overflow: scroll is refused, though React Native's overflow takes it #540

Before submitting a new issue

  • I tested using the latest version of the library, as the bug might be already fixed.
  • I tested using a supported version of react native.
  • I checked for possible duplicate issues, with possible answers.

Bug summary

React Native's overflow takes visible, hidden and scroll (FlexStyle["overflow"]). The compiler refuses scroll with a warning, so overflow: scroll sets nothing, while visible and hidden pass.

The scroll case fails, the element receiving no style:

overflow: visible -> warnings {}
overflow: hidden -> warnings {}
overflow: scroll -> warnings {"values":{"overflow":["scroll"]}}

parseOverflow (src/compiler/declarations.ts) allows visible and hidden only. auto and clip have no React Native counterpart, so refusing them stays right.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Clone the reproducer branch, which is main at 2421ea7 with one file added, src/__tests__/native/overflow-scroll.test.tsx, and install:
    git clone --branch repro/540-refused-miskeyed-values https://github.com/YevheniiKotyrlo/react-native-css
    cd react-native-css
    yarn install
  2. Run yarn jest src/__tests__/native/overflow-scroll.test.tsx.

src/__tests__/native/overflow-scroll.test.tsx:

import { render, screen } from "@testing-library/react-native";
import { View } from "react-native-css/components/View";
import { compile } from "react-native-css/compiler";
import { registerCSS, testID } from "react-native-css/jest";

test.each(["visible", "hidden", "scroll"])("overflow: %s reaches React Native", (value) => {
  console.log(`overflow: ${value} -> warnings ${JSON.stringify(compile(`.a { overflow: ${value}; }`).warnings())}`);
  registerCSS(`.a { overflow: ${value}; }`);
  render(<View testID={testID} className="a" />);
  expect(screen.getByTestId(testID).props.style).toStrictEqual({ overflow: value });
});

Expected: overflow: scroll sets overflow: "scroll", which React Native's overflow takes.

Actual: it is refused with a warning and sets nothing.
