VS Code shows its views in a vertical activity bar on the left. The theme now sets perspectiveSwitcherSide=left, which Eclipse releases with eclipse-platform/eclipse.platform.ui#4475 apply and older ones ignore. Assisted-by: multiple AI agents and layers of automated tooling 🤖

The new workbench preference perspectiveSwitcherSide moves the
perspective switcher to the top, bottom, left or right trim. A theme
sets it like any other preference, for example
IEclipsePreferences#org-eclipse-ui-workbench {
preferences: 'perspectiveSwitcherSide=left'; }, which gives an
activity-bar style vertical switcher. The side last applied is kept in
the switcher's persisted state, so a position the user picks by
dragging stays until the preference changes again.

A new workbench preference, perspectiveSwitcherSide, moves the perspective switcher to the top, bottom, left or right trim, where it re-renders with the matching orientation. Themes set it through the existing CSS preferences mechanism, for example
IEclipsePreferences#org-eclipse-ui-workbench { preferences: 'perspectiveSwitcherSide=left'; }, which gives a vertical, activity-bar style switcher as in VS Code, without any change to the CSS engine. The side last applied is remembered on the switcher, so a position the user drags it to survives restarts until the preference changes, and switching to a theme without the rule moves it back to the top. docs/CSS.md describes the preferences rule and the new key.
