Owner

Breaking - generated bytes change, by the owner's decision of 2026-10-15. The version is the owner's call at release.

What changes in the files

  • A page with no label has a title that says Page. The smallest page and every page under --clean carried

, which the Nu HTML Checker reports as an error. The smallest HTML page goes from 118 B to 122 B, and the empty-and-minimal recipe prints 122 where it printed 118, so its recipe_hash changes. Pages with a label are unchanged.
  • elements=every: id="tfg-forms" and name="tfg-hidden". DOMPurify 3.4.17 took out id="forms" and name="hidden", both shadowing a property of the document, so the two links to the forms section led nowhere and the hidden field left a submitted form without its name. The smallest catalogue goes from 6924 B to 6944 B.
  • layout=newsletter opens its page with
, written in the frame so quoted-printable writes =3D. The smallest newsletter grows by 10 B (12 B in quoted-printable and base64). simple keeps its bytes.

Also

  • The structural checker refuses a document whose title has no text and a newsletter page without its language, each with a canary that breaks a page the program wrote.
  • Two golden cases pin the placeholder pages, which nothing held before. Four golden values move, with a remeasured entry saying why.
  • The descriptions of charset, message_depth and filename_style say what Thunderbird 157 and MimeKit with a code page provider do (measured), in English and Polish.
  • The site's minimum column and the empty-and-minimal total follow from the tool.

Measured

  • Nu HTML Checker, before and after: Element "title" must not be empty on the smallest and the --clean page, and the lang notice on the newsletter, are gone. Nothing new appears.
  • DOMPurify 3.4.17 on the catalogue: before, id=forms and name=hidden removed and two dangling links. After, nothing removed and no dangling link.
  • Six mutation entries, all caught.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Unlabeled HTML pages now display “Page” as their title.
    • Newsletter EML output now declares English as its page language.
  • Changes
    • Forms links and hidden-field identifiers have been updated. If you use elements=every, update any references to the previous identifiers.
    • EML format guidance now includes updated notes on charset handling, attachment filenames, and deeply nested messages.

…tter that says its language

A breaking change by the owner's decision of 2026-10-15
(docs/HTML-6-2026-10-15.md, O277, O282).

A page no label fills - the smallest, and every one under --clean -
carried

, which the Nu HTML Checker reports as an error.
It carries
Page
now, a word that says nothing about this
tool. The smallest HTML page goes from 118 B to 122 B.

The catalogue of every element names its forms section tfg-forms and its
hidden field tfg-hidden, the way the links list is tfg-links. DOMPurify
3.4.17 took out id="forms" and name="hidden", both of which shadow a
property of the document, so two links led nowhere and the field left a
submitted form without its name. Measured after: it takes out nothing.

A newsletter's page opens with
, written in the frame so
quoted-printable gives its = as =3D. A message laid out simple keeps its
bytes.

The structural checker now refuses a document whose title has no text and
a newsletter page without its language, each with a canary. Two golden
cases pin the placeholder pages, which nothing held. Measured with Nu
before and after: the title errors and the language notice go, nothing is
added.

The eml settings charset, message_depth and filename_style say what
Thunderbird 157 and MimeKit with a code page provider do with them
(docs/EML-4-2026-10-15.md), in English and Polish.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

The PR adds an unsafe parser path in internal/oracle/strict.py:1099. re.search(r"<title>(.*?)</title>", text, re.S | re.I) can take quadratic time on malformed HTML with repeated <title> tags and no closing </title>. An inline benchmark took 0.094 s for 1,000 repetitions and 15.98 s for 12,000 repetitions. This can hang the structural check on a large malformed file.

Resolution

Replace the lazy re.search with a single-pass HTMLParser implementation. Use handle_starttag, handle_data, and handle_endtag to track one closed title element and a non-whitespace text flag, without accumulating title content. Require a closed title with text. Keep the existing 60-second subprocess timeout and add a documented maximum input size before handle.read() if the checker must reject huge files safely.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

The PR adds two user-visible structural-check errors without remediation. internal/oracle/strict.py:1101 says the document has no title with text, but does not tell the user to add title text. The newsletter error at internal/oracle/strict.py:3217 reports only “language of the page”; internal/oracle/oracle.go:532-533 exposes this text as the returned error.

Resolution

Make each error state the fix. Replace the title message with: the document has no title with text in it; add non-whitespace text inside <title>...</title>. Replace the newsletter detail with: HTML lacks lang="en"; add lang="en" to the <html> start tag (or equivalent wording in the existing layout=newsletter ... format).

…ens show 4 B more

The first run of #190 found two guards the local run left out.

TestAnHTMLDocumentIsBalancedAndCarriesBlocks asked for 118 B and 119 B,
which are below the smallest page now. It asks the registry for the
minimum, as the two other tests holding the default bytes do since this
pull request.

Three screens show the size of a run of empty-and-minimal, which is 4 B
more: 40 427 B to 40 431 B on preset and preset-menu, 10 526 187 B to
10 526 191 B on recipe-on-a-preset. One line of each stored tree moves,
and the pictures were drawn again with TFG_WRITE_SCREEN_REFERENCE.

- Line 75: Update the newsletter HTML paragraph generation to set its language
independently of the English document language: use Polish for ISO-8859-2 and
Windows-1250 content, and `mul` for mixed Polish and Japanese UTF-8 content.
Apply this only to localized newsletter paragraphs, preserving existing
paragraph generation for other layouts and non-international content; locate the
generation through `htmlLine` and `internationalLine`.

Review comments at @internal/format/eml/settings.go:
- Line 285: Update the charset descriptions to state that MimeKit tries UTF-8
first for unavailable declared charsets and falls back to Latin-1 only if UTF-8
decoding fails. Apply the matching source description change in
internal/format/eml/settings.go (line 285), the English description change in
internal/gui/text/locale/registry/en.json (line 1210), and the Polish
description change in internal/gui/text/locale/registry/pl.json (line 243).

19-27: Changelog prose includes the internal identifier style and a semicolon-free check passes, but entries contain internal terms.

CONTRIBUTING requires user-facing entries in plain language without internal file or function names. The entry mentions recipe_hash and tfg preset eject empty-and-minimal. These are user-visible CLI and manifest fields, so they are acceptable. No change needed. The 118 B to 121 B refusal claim matches the new 122 B floor.

57-57: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 💤 Low value

Temp file names can collide across the which keys.

The name uses strconv.Itoa(len(which)). The keys "the smallest page" (17 chars) and "a page under --clean" (20 chars) differ in length today. A future key with an equal length would silently overwrite files. The loop does not fail, but the collision hides cases. Use a loop index or a sanitized key instead.

Proposed fix
-				path := filepath.Join(dir, layout+strconv.Itoa(len(which))+strconv.Itoa(i)+".html")
+				path := filepath.Join(dir, layout+"-"+strings.ReplaceAll(which, " ", "_")+"-"+strconv.Itoa(i)+".html")

461-467: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 💤 Low value

The golden case html_smallest_page hardcodes 122 B.

The sibling tests read the floor from the registry because a hardcoded 118 B broke on this change. A future minimum change breaks this case the same way. Compare Sizes with the registry minimum, or accept the failure as a deliberate golden pin. If it is deliberate, the comment should say so.

75-75: 🎯 Functional Correctness

Match the document language to the generated text.

newsletterFrame always emits
, while message.htmlLine contains the language selected by settings.internationalLine. If newsletter messages can select Polish or Japanese text, derive the document language from that selection or add a matching lang attribute to the localized content.

internal/format/eml/settings.go: 1

361-361: 🎯 Functional Correctness

Resolve the Thunderbird nesting boundary before updating these descriptions.

The descriptions state that 32 levels display in full, then state that the 32nd nested message shows only headers. Test message_depth values 31, 32, and 33 in Thunderbird 157.0.1, then apply the exact cutoff consistently to the Go, English, and Polish descriptions.

…, and two smaller fixes

From the CodeRabbit review of #190, each remark checked first.

The newsletter's page says it is English since this pull request, so its
line in Polish and Japanese read as English to a screen reader. Each half
now says its language in a span of its own, the Polish one alone where the
character set holds no Japanese. On two lines where the Japanese half
comes: the spans made the line 83 characters, past the 78 RFC 5322 asks
for, and 8bit has no soft line break - the structural checker caught it. A
message laid out simple is unchanged. The checker asks for both marks, and
the newsletter canary breaks each.

MimeKit with no code page provider tries UTF-8 and then Latin-1, read from
TextPart.cs at 4.18.1, rather than reading the text as Latin-1 outright.
The charset description says so, in English and Polish.

The checker finds the title rather than matching a lazy pattern, which over
many unclosed title tags took 19.6 s for 20 000 of them and 0.8 s for 5000.
