fix: ship app-update.yml in the macOS app so it can update itself - #1432
The macOS .app ships without Contents/Resources/app-update.yml, so every in-place update fails (ENOENT … app-update.yml) and falls back to the release page.
Cause: electron-builder only writes that file on macOS when the targets include dmg or zip. The release job packs with --mac --dir, so the target list is just dir.
Fix:
scripts/after-pack.cjs (new afterPack hook) writes it on macOS from the publish config, before signing. No-op on Windows/Linux and when electron-builder already wrote it.
build.yml now fails the mac job if the bundle lacks the file.
Cherry-pick candidate for release/v2.2.0 (same code there).
macOS app packages now include the update configuration when it is missing. Build checks confirm the configuration is present and report an error if it is not.
Existing update configuration is preserved, and Windows and Linux packaging behavior remains unchanged.

Walkthrough
The packaging hook creates app-update.yml in macOS app bundles when the file is absent. Tests cover platform behavior and preservation of an existing file. The macOS build workflow checks for the file in the packaged app.
Changes: macOS updater metadata
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Generate and verify updater metadata scripts/after-pack.cjs, electron-builder.json5, scripts/after-pack.test.mjs, .github/workflows/build.yml
The afterPack hook writes app-update.yml for macOS using the first publish configuration and updaterCacheDirName. It leaves an existing file unchanged and does not create the file on Windows or Linux. Tests cover these behaviors. The macOS build checks for the file in the packaged app.

The updater metadata hook handles the configured publisher correctly, and the macOS build checks that the packaged file exists. Both previous publisher concerns are resolved; the change is mergeable subject to normal checks.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template's core sections. It has a Summary-style explanation of the bug, cause, and fix, and it references an issue (Refs #1431). It also notes the cherry-pick target. Several template sections are missing: the Type of change, Release impact, and Desktop impact checkboxes are not marked, Screenshots is not needed but is not addressed, and the Testing section has no content. The Related issue section uses Refs instead of the template's Fixes line, which is acceptable for a partial fix. The description also references issue #1431 while the objectives cite PR #1432, which is a different number and should be reconciled.
Resolution
Mark the Type of change (Bug fix), Release impact (Patch), and Desktop impact (macOS and Installer / packaging) checkboxes. Add a Testing section that describes how the fix was verified, such as building the mac --dir bundle and confirming app-update.yml exists or running the Vitest suite for after-pack.cjs. Confirm the issue number, since the description cites #1431 and the objectives reference PR #1432.

Make the afterPack hook accept an object-form publish value.
scripts/after-pack.cjs:30 destructures packager.config.publish as an array. An object-form value throws a TypeError and fails the macOS pack. The project declares array form, so this path is not reached today. The test file also supplies only array form, so it cannot catch the failure. Normalize the value in the hook, then add an object-form case to scripts/after-pack.test.mjs.

Update the afterPack hook to normalize packager.config.publish so both
object-form and array-form values are accepted without throwing, and add an
object-form case to the existing afterPack tests to cover this behavior.

electron-builder writes app-update.yml on macOS only for dmg/zip targets, and
the release job packs with --mac --dir, so no shipped .app ever had it. An
afterPack hook writes it before signing; build.yml now fails without it.

Resolve the macOS publisher before writing app-update.yml.

Resolve the macOS publisher before writing app-update.yml.
The hook reads only the global publish list. electron-builder resolves mac.publish first for update metadata. If mac.publish is set, the bundled app-update.yml can name the global feed, or the hook fails when only mac.publish is configured. Read the platform-specific publisher first, then fall back to the global list.

Review comment at @scripts/after-pack.cjs at line 30:
Update the publisher selection in the after-pack hook to prefer
packager.platformSpecificBuildOptions.publish and fall back to
packager.config.publish when absent, so app-update.yml uses the macOS publisher
when configured.

Add a test that pins the first entry of a macOS publish array.
The precedence test sets mac.publish only as a single object. The suite never uses an array with more than one entry. A change that selects a different entry, such as the last one, would still pass the suite. electron-builder documents publish as an array and allows it in platform-specific configuration, and after-pack.cjs selects the first entry. Add a test that checks the first entry is written.

Review comment at @scripts/after-pack.test.mjs around lines 63 - 65:
Add a test alongside the macOS publish precedence test that configures multiple
entries in `ctx.packager.platformSpecificBuildOptions.publish`, calls
`afterPack`, and verifies the generated file contains the first entry rather
than a later one.
