Feat: Bundle script plugins in agentop and install them with agentop script - #1507
The catalog is a new package, core/plugins/script/catalog.
Each entry is a folder under entries/<name>/: its scripts, any _ helpers, and an entry.yaml with the description and slot settings.
One entry is one directory is one slot.
It imports nothing of the plugin, so agentop links no plugin code (+100 KB).
moca-sandbox moves here from examples/, history kept.
install:
copies the folder;
adds the slot through the existing WritePluginConfig, which keeps comments, waits for the reload, and rolls back if Cortex refuses it;
checks every script in the slot started, and if not, takes back what it added and exits 1 with the reason.
Re-running install updates an outdated copy, leaves a current one alone, and refuses one you edited.
A folder copied by hand, as the v0.9.2 docs said, is adopted.
remove refuses a folder holding a file install didn't write.
list shows not installed, installed, outdated, modified or incomplete, plus how many scripts loaded. --json field names are pinned by a test, since moca will read them.
agentop's config editor can now pick out one of several script entries by its dir (ConfigChange.Match) and remove a whole entry (RemoveEntry). Existing callers are unchanged.
go vet + go test -race: core/plugins/script/... and all of cmd/agentop. cmd/cortex under local, full, lite. gofmt -l and go mod tidy -diff clean.
pytest tests/: 118 passed.
Live, on a scratch Cortex built from this branch (ports 49700-49704):
install loaded the slot with no restart, and list showed installed 1/1;
a local Bash call in a sandbox session came back as blocked__Bash;
an edit showed modified;
remove restored the config byte for byte;
with no python3 available to Cortex, install exited 1 and rolled everything back;
an outdated copy updated after a real reload;
a hand-copied folder was adopted, then removed.
A fresh reviewer found 4 Important issues, all fixed with a test that failed first:
a record-less folder could be neither installed nor removed;
an update left files the release had dropped;
an update's load check could read the old build, and a failed update was not rolled back;
Cortex's empty slot folder read as modified.
Known gaps
Files a dev build's working tree holds (.DS_Store, editor swap files) get embedded. Release builds come from clean checkouts.
Python's __pycache__, written at runtime into an installed slot whose script imports a _helper.py, makes remove refuse. No catalog entry imports a helper today.
An update doesn't push a changed fail_closed or timeout from entry.yaml into an existing slot.
If Cortex never reports the reload, install exits 0 with nothing verified.
Removing a chain's only entry leaves [], and the editor then refuses to append to it.
A comment line directly above a removed entry stays.
agentop's plugin pane still opens the first script slot whichever row you pick.
Deferred from review:
An update that changes only a _ helper triggers no reload, so install waits 30s and rolls the update back.
agentop script <action> --help, or a bad flag, prints agentop server's usage.
When a hand copy also holds a file of the user's, the refusal lists the shipped script as well, though only the user's file has to move.
The usage text, the README and the spec still say remove refuses any file install did not write, and that install on an installed copy changes nothing. Neither covers adoption.
moca-sandbox.py's docstring points to the renamed "Examples" section. Editing it would stop v0.9.2 copies being adopted.
docs/script-plugin.md has two blank lines before "Adding a bundled script".
remove, and a failed install, delete the slot folder. That drops Cortex's watch on it until a restart, so later edits don't hot-reload and an update rolls back after 30s.
With session.enabled: false, install reads the missing session API as "no slot" and rolls back.
install on an installed copy exits 0 without checking that the slot runs, e.g. with no exec bit or on_error: off.
Removing a chain's only entry from a list written without indentation writes YAML that doesn't parse, so remove fails.
The docs define incomplete as "only the slot or only the folder"; an edited copy without its slot is modified.
Comments in cmd/cortex/scripts.go and scripts_build_test.go still call moca-sandbox an example.
Next
Cut v0.9.3.
moca's sbx up calls agentop script install moca-sandbox.
Added agentop script commands to list, install, and remove bundled script plugins.
Plugin listings show installation state and support JSON output, including load status when Cortex is running. Installation supports alternate configuration files, checks that scripts start successfully, and restores changes if checks fail.
Added the Moca sandbox plugin with fail-closed behavior. Installs can update older copies, while modified plugin files and files not managed by the installer are protected from changes.
Documentation
Added guidance for managing script plugins and updated the Moca sandbox setup instructions.
Bundle Cortex's script plugins in agentop, and install or remove one with agentop script. Cortex only; moca's use of it comes later.

… failed update
A folder copied by hand (the v0.9.2 steps) or left empty by Cortex is adopted; an update removes files the release dropped, waits for the reload before checking the slot, and puts the earlier files back if the new ones do not start.

This change adds an embedded script catalog and agentop script list, install, and remove commands. It adds configuration matching and removal for script slots, installation-state reporting, ownership checks, reload and startup verification, and rollback handling. Documentation and tests now use the bundled moca-sandbox entry.
The embedded catalog validates entry names, metadata, and files. The moca-sandbox entry and related references use the catalog location. Tests check catalog contents, slot-compatible names, guide consistency, and script handshakes.
ConfigChange can select plugin entries by config values or remove a selected entry. New entries render match keys in sorted order, and boolean values render as YAML booleans.
Command entry point and catalog status cmd/agentop/main.go, cmd/agentop/cmd_script.go, cmd/agentop/cmd_script_test.go, docs/superpowers/plans/2026-10-26-agentop-script-catalog.md, docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-26-agentop-script-catalog-design.md
The script subcommand is registered. Listing reports catalog entries, installation states, and available live load metrics. Tests cover listing, command dispatch, and file-derived states.
Installation records file hashes, updates the script slot, and checks reload and startup when Cortex is available. Failures restore prior files and, when applicable, the slot. Removal refuses unrecorded files and removes the slot before recorded files. Tests cover install, update, rollback, and removal.

Installation can report completion without a confirmed reload, and a failed update can briefly leave the failing script active after rollback. Resolve these behaviors before relying on the command for automated deployment.

Do not return success while the reload is unknown.
WriteReloadTimedOut only means that Cortex has not reported a result. The new slot may still be inactive or may fail later. The current branch returns exit 0 before checking script counts, so automation can treat an unverified install as complete.
Keep the writer's deferred-write behavior. Return a non-zero pending result here, and do not remove the files while the reload can still commit.

Wait for Cortex to reload the restored files before returning.
For an existing live slot, undoFiles() restores the previous bytes, but Cortex reloads them only after the debounced file-watch event. The failed build has already become active because missing scripts do not reject Configure. The command returns immediately after undoFiles(), so a fail_closed slot can continue using the failing build until the rollback reload completes.

Summary
Reviewed the agentop script catalog: embedded catalog package, install/remove/list commands, the edit package's Match/RemoveEntry extensions, and the moca-sandbox move. The implementation is well-guarded — path-traversal checks in validName/writeFiles/removeFiles, atomic temp-file+rename writes with conservative modes (0700/0600), rollback on refused reloads and failed script starts — and the test coverage is thorough (state machine, adoption, update/rollback, JSON contract pinned by test). Two suggestion-level comments on rollback/verification timing; nothing blocking.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
suggestion: When Cortex accepts the config but never reports the reload (WriteReloadTimedOut), install exits 0 with nothing verified. That's listed as a known gap, but since moca's sbx up will call this and key on the exit code, an unverified install reading as success can mislead automation into proceeding with a possibly-not-running (fail-closed, so request-blocking) guard. Consider a distinct exit code (or a --verify-timeout flag / stderr marker moca can detect) so "installed" and "probably installed" stay distinguishable.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
suggestion: In the did-not-load failure path on an update, undoFiles() restores the earlier files but returns immediately; Cortex only picks them back up after its debounced file-watch. Until that reload lands, a fail_closed slot keeps running the failed new build, blocking every request. Consider polling PollUntilReloaded (bounded by LocalPollDeadline) after restoring, as the reload path already does above, and mentioning it in the failure message.
