Clicking the update button on Windows now shows only UAC instead of the full NSIS wizard. Fixes #1437.

Change

  • installSelfUpdate calls quitAndInstall(true, true) instead of (false, true).
  • Without /S, the assisted installer (oneClick: false) opened on the install-mode page. On a machine with both a per-user and a per-machine install, that page preselected the wrong copy.

Why it still elevates

  • electron-builder's installer.nsi handles a silent upgrade of a per-machine install itself: it calls UAC_RunElevated when $hasPerMachineInstallation is set and the run is ${Silent}.
  • So the user sees only UAC. If they dismiss it, the installer quits having installed nothing, which is the same outcome as cancelling the wizard.

Testing

  • electron/auto-updater.test.ts updated.
  • E2E on a real Windows per-machine install (sarae) with a local update feed, before merge.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Windows updates now use silent installation when only a per-user or per-machine install is detected, or when neither is detected.
    • If both per-user and per-machine installs are present, Windows uses the installation wizard instead of installing silently.
    • Updates on non-Windows platforms continue to use silent installation.
    • The app continues to relaunch after installation.

Without /S the assisted NSIS installer opened its whole wizard on the
install-mode page, which could update the wrong copy when a per-user and a
per-machine install coexist. A silent per-machine upgrade still elevates
itself through UAC_RunElevated.

Walkthrough

The updater detects whether NSIS installs exist in the Windows per-machine and per-user registry hives. It uses that result to select silent installation for self-updates and continues to force the app to restart.

Changes: Windows self-update

Layer / File(s) Summary
NSIS install detection
electron/auto-updater.ts, electron/auto-updater.test.ts
The updater checks for NSIS installs in HKLM and HKCU. It selects silent installation on Windows unless both installs are present, and tests cover the detection cases and registry key.
Silent installer handoff
electron/auto-updater.ts, electron/auto-updater.test.ts
installSelfUpdate passes the detection result to quitAndInstall and retains forced restart. The handoff tests cover silent installation and the Windows wizard path.

Normal single-install updates run silently, while detected dual installs retain the wizard. A registry query failure can still cause the wrong copy to be updated; this narrow fallback issue warrants owner awareness or correction. The registry-view concern does not affect supported installers.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: Windows updates now install silently so only the UAC prompt appears. This matches the raw summary (installSelfUpdate passes silent mode to quitAndInstall) and the PR objectives (change from quitAndInstall(false, true) to (true, true)). The title uses the conventional fix(updater) prefix and is 64 characters long, within a normal length.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template in its main content. It has a Summary-like opening that states the change, a Related issue line that uses Fixes #1437, a Change section, a Why it still elevates section, and a Testing section that lists the updated test file and an E2E run on a Windows per-machine install. The template sections Type of change, Release impact, Desktop impact, and Screenshots / video are absent. The Fixes line has the issue number filled in, so the reference is complete. The description is mostly complete, and the missing checkboxes are non-critical for a pass, but the author should add the Type of change, Release impact, and Desktop impact selections to match the template.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#1437] requires the Windows self-update path to avoid the NSIS wizard, elevate through UAC, install the update, and relaunch the app. installSelfUpdate now passes installsSilently() and true to quitAndInstall. A single detected Windows install uses silent mode. The installer can then perform its UAC elevation. When both HKLM and HKCU installs exist, the code retains the wizard to avoid selecting the wrong copy. Tests cover the handoff and the single-install, dual-install, and non-Windows cases.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to the self-update handoff, NSIS install detection, and focused automated tests. Dual-install detection directly addresses the wrong-copy risk in [#1437]. No unrelated product or platform changes appear in the reviewed diff.

…ll coexist

/S always upgrades the per-machine copy when one exists, so with both
installed it could update the copy that is not running.

Do not treat registry-query failure as “not installed”.

reg query returns exit code 1 for any failure, not only for a missing key. A failed query can therefore make installsSilently() select quitAndInstall(true, true) for dual installs. The silent NSIS path can update the per-machine copy instead of the running per-user copy. Distinguish a confirmed missing key from other failures, and use the assisted installer for unknown results.

Update the registry-query logic used by installsSilently() to distinguish a
confirmed missing key from other query failures. Treat only confirmed absence as
“not installed”; treat other failures as unknown and select the assisted
installer rather than quitAndInstall(true, true).
Nitpick Cover the dual-install handoff.

112-112: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Cover the dual-install handoff.

The handoff test only exercises the no-install path, where installsSilently() returns true. Add an integration-level test that forces the Windows dual-install path and asserts quitAndInstall(false, true). Control the platform-dependent branch explicitly; mocking registry results alone does not exercise it on non-Windows hosts.

Minor follow-up Treat a failed reg query as an unknown install, not an absent one.

93-95: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Treat a failed reg query as an unknown install, not an absent one.

Microsoft documents status 1 as a generic reg query failure. It does not mean only “key not found.” If one hive returns status 1 and the other hive contains an install, installsSilently() can pass true to quitAndInstall(). The silent NSIS installer can then select a different installation scope from the running copy.

Keep the wizard when registry detection fails. This path is introduced by this PR. The merge base always called quitAndInstall(false, true).

Update the registry-query handling in installsSilently() so status 1 is treated
as an unknown result, not proof that the key is absent; keep the wizard rather
than allowing quitAndInstall() to proceed silently when either query fails.
Nitpick Assert the reg queries in the dual-install handover test.

168-168: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Assert the reg queries in the dual-install handover test.

The mock returns status 0 for every spawnSync call and ignores its arguments. A wrong key or hive in hasNsisInstall would still pass this test. Assert both reg query calls with NSIS_INSTALL_KEY.

In the dual-install handover test, assert that both `spawnSync` calls query
`NSIS_INSTALL_KEY` under the HKLM and HKCU hives for `InstallLocation`, using
`/reg:64` and `windowsHide: true`; keep the existing mock behavior.

Windows e2e: pass. Tested on the CI artifact (run 41134713526, 408a901a3), real input via computer-use, local feed serving 9.9.9.

  • Single per-machine install: installer runs with --updated /S --force-run. Only the UAC prompt appears, no wizard. The app relaunches by itself, and app-update.yml is back to provider: github.
  • Per-machine + per-user installs side by side: no /S (--updated --force-run). The wizard reappears with "Just for me" preselected, as intended.

Not covered: macOS and Linux updates.
