MARKDOWN_EXTENSIONS selects extensions from a fixed allowlist for local posts. All are off by default and apply only on creation or explicit edits, so configuration changes do not rewrite stored content.

Draft and final rendering share parser configuration and collect metadata after unused definitions are removed. This keeps hidden content and math out of mention, preview, and quote lookups. Footnotes link to the canonical post; repeated server-rendered copies omit footnote IDs to avoid collisions.

HTML carries visible fallbacks because receivers may strip semantic tags. Math uses bounded KaTeX MathML with TeX annotations; invalid or blocked commands retain their escaped source. Gukhanmun preserves authored ruby and math, and emoji replacement skips math. Five localized guides explain syntax and receiver limits.

Closes #679.

Add ten opt-in extensions for local posts while preserving the existing
profile syntax. Use bounded MathML rendering, readable HTML fallbacks,
and stable footnote links without duplicate IDs in repeated post views.

Preserve authored annotations through Gukhanmun and emoji processing.
Document syntax, limits, and federation caveats in all five locales, with
parser, API, ActivityPub, and rendering regression coverage.

Codex implemented the change; Codex and Claude reviewed the design and
code. OpenCode's initial review was blocked and prompted no changes.

Closes fedify-dev#679

📝 Walkthrough

Adds configurable, opt-in Markdown extensions for locally authored posts. The change adds parser and output handling, validates settings at startup, and documents extension syntax, configuration, and rendering limitations.

Changes: Markdown extensions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Extension configuration and validation
src/markdown-settings.ts, src/markdown-settings.test.ts, bin/server.ts, package.json, pnpm-workspace.yaml, .env.sample, compose.yaml, compose-fs.yaml
Adds a supported extension list and environment parser. Unknown names cause startup validation to fail. Unset or empty settings disable optional extensions. Adds Markdown packages and configuration examples.
Markdown parsing and extension rendering
src/markdown.ts, src/markdown-math.ts, src/markdown-linkify.ts, src/markdown-plugins.d.ts, src/markdown.test.ts
Adds post-specific parsing and rendering for configured extensions. Math output uses bounded KaTeX rendering with literal fallbacks. Tests cover extension combinations, parsing boundaries, and rendering limits.
Post rendering and generated markup
src/text.ts, src/api/v1/statuses.ts, src/api/v1/statuses.test.ts, src/components/Post.tsx, src/pages/profile/profilePost.tsx, src/html.ts, src/federation/post.ts, src/custom-emoji.ts, src/gukhanmun.ts, src/xss.ts, uno.config.ts, src/*test.ts
Passes document IDs and permalinks into post rendering. Handles generated footnote IDs, math and ruby markup, preview-link extraction, custom emoji, sanitization, and display styles. Tests cover API, federation, and rendering paths.
Federation acceptance checks
scripts/test-markdown-federation.ts, tests/markdown-federation/*
Adds an acceptance-test runner and records receiver output and update behavior for the tested extensions.
Markdown guidance and release notes
docs/astro.config.mjs, docs/src/content/docs/*, CHANGES.md, changes.d/markdown-extensions.md, DESIGN.md
Adds translated Markdown guides and navigation. The guides describe configuration, syntax, rendering limits, and receiver behavior. Adds release notes and design guidance.

Explanation

The configuration, Markdown parser, rendering, metadata handling, sanitization, federation test tooling, tests, styles, changelog, and localized guides directly support the implementation and documentation requirements in issue #679. No unrelated product change is established by the reviewed changes.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #679 remains active and includes coding and automated-test requirements. The PR implements the ten opt-in extensions, parser and renderer integration, source and edit policy, sanitization, metadata filtering, fallbacks, documentation, and recorded Mastodon 4.7.3 and Misskey 2026.10.0 federation tests. The Markdown guide still states that browser, client, and accessibility checks remain pending. Therefore, the acceptance requirement for representative API clients and keyboard, touch, and screen-reader verification is not met.

Resolution

Add reviewable automated tests or implementation evidence for representative API clients and keyboard, touch, and screen-reader behavior. Record the results and any remaining limitations in the documentation or federation test evidence.

markdown-it's escapeRE() escapes hyphens as \-, which is invalid in a
Unicode regular expression. Labels such as Wi-Fi therefore made draft
and final rendering throw. Use RegExp.escape() for literal labels.

Test hyphenated labels and regex metacharacters in both passes, including
one visible expansion for repeated labels.

Escape regex syntax characters directly so abbreviation rendering works

Add the required cross-server acceptance tests before shipping these receiver claims.

The linked acceptance contract requires executable Mastodon and Misskey server-to-server tests, receiver-version records, and remaining-loss records. The current local and mocked tests do not provide that evidence, so interoperability remains unverified. Add and exercise this cross-server coverage, then keep the documentation aligned with the recorded results.

Addressed this finding in e62b11e. The acceptance runner exercises all ten extensions against Mastodon 4.7.3 and Misskey 2026.10.0. Both store all ten posts; Mastodon applies edits, while Misskey ignores Note updates. Recorded API output and matching inbox logs are in tests/markdown-federation/, and all five guides now state the Misskey limitation. Browser, client, and accessibility checks remain pending.

Reject raw Markdown in receiver assertions.

The receiver checks in scripts/test-markdown-federation.ts:305-311 require only visible substrings. Raw Markdown can satisfy those checks for mark, ins, ruby, and math, so an untransformed receiver response can pass. This does not validate the transformations documented in tests/markdown-federation/README.md.

Add a fixture-level assertion that rejects the raw source for transformations that must not preserve it.
