What

Adds the chats API routes not yet covered by the SDK, in a single PR as requested, following the JS SDK (meilisearch-js#1988).

Chat workspace methods on Client:

  • get_chat_workspace(uid): GET /chats/{uid}
  • delete_chat_workspace(uid): DELETE /chats/{uid}
  • reset_chat_workspace_settings(uid): DELETE /chats/{uid}/settings

Index chat settings on Index:

  • get_chat_settings(): GET /indexes/{uid}/settings/chat
  • update_chat_settings(body): PATCH /indexes/{uid}/settings/chat
  • reset_chat_settings(): DELETE /indexes/{uid}/settings/chat

Already available: create_chat_completion, get_chat_workspaces, get_chat_workspace_settings, update_chat_workspace_settings.

Workspace uids are validated client-side (empty values, path separators and ?/# are rejected) so a malformed uid cannot reach an unintended route.

Also adds the index chat settings code samples.

Closes #1288
Closes #1290

Tests

23 new tests against a local Meilisearch 1.55.0 server, all passing. Ruff lint and format pass.

📝 Walkthrough

The SDK adds methods to retrieve, update, and reset index chat settings. It also adds methods to retrieve and delete chat workspaces and reset workspace settings, with tests and examples.

Changes: Chat API methods

Layer / File(s) Summary
Index chat settings
meilisearch/config.py, meilisearch/index.py, tests/settings/test_settings_chat_meilisearch.py, .code-samples.meilisearch.yaml
Adds index chat settings retrieval, update, and reset methods. Tests cover defaults, full and partial updates, and reset behavior. Examples demonstrate retrieval, configuration, and reset.
Chat workspace methods
meilisearch/client.py, tests/client/test_chat_workspaces.py
Adds workspace retrieval, deletion, and settings reset methods. UID validation rejects empty values, path separators, and URL delimiters. Tests cover these operations and validation.

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a50b2

The SDK change is mergeable with a bounded test-isolation fix: restore the prior chat feature setting so later tests are not affected.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to a50b2

A dot-only workspace identifier can cause the new settings-reset method to target workspace deletion instead. Exploitation requires an application to pass attacker-controlled identifiers through credentials authorized for the resulting operation; no server authorization bypass was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new workspace reset method accepts "." and interpolates it into chats/./settings. HTTP URL normalization removes that segment, turning the request into DELETE /chats/settings: the deletion route for workspace UID "settings", rather than a workspace-settings reset. If that workspace exists and the configured credentials permit deletion, an application accepting untrusted UIDs can perform a different destructive operation. This consequence is newly reachable through the added DELETE method, although raw interpolation predates the PR.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The concrete route-confusion case affects the configured Meilisearch service and potentially a workspace named "settings". It requires attacker control of a UID passed to the reset method and credentials permitting the resulting deletion. The evidence does not establish arbitrary workspace targeting, cross-service access, credential disclosure, or bypass of server permissions.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An application forwarding an untrusted "." UID to reset_chat_workspace_settings sends chats/./settings through the authenticated transport. Inspected URL preparation normalizes this to chats/settings, changing the intended operation from settings reset to workspace deletion. Server acceptance and authorization remain prerequisites for destructive impact.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Workspace identifier validation is the local control between caller input and authenticated route construction. The transport concatenates the relative route with the configured URL, preserves configured authorization, and converts unsuccessful HTTP responses into MeilisearchApiError.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Task identity and terminal status remain available for recovery decisions after settings mutations. Timeout is not evidence that a mutation was rolled back, and task completion does not itself establish ordering against overlapping mutations. Server-side atomicity, repetition, cancellation, and recovery semantics remain outside the verified source scope.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Enforce the documented workspace-identifier grammar before interpolation, explicitly excluding dot-only segments, and verify that prepared URLs preserve the intended workspace and operation.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR implements all coding objectives from #1288 and #1290. Index adds get_chat_settings, update_chat_settings with PATCH, and reset_chat_settings for /indexes/{uid}/settings/chat. Client adds workspace get, delete, and settings-reset methods for the three /chats/{workspace_uid} routes. The added tests cover retrieval, full and partial updates, reset behavior, deletion, missing workspaces, and the chatCompletions feature setup. Workspace UID validation also prevents malformed route paths.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within the linked issue scope. The new Config.Paths.chat constant supports the chat routes. The UID validation, code samples, and automated tests directly support the new chat workspace and index chat settings methods. No unrelated product behavior is identified.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 72.73% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 22 functions across 5 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Restore the previous chatCompletions value.

If chatCompletions was enabled before this fixture ran, Line 18 disables it after the test. Later tests can then fail because this fixture changed shared server state. Save the previous value before enabling the feature, and restore that value during teardown.
