Remove Calls to Deprecated Google Photos API Scope and Update Documentation to Explain Deprecation #207
I tried to migrate my google data to nextcloud and struggled with 403 error messages for photos, like this:
Failed to get number of Google photos: "ServerException|ClientException, message:Client error: GET https:\/\/photoslibrary.googleapis.com\/v1\/albums?pageSize=50 resulted in a `403 Forbidden
Importing data from google drive works fine. So, I checked the API settings, created a new project and oauth2 client, but I could not resolve the issue. I checked further and found a google announcement about upcoming changes in the photos API:
Shared albums and the associated API functions (share, unshare, get, join, leave, and list) will return a 403 PERMISSION_DENIED after March 31, 2025.
the scope photoslibrary.readonly、photoslibrary has been deprecated and will be removed after March 31, 2025.
After this date, any API calls using only this scope will return a 403 PERMISSION_DENIED error.
Hi everyone,
After investigation the new API and discovering how user-unfriendly the new approach was because of the significant manual action for the user and limit of 2000 pictures. It was decided that Google Photos support would be removed in #246. My recommended approach to export Google Photos data would be to use Google Takeout.
My recommended approach to export Google Photos data would be to use Google Takeout.
Do you have a recommendation, how to import the Takeout Photos into Nextcloud? So the data in the json files of the takeout is not lost.
I sadly don't have any recommendations on how to get the exif data from the json files into the pictures. I know there are tools that have been made to deal with that, but I haven't used any of them myself.
Even if there isn't a roadmap for re-implementing the now-broken functionality, the fact that the integration throws errors in regular use should be considered a bug.
Therefore, the near-term fix for this bug should be as follows:
Update the underlying code so that the integration no longer attempts to use the now-deprecated Google Photos scopes.
Add a note to the documentation explaining that Google Photos import is not currently supported (and will not be unless, I presume, some Nextcloud Enterprise client pays for it to be fixed or one of us—not Nextcloud employees—fixes it ourselves.
So: I am going to reopen this issue, but I am going to rename it to reflect the near-term fix (i.e. deprecating the broken functionality rather than recreating it).

I don't know why this pull hasn't propagated to the version in the Nextcloud App store.
Maybe it's time for a release. There are some other fixes I'd like too.
By the way, is there a reason there are no GitHub releases anymore? I enabled GitHub notifications for releases, but the last versions didn't have a GitHub release.
Looking at the Nextcloud App Store page, it says that this integration was last updated one month ago with version 4.1.0. According to the release notes, Google Photos support was removed with version 4.0.0. Looking more deeply at my own Nextcloud instance, it appears I am using version 3.2.0, and it appears this is because my managed Nextcloud hosting still has me using Nextcloud 29, which only supports up to this version. So it's my hosting provider's fault that I'm using such an old version of the app.

@MarcelRobitaille Nextcloud releases appear to be managed through a GitHub action, as you can see, e.g., here.

@MarcelRobitaille The releases are under nextcloud-releases like @elsiehupp mentioned. I'll be creating a new release when a few open prs are merged.
Good news to anyone watching this thread. Thanks to @AhsanIsEpic#356 has been merged that implements Google's photo picker api and Google Photos support will be back in the next version.

same issue here, are you open to contributions?

Hello @unnamed0ne
Thank you for raising this issue and sorry for the delay on my part. The offending code is likely in https://github.com/nextcloud/integration_google/blob/main/lib/Service/GooglePhotosAPIService.php which needs to be updated to use the new picker API. If someone is up for working on a PR I'd be available to review and test it and you can reach out to me if you need help.

@StefanSchoof Not for Nextcloud, but I used this tool to upload mine to Immich: https://github.com/simulot/immich-go

Actually it looks like the new Issue scope was fixed with #246.
