Part of #8006 (milestone 3: tool-call IDs/results, streaming completion, token usage, and one failure event per failed logical call).

Summary

Adds lib/crewai/tests/llms/test_tool_stream_usage_contract.py: one shared set of behavioral tests run against both the native OpenAI (Chat Completions) and Anthropic providers through fake SDK responses. No API key, no network, no paid call. Tests only; no source change.

What each provider has to do identically:

Area Contract
Tool calls Without available_functions, every call comes back in order with its id, name and arguments, sync and async. With available_functions, the function runs once with the parsed arguments and its result is returned. The call completes once, as TOOL_CALL.
Tool results A tool message is sent back paired with the id of the call it answers.
Streaming A streamed answer is returned whole and each text delta is one LLMStreamChunkEvent, in order, sync and async. A streamed tool call is returned like a non-streamed one; its chunk events share one id while the arguments accumulate.
Token usage Each successful call (plain, tool-calling, streamed) adds its tokens to get_token_usage_summary() and reports them on LLMCallCompletedEvent.
Failures A failed call raises, emits exactly one LLMCallFailedEvent, no LLMCallCompletedEvent, and counts no usage; non-streaming, async and streaming.

Legitimate provider differences are recorded on the adapters instead of being hidden behind a shared assertion: the shape of a returned tool call (OpenAI SDK objects or dicts with JSON-string arguments, Anthropic tool-use blocks with dict arguments), and where a tool result lives in the request (a tool message for OpenAI, a tool_result block in a user turn for Anthropic).

Defects the tests exposed

Two of the 42 cases fail on current main. Both are marked xfail(strict=True) against the issue that reports the defect, so the mark has to be removed in the change that fixes it:

  • #7783 (already open, not mine): the non-streaming OpenAI handlers emit LLMCallFailedEvent and call() / acall() emit it again. Two cases, which assert only the failure-event count; the raise, no-completion and usage checks for a failed call run unmarked for both providers. I am not submitting a competing fix.

A third defect these tests exposed, #8060 (the Anthropic streaming handlers returned tool calls without emitting LLMCallCompletedEvent), was reported first and has since been fixed by #8061. This branch is merged up to main, the mark for that case is removed, and the case passes.

Verification

  • pytest tests/llms/test_tool_stream_usage_contract.py: 40 passed, 2 xfailed.
  • pytest tests/llms: 922 passed, 20 skipped, 2 xfailed, so the new module does not disturb the provider suites around it.
  • Before fix(anthropic): emit LLMCallCompletedEvent for streamed tool calls #8061 merged, the #8060 case failed on main and reported XPASS(strict) against the fix branch, which shows the test detects the fix.
  • The Anthropic cases are skipped when the Anthropic SDK is not installed, as tests/llms/test_multimodal.py does.

Additional context

Kept standalone so it does not conflict with the milestone 1 and 2 PRs (#8037, #8039). It uses the same adapter-per-provider pattern as #8037, and I will fold the duplicated helpers (_Recorder, the fake raw response) into the shared fixtures once that lands. Gemini and Bedrock are the next milestone and are not touched here.

Prepared with AI assistance (Claude Code), per CONTRIBUTING. I don't have permission to apply the llm-generated label, so could a maintainer add it?

Note

Low Risk
Adds test-only coverage with mocked providers; no runtime or API behavior changes.

Overview
Adds test_tool_stream_usage_contract.py, a new shared pytest suite (issue #8006, milestone 3) that exercises native OpenAI and Anthropic LLM providers through mocked SDK responses—no API keys or network.

The same scenarios run for both providers via _OpenAIContract / _AnthropicContract adapters: tool calls (return shape, available_functions, tool-result pairing), streaming (text chunks, streamed tool args, LLMStreamChunkEvent), token usage on get_token_usage_summary() and LLMCallCompletedEvent, and failures (raise, single LLMCallFailedEvent, no completion/usage). Provider-specific request/response shapes are asserted on the adapters, not hidden behind one generic check.

Two OpenAI cases are xfail(strict=True) for #7783 (duplicate failure events on non-streaming call/acall). Anthropic cases skip when the Anthropic SDK is missing. Production code is unchanged—tests only.

Review summary

Reviewed the single added file lib/crewai/tests/llms/test_tool_stream_usage_contract.py, a shared behavioral contract test suite for the native OpenAI and Anthropic providers. The module operates entirely on locally constructed fake SDK responses and monkeypatched client calls, with placeholder API keys injected via os.environ for test setup only. It introduces no runtime code paths, performs no real network calls, and contains no hardcoded secrets, injection sinks, or authorization logic. No security issues were identified in the changed code.

Walkthrough

Adds shared behavioral contract tests for OpenAI and Anthropic native providers. Fake SDK responses and recorded requests support tests for tool calls, streaming, token usage, events, and failures. Anthropic tests skip when its SDK is unavailable. OpenAI sync and async duplicate-failure-event tests use strict expected-failure marks.

1053-1085: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Split the failure contract from the duplicate-event xfail.

The strict xfail covers the entire sync and async failure tests. If _assert_one_failure fails on a duplicate event, it exits before checking completion and usage. The xfail also masks a failure in the exception assertion. These tests therefore do not independently protect the exception, no-completion, and usage contracts.

This is a test-coverage gap, not a current production failure. Keep separate strict-xfail tests for the failure-event count so XPASS(strict) still detects the #7783 fix.

The strict xfail for crewAIInc#7783 covered the whole sync and async failure tests, so
the raise, no-completion and usage assertions never ran for OpenAI. Those now
run for both providers, and the failure-event count has its own strict-xfail
tests.

Applied the CodeRabbit nitpick in aded568: the strict xfail for #7783 no longer covers the whole sync and async failure tests. The raise, no-completion and usage checks now run unmarked for both providers, and the failure-event count has its own strict-xfail tests, so XPASS(strict) still flags the #7783 fix. Module: 40 passed, 2 xfailed; tests/llms: 922 passed, 20 skipped, 2 xfailed.
