fix(core): convert existing text via slash menu at block start - #3276
Convert the existing block when choosing Quote (or another inline-content block type) from the slash menu at the start of existing text, instead of inserting an empty block below it.
Preserve insertion below the current block when the caret is in the middle or at the end of text, when inserting non-inline blocks, or when the item supplies replacement content. Reset the caret after replacement only when the schema content type changes, so table and column replacements remain editable.
Open an editable BlockNote document and start with a paragraph.
Type Existing text.
Place the caret at the start (|Existing text) without selecting the text; | marks the caret.
Type /, find Quote in the slash menu, and select it.
Before:Existing text remains a normal paragraph, and a new empty quote block is inserted below it.
After: The existing paragraph becomes a quote containing Existing text; no extra quote block is inserted.
At the middle (Existing| text) or end (Existing text|), the original paragraph remains unchanged and a new empty quote is inserted below, with the caret inside it. Choosing a non-inline block, such as a divider, should continue to insert below rather than replace the text. Items supplying their own replacement content also continue to insert below.
Paste into an empty quote (regression coverage only)
Copy a paragraph of text from another editor (plain text or HTML containing a paragraph).
In an empty BlockNote paragraph, type / and choose Quote.
Paste the copied text into the empty quote.
Originally reported behavior: The quote disappears and the pasted content becomes a normal paragraph.
Before and after this PR: The quote remains and contains the pasted text. This behavior was already fixed by #2722; this PR adds explicit quote regression tests rather than another paste fix.
Tests
Node regression tests cover conversion at the start, insertion below at the middle/end, replacement-content and non-inline insertion, and caret placement inside table replacements. Middle/end insertion tests failed before restoring the start-only restriction and pass now.
Column replacement coverage verifies the caret enters the first column.
Original, unmodified slash-menu and drag-handle browser suites: all 78 tests passed across Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit in Docker, with existing snapshots unchanged.
Choosing an inline block at the start of a paragraph now converts that paragraph when no replacement content is provided. Other slash-menu selections continue to update empty or slash-only paragraphs or insert blocks below existing content.
Slash-menu conversions preserve the cursor position when the block’s content type remains unchanged.
Pasting plain text or HTML into an empty quote preserves the quote and its pasted content.

A slash item that supplies children and no content therefore converts the current inline block. updateBlock then replaces that block's existing children with the supplied children, so nested blocks that differ from the new children are removed. Before this change, the same item inserted below the current block and kept the subtree. Add a children check to the conversion condition so that items with children keep the insert-below behavior.
