Mockito 5.x raises the minimum supported Java version to 11 (class file version 55), which breaks compileTestJava on this project's Java 8 CI leg and toolchain (sourceCompatibility/targetCompatibility = 1.8). Since mockito-core is a testImplementation-only dependency, pinning to the latest 4.x release (4.11.0) still brings ~2 years of fixes over 3.12.4 while keeping the test suite buildable on Java 8.
