries

  • Build-file/import checks use workspace dependencies, not isolated installs of every published package. Packed-consumer coverage currently covers four packages.
  • The Next editor-page check verifies the HTTP shell, not browser hydration. React context remains covered by the dedicated server-util tests, not by a pretend passing Next scenario.
  • Fixture direct dependencies are pinned, but transitive dependencies intentionally resolve fresh. No fixture lockfile is committed.
  • Process-group cleanup targets POSIX, matching CI.

Verification

  • Full workspace build: 43 tasks passed.
  • Full unit-test run: 17 tasks passed, with no cache hits (before the final harness simplification).
  • Full lint: zero errors; 10 existing warnings outside this changeset.
  • After the final simplification: 4 built-package tests, 3 Next.js production tests and 3 Next.js development tests passed; targeted lint and commit checks passed.
vp run -r build
# From tests/:

NEXTJS_TEST_MODE=dev vp test --run src/unit/nextjs/serverUtil.test.ts
NEXTJS_TEST_MODE=build vp test --run src/unit/nextjs/serverUtil.test.ts

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added checks that built packages expose valid entry points and load successfully in Node.js.
    • Expanded server-rendering checks for Markdown and HTML output across development and production modes.
    • Improved Next.js integration tests in isolated consumer environments, with clearer server startup and request failures.
    • Added checks that installed consumers cannot access workspace-only packages.

Walkthrough

The changes add checks for built package metadata, Node entry loading, and server exports. They also update the Next.js consumer fixture and test harness to install packed packages outside the checkout and run server-util checks in development or build mode.

Changes: Server Package Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Built-package entry and export checks
tests/src/unit/builtPackages/*, tests/vitestSetup.ts
New tests inspect package metadata, load exported entries in Node, and check server exports for math, diagram, React, and multi-column blocks in development and production. ClipboardEvent and DragEvent mocks now target globalThis.
Isolated Next.js consumer fixture
tests/nextjs-test-app/.gitignore, tests/nextjs-test-app/package.json, tests/nextjs-test-app/setup.sh
The fixture pins dependencies and installs packed BlockNote packages in a required empty directory outside the checkout.
Next.js server-util execution and assertions
tests/src/unit/nextjs/serverUtil.test.ts, tests/nextjs-test-app/app/api/server-util/route.tsx
The test suite supports explicit development or build mode and manages the server process and fixture. It checks package resolution and server responses. The API route uses a shared document for editor checks and removes the React-context scenario from its reported results.

A packed app waits beyond the tree,

In dev or build, the checks go on,

Assert representative content from each export.

serverExport.mjs discards all three export results. The test therefore passes when an exporter returns empty output or omits the representative optional blocks without throwing. Assert representative block content in each returned format before printing "exported".

Handle string root exports before iterating entries.

If a published package declares "exports": "./dist/index.js", Object.entries(pkg.exports) iterates the string's characters. The loader can then skip every character and report success without importing the entry. Normalize a string export to a "." entry before iterating.

82-83: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Assert both math sources in each HTML export.

The two includes checks at lines 82-83 run on the full HTML string. The math block alone can satisfy them, so removing the inline math output does not fail the test. Add a source check for each formula. The loop at line 81 already covers both HTML formats.

   assert.ok(html.includes("<math"), "MathML is missing");
   assert.ok(html.includes("application/x-tex"), "Math source is missing");
+  assert.ok(html.includes("x^2"), "Inline math source is missing");
+  assert.ok(html.includes("a^2 + b^2 = c^2"), "Math block source is missing");
   assert.ok(html.includes("A --> B"), "Diagram source is missing");
