fix(server): dispatch a lone idle request without the coalesce window - #658
YeonwooSung wants to merge 15 commits into
Conversation
An idle worker dispatches a request that stays alone immediately instead of holding it for idle_coalesce_ms. A one-item arrival inside that window is still the tail of a staggered burst and coalesces, and several items already pending when a batch is selected still fuse. The idle 1ms poll is now a wake-up event that submit() sets. The staggered-burst test changed because superlinked#373 deliberately stops charging the idle window to a request that arrives alone, and a burst that is already queued still fuses. Thanks, the event-based wakeup looks right to me, and the tests drive the real worker and batcher without patching the clock. A few things before merge:
- Multi-item requests.
selected.pending_count == 1(model_worker.py:1147) counts pending items, not requests, becausesubmit_manyadds one entry per item. A lone request with two or more items (batch encode, a multi-document rerank, multi-item extract) still waits the full window. Could you decide "alone" per request and add a multi-item test? - Tail check.
_follows_recent_arrivalcompares against the previous submit even after that request has finished, so a sequential client sending faster than the window still waits. The timestamps are also worker-wide whilepending_countis per LoRA batcher. Please either adjust this or document it in the docstring. - Throughput. The staggered-burst test now expects
[1, 3]instead of one fused batch. #373 asks that throughput under concurrent load stays within noise, so a short before and after on one GPU (sequential queue time, plus throughput at 8 and 32 in flight) would let us accept that trade. - Small. The "instead of polling every 1 ms" comment at
model_worker.py:288-289narrates the change, and the drain tests seed_last_arrival_atdirectly. Parking them with a two-item submit would avoid reaching into private state.

Thanks, counting distinct requests and dropping the arrival timestamps fix both points, and the new tests cover them.
Understood on the GPU. The throughput question still has to be answered before this can merge, because with the new rule a burst that is not already queued costs at least two forwards. So this will stay open until a before and after measurement on one GPU is available (sequential queue time, plus throughput at 8 and 32 in flight).
One test issue in the meantime: test_staggered_burst_shreds_without_idle_window (test_worker_core.py:713) still submits with a 5 ms stagger. Under the new rule that stagger also splits with the idle window on, so the test no longer shows what the window adds, and its docstring's "the same stagger as test_staggered_burst_fuses_with_idle_window" no longer holds since that test now uses the queued-tail pattern. Reusing the fusing test's pattern with idle_coalesce_ms=0 would make it a real contrast.
Optional: test_already_queued_burst_fuses patches the private _ensure_process_loop_started, and pending_request_count could be checked only when the worker was idle and idle_coalesce_ms > 0.
The same already-queued tail shreds when idle_coalesce_ms is 0. The GPU before/after measurement is still outstanding. Refs superlinked#373

@coderabbitai review The two actionable benchmark findings and the p95 indexing comment are fixed in 8845eab. Eleven CPU tests, public lint, scoped typecheck and independent diff review passed. Production scheduling source remains exactly the GPU-measured f556494; the PR body now reports nearest-rank p95 from the original samples. The existing human requested-changes review remains in place for the measured scheduling tradeoff. |

@krisztian-gajdar, the requested same-GPU sequential/C8/C32 comparison is now in the complete report. The measured source is a7c024f; current head 1661625 adds only that report. All 15 check runs, including CI / Required, are now successful on exact head The candidate kept all 600 sequential queue samples below 1 ms. It fused 18/24 C8 bursts, versus 3/24 with the prior yield and 24/24 with original timed coalescing. All C32 bursts split in every arm. The six paired throughput intervals and complete output differences are retained without asserting equivalence or introducing a quality margin. The remaining review decision is whether this bounded ready-callback checkpoint is an acceptable incremental implementation of the issue proposal's immediate-head/coalesced-tail behavior, while leaving the stricter one-batch-per-HTTP-burst acceptance item open. If that strict item is required for this PR, the hold remains justified. The evidence does not establish why individual C32 bursts split: nominal capacity fits, but active adaptive thresholds and ingress/dispatch decisions were not recorded. The human changes-requested hold remains in place. This handoff does not request automatic issue closure or substitute for human re-review. |

Thanks @svonava for running the comparison and @YeonwooSung for the implementation. The numbers are clear: sequential queue time drops to about 0.1 ms and throughput holds at C8 and C32.
We are not taking this as an incremental step though. The one-batch-per-burst item in #373 is required for this PR, and C8 bursts now fuse 18 of 24 times against 24 of 24 with the timed window, so the hold stays until a revision keeps the immediate head without giving up that fusion.
Two other things for the next revision:
- The branch now conflicts with main in
model_worker.py, since #807 landed the idle wakeup. Please mergeorigin/main. - Please drop
tools/benchmarks/idle_worker/ready_generation_result.md. The other harnesses undertools/benchmarks/ship without a results file, and the numbers are already in the PR body. The harness README also still namesf556494cas the measured candidate, whilea7c024f6is the revision that was measured.
Main already wakes idle workers on admission after #807. This PR additionally dispatches a lone pending request without the positive coalescing timer, including requests containing several items. Multiple pending requests on the selected batcher retain the bounded tail window. Completed requests and requests on another LoRA batcher do not hold a new request.
Integration update (2026-10-19):
ff8e65e6fa9ec378a1dc6140a5945997658ec049normally merges mainf27d528fca7daa272f03c9e5590014846849ce84into the prior head1661625e64d67024e8471a75fcde474b03c46bd3. The resolution retains the finite ready-callback checkpoint and main's admission, shutdown and cancellation paths. The combined source passed 404 affected CPU tests plus lint, formatting and scoped type checks. The L4 measurements below remain evidence for the exact earliera7c024f6source, not a new GPU or performance result for this integration. Fresh CI and review apply to the combined head; the existing human changes-requested hold and unmet strict burst criterion remain. The latest candidate adds one finite ready-callback checkpoint before the lone-head recheck. A transport callback that is already runnable can create an ASGI submission task; completing the checkpoint's Future puts the waiting worker behind that newly runnable task. Cancellation cancels the completion callback safely. Later bodies or asynchronous preparation can still miss the checkpoint, so this does not promise fusion of every HTTP burst.
The exact new measured candidate is
a7c024f6f53cce0f8e43825845c5ad6965c9c792, a direct descendant of the existing PR head8845eab5274ad571e0270c9d8c842035b5b5a426. The original author and commit history are preserved. Any later main integration or benchmark packaging commit must be identified separately from the measured source.A fixed same-device comparison ran six balanced triplets of original timed coalescing (
b0c26b02), priorsleep(0)(8845eab5), and the candidate (a7c024f6): ABC, CBA, BCA, ACB, CAB, BAC. All 18 fresh-server trials completed through the actual SIE HTTP API andsie_sdk.SIEClienton one L4 with 8 CPU cores and 32 GiB memory. All arms used the pinned public GLiClass checkpoint, identical FP16/default-profile graph settings, asyncio, and four intra-op/one inter-op Torch threads. Full outputs, wire bytes, request identities, timing headers, and worker batch joins were retained for all 119,432 calls.sleep(0)Candidate/original throughput geometric ratios were 1.01095 at C8 (pointwise 95% interval 0.99637–1.02574) and 1.00010 at C32 (0.97286–1.02811). Candidate/prior ratios were 0.99319 and 0.98980. The complete evidence report contains all 18 trial rows, all six raw process-pair ratios in both directions, every burst pattern, and artifact hashes. Six pairs on one device, with no predefined equivalence margin, do not establish statistical equivalence or a speed guarantee.
All classification label sets, ordered labels, winning labels, and other nonnumeric output structure were unchanged. Sequential outputs were exact. Across all phases the maximum direct score difference was 0.00390625 in every arm, with the same maximum range within each arm's repeated outputs. These differences are reported without introducing a new quality tolerance.
The strict issue requirement that every concurrent HTTP burst forms one batch remains unfulfilled: six candidate C8 bursts split
[1, 7], and all C32 bursts split in every arm. The method recordscompleted_valid: trueseparately fromqualification_passed: false. The human changes-requested hold remains. This result supplies the requested same-GPU sequential/C8/C32 evidence for review of the latency/coalescing tradeoff; it does not close the issue automatically.Prior evidence remains part of the record. The prior PR description reported negative C32 deltas in all three original-versus-
0649b283pairs (−2.85%, −2.16%, −1.64%); these earlier reported values are retained as historical context, not a new raw-data recomputation. The subsequent six-trial yield experiment (f556494c, production-identical to8845eab5) kept sub-millisecond sequential queues but split C8 bursts[1, 7]in 11/12 cases. Its unchanged raw result SHA256 is0c89a0b4693cffe29225415eace97e6551c2b426ca4eb99693b5da75c347ed4b. These were separate allocations and are not pooled with the new result. The new protocol's first attempt failed before inference on a cache mount-alias verifier defect; that failure and its narrowly corrected CPU controls remain retained.Source validation: 255 related worker/batcher cases passed, with focused finite-generation, late-body, cancellation, and lone-request controls on asyncio and installed uvloop. Four relevant controls fail against the prior
sleep(0)implementation. Standard lint and scoped type checks passed. The existing publictools/benchmarks/idle_worker/two-arm harness and history remain unchanged. The report specifies the three-arm method and explicitly discloses that its additional full-wire/ownership tooling is not yet a public one-command reproducer. Fresh full CI and exact-head review are still required for any published integration head. The new experiment used
knowledgator/gliclass-large-v1.0revisionae8a18644e84cfda53325bd91c7941f2f6fd0ccb, Python 3.12.12, Torch 2.9.1+cu129, Transformers 4.57.6, GLiClass 0.1.17, gliformer 0.1.2, httpx 0.28.1, and uvicorn 0.46.0. Balanced order does not remove shared-device thermal/cache/JIT or process variation. The HTTP observations cover the Python worker, not the queue-only gateway/sidecar path. Provider shutdown, empty tasks, local process reap, and lease release were verified.A subsequent bounded diagnostic on one L4 added synchronous tracing of HTTP body completion, parsed/prepared item IDs, admission, extraction limits, and logical adapter forwards. It used the same original and candidate source revisions and pinned runtime, with four warmup calls and one C8/C32 burst per arm: 88 actual SDK sends, 88 complete response/body joins, and no retries. This is a separate instrumented diagnostic, not another performance qualification.
[8][1, 7][16, 16][17, 15]Every observed extraction selected all then-admitted items. The cost/request caps remained 16,384/64; no pending item was excluded by those caps. For each split, the missing requests' header and body-complete callbacks occurred after the first extraction. In the candidate C8 case, only the head was pending at both ready-checkpoint entry and exit. Separately, the flat-label GLiClass adapter partitioned selected worker batches into logical forward chunks of at most eight rows. No already-admitted item was left behind, and no missing request had reached its recorded header/body-complete callback before the first selection. The trace does not identify client, socket, kernel-readiness, or event-loop causes of the later callbacks, or explain historical splits.
Synchronous tracing and the short warmup history can change scheduling. The strict one-batch burst criterion remains unmet, and the prior numerical/throughput verdicts and human review hold remain unchanged. The single owned app was verified stopped with zero containers and no tasks, all owned local processes were reaped, and all three resource leases were released. The retained diagnostic archive SHA256 is
