Uart: don't use the TX semaphore when the port isn't open - #15
Uart::end() deletes _end_tx_sem and leaves it NULL, and Uart::write() takes it without checking, so anything printed after end() hard-faults inside xQueueSemaphoreTake() on address 0x38. Uart::flush() already checks _begun.
write() now returns 0 when the port isn't open, which also covers a write before begin(). availableForWrite() reads the same semaphore, so it does the same.
Meshtastic gets there on an nRF54L15: cpuDeepSleep() calls Serial.end() and then setBluetoothEnable(false), which logs. The node faults and resets instead of going to sleep.
Testing
nRF54L15-DK, Meshtastic 2.8.3 on platform v0.5.0, with a temporary change that forces that sleep path for 200 s, 100 s after boot:
Result
Without this change
HardFault with CFSR 0x8200 and BFAR 0x38, in xQueueSemaphoreTake() called from Uart::write(), then a reset (SREQ)
With it
Sleeps for 200.1 s, then the reset cpuDeepSleep() intends (SREQ)
The second build also has the watchdog fix from meshtastic/firmware#12049, because otherwise the watchdog ends the sleep at 90 s.
With the port open, _begun is 1 and DWT comparators show write() still getting past the check to its memcpy. This board's console over VCOM was already silent before this change, so I could not read the output itself.
Not tested: availableForWrite() and a write before begin(), which I have only read, and other boards. Meshtastic's shutdown goes through the same calls before SYSTEMOFF, but I have only read that path too.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
UART write and buffer-availability checks now safely return zero before the UART is started.
end() deletes _end_tx_sem and leaves it NULL, and write() takes it without
checking, so anything printed after end() hard-faults inside
xQueueSemaphoreTake(). flush() already checks _begun.
write() now returns 0 when the port isn't open. So does availableForWrite(),
which reads the same semaphore.
This change stops UART writes from hard-faulting when the port is not open, which was the crash seen before sleep. A narrower race remains if a caller closes the port while another thread is still writing. That scenario is not shown to be reachable, so the change is mergeable, but the owner should check how shutdown paths call end().

Explanation
The title names the main change: Uart::write() and availableForWrite() no longer use the TX semaphore when the port is not open. The raw summary confirms that write() returns 0 before begin() or for zero-size requests, and availableForWrite() returns 0 before begin(), avoiding the semaphore check. The title is specific, concise, and matches the changeset and the stated objective.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 1 files.

Synchronize the open-state check with semaphore lifetime.
If supported callers can invoke end() concurrently with UART I/O, _begun does not protect _end_tx_sem. A caller can pass the check before end() clears _begun, while end() deletes the semaphore. write() or availableForWrite() can then access the deleted handle. A multi-buffer write() can reach this state between chunks.
Protect the UART lifecycle and I/O with a persistent lock or another mechanism that waits for in-flight calls before deleting _end_tx_sem. Moving _begun = false earlier does not protect callers that already passed the check.
