New usermods/fs_sync keeps the whole LittleFS file system in sync between instances that share a sync group, over UDP (default port 21325):

  • Periodic incremental FS scan builds a manifest (path, size, mtime, CRC32 per file); the manifest checksum is announced to the subnet broadcast address
  • Sync group scoping reuses WLED's send/receive group bitmasks, with the same semantics as the built-in state sync (udp.cpp)
  • Peers with a differing manifest are asked for it; missing or older files are pulled in ~1300 byte chunks, verified by size + CRC32 and atomically renamed into place (newest mtime wins, ties broken by unit ID)
  • Device-unique files (wled.cfg, net.cfg, sec.json, wsec.json, /bkp.*, *.part, *.bak) are never synced; deletions are not propagated
  • Optional shared passphrase adds a CRC32 packet tag
  • Settings (enable, port, scan interval, passphrase) on the Usermod Settings page; status in /json/info; manual rescan via {"FS Sync":{"syncNow":true}}

Verified by compiling esp32dev and nodemcuv2 (fs_sync linked in both) and npm test (16/16 pass). Runtime behavior on hardware was tested and working \o/

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added synchronization of .gif and .bmp files between ESP32 devices in intersecting sync groups. Newer files take precedence by modification time, with device ID breaking ties.
    • Added sync settings, status and error information, and a manual rescan option. A shared passphrase is required for file transfers.
  • Limitations
    • Incoming writes are blocked while an OTA lock is active. Deletions and file types other than .gif and .bmp are not synchronized.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup guidance, configuration details, requirements, limitations, and security information.

Timestamp: 2026-10-19T20:18:21.933Z
Learning: In wled/WLED, /wsec.json stores security-sensitive credentials and must remain device-local. File synchronization features, including usermods/fs_sync/fs_sync.cpp, must never transmit or remotely replace this file. Security review must check filesystem path aliases as well as the literal /wsec.json path.

Walkthrough

The new ESP32 FS Sync usermod scans eligible image files and exchanges manifests and file data with peers over UDP. It selects files by modification time and unit ID, then verifies received files before replacing targets. It also adds configuration, status reporting, manual scan controls, and documentation.

Changes

Filesystem synchronization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Protocol and filesystem scan
usermods/fs_sync/fs_sync.cpp
The usermod defines packet and manifest data, tracks peers, validates eligible paths, and scans files to maintain the local manifest.
Manifest exchange and verified file transfer
usermods/fs_sync/fs_sync.cpp
The usermod exchanges chunked manifests, selects and queues files, and sends and receives file chunks. Received files are staged and replace targets only after size and CRC checks. Canonical modification times are stored in /fssync.meta.
Configuration and usermod integration
usermods/fs_sync/fs_sync.cpp, usermods/fs_sync/library.json, usermods/fs_sync/readme.md
The usermod adds setup and loop handling, configuration, status reporting, and a manual rescan action. The README describes operation, requirements, settings, and limitations.

Explanation

The title "Add FS Sync usermod to synchronize the file system within a sync group" matches the main change: the PR adds the ESP32-only FS Sync usermod, which synchronizes files between WLED instances in a sync group over UDP. It is specific and does not describe anything absent from the changeset. The title is 70 characters, which is within a reasonable length for a single-sentence title.

- Line 526: Update the sequence-gap handling in the receiver’s `abortIncoming()`
path to re-request the file immediately instead of relying on the stall timeout.
Preserve the retry limit: increment `inRetries`, set `inPending` and `inLastMs`,
and call `sendFileReq` when retries remain; otherwise report the transfer
failure with `setError`.
- Line 103: Change the default value of syncCfg to false in its declaration and
in the getJsonValue fallback so configuration loading also defaults to not
syncing cfg.json. Update the README’s documented default to match, and ensure
wled.cfg remains excluded from synchronization regardless of syncCfg.
- Around line 810-818: Harden the receive path around the passCrc validation:
reject file writes when the passphrase is empty, and replace the forgeable CRC32
check with HMAC-SHA256 over the header and payload plus a nonce or timestamp,
keyed by the passphrase. Also reject writes while otaLock is set, or require
equivalent protection before accepting them.
- Around line 899-906: Implement an addToJsonInfo() override alongside
addToJsonState() that exposes peerCount, manifestCnt, errCount, and lastError
under root["u"] for the FS Sync Info page.

Usermod::appendConfigData(Print&) in wled00/fcn_declare.h:373 provides a compatibility shim that invokes the legacy no-argument virtual hook. The oappend() calls are valid through that shim, so FsSyncUsermod::appendConfigData() override matches the base class and does compile. The proposed replacement is unnecessary and would bypass the established compatibility path.

@coderabbitai please check if this PR would allow to replace / overwrite or exfiltrate wsec.json from a board. This file contains security-sensitive information and credentials that should never leave the device.

@softhack007 Yes. I found a path-validation bypass that can expose /wsec.json, at least on ESP8266. I did not establish a working overwrite path.

High severity: credential disclosure through path aliases

In usermods/fs_sync/fs_sync.cpp, fsSyncPathOk() checks only the final basename (Line 214–218).

Requested path Validator result LittleFS resolution
/wsec.json Rejected /wsec.json
/wsec.json/ Accepted: basename is empty /wsec.json
/wsec.json/. Accepted: basename is . /wsec.json

I checked the LittleFS source bundled with ESP8266 Arduino 3.1.2. Its resolver skips trailing slashes and . components before it checks whether another component requires a directory.

The disclosure path is:

  1. handleFileReq() accepts an alias through fsSyncPathOk() (Line 699–706).
  2. It opens that path for reading (Line 717).
  3. serviceOutgoing() reads the file and sends its contents in UDP packets (Line 528–543).

The requester does not need a manifest entry for the file. Excluding /wsec.json from the normal scan therefore does not prevent this disclosure.

With the default empty passphrase, a sender that can reach the UDP port can supply a matching sync-group bit. The board must also have a nonzero send group to transmit the response. Disabling cfg sync does not close this bypass.

Replacement or overwrite

The exact /wsec.json path is blocked both when processing a remote manifest (Line 659) and before starting an incoming transfer (Line 745).

The aliases above would produce temporary paths such as:

/wsec.json/.part
/wsec.json/..part

Those paths require traversal through the existing regular file /wsec.json as if it were a directory. Temporary-file creation should fail before installation.

Thus, the disclosure path is supported by source inspection; replacement or overwrite is not demonstrated by this analysis. I did not run a hardware test, and I have not verified all ESP32 filesystem variants.

Required fix direction

Reject noncanonical file paths at network ingress, before the basename exclusion check. Reject trailing slashes, empty components, . components, .. components, and embedded NUL bytes in the length-delimited wire path. Use the validated path unchanged for filesystem access.

Regression coverage should include direct file requests and remote manifests for all three paths in the table. This disclosure is sufficient to block merging until corrected.

Thanks for clarifying the device-local security requirement.

@coderabbitai what are the worst-case consequences if this usermod replaces or updates presets.json without synchronising with webUI and with the presets&playlist handlers?

@softhack007 The worst supported outcome is loss of the complete preset library, with inconsistent preset execution and possible propagation of the damaged library to other boards. This is more than a Web UI refresh problem.

I checked the current PR code and the preset, playlist, and Web UI handlers. There is some cache invalidation, but no complete coordination.

1. The complete preset library can be lost

In usermods/fs_sync/fs_sync.cpp, Line 784 deletes the existing file. Line 785 then renames the received .part file.

If power fails between those operations, or if the rename fails, /presets.json is missing. On failure, Line 797 also removes the received .part file. This path does not preserve the previous library as a backup.

This is not an atomic replacement. My earlier reply repeated that description incorrectly.

A later preset save calls initPresetsFile(). If the library is missing, that function creates an empty library. It does not recover the previous presets.

2. A local edit can disappear without an error

The usermod can download a remote library over multiple loop iterations. During that transfer, a user can save or delete a local preset.

When the transfer finishes, the usermod replaces the whole file. It does not recheck whether the local file changed after the download started.

For example:

  1. A board starts receiving a remote library.
  2. A user saves preset 10 locally.
  3. The Web UI reports the save.
  4. The download finishes and replaces the library.
  5. The user's saved preset disappears.

There is also an open-file coordination problem. writeObjectToFile() leaves its writable handle open through doCloseFile. In wled00/wled.cpp, UsermodManager::loop() runs at Line 104, before closeFile() at Line 124. The usermod can therefore replace a file whose local writer has not yet closed it.

The exact result depends on the filesystem implementation. The missing coordination is confirmed; additional filesystem corruption from that sequence is not demonstrated.

3. The Web UI and device can execute different versions of the same preset

The Web UI keeps preset contents in pJson. For ordinary presets, setPreset() sends those cached contents directly with "pd". It does not necessarily ask the device to read the preset from disk.

After a remote replacement:

  • A Web UI click can apply the old cached contents.
  • A button, timer, API preset request, or playlist step can load the new on-disk contents.
  • A stale editor can overwrite or delete a remotely changed preset under the same ID.

The usermod does update presetsModifiedTime at Lines 791–795. However, parseInfo() only assigns the new pmt; it does not reload pJson. The timestamp can also remain unchanged if two updates occur in the same second, which can leave the PSRAM response cache stale.

4. A running playlist can combine old timing with new actions

loadPlaylist() copies preset IDs, durations, and transitions into RAM. Each playlist step then loads the referenced preset from the file.

If synchronization replaces the library during playback, the playlist can continue with old IDs and timing but new preset contents. Missing IDs can produce preset-load errors. Reassigned IDs can change brightness, effects, segments, or power state unexpectedly.

Returning from a nested playlist also reloads the parent playlist by ID. The replacement can therefore change or remove the parent while the child is running.

File replacement alone does not immediately change the current LED output. The change occurs when a handler next loads an affected preset.

5. CRC validation does not guarantee a consistent library

Outgoing transfers read the live file over multiple iterations. Local preset writes can occur between those reads. The sender calculates CRC over the bytes it actually sends.

Consequently, a mixed or invalid JSON file can still pass size and CRC checks. The receiver does not validate the JSON or WLED's preset-file format before installation. If that file is subsequently advertised and selected by peers, the damage can spread.

Required protection

I would treat unrestricted live synchronization of /presets.json as a merge blocker. A safe integration needs:

  • A stable outgoing snapshot.
  • A local revision check before committing an incoming file.
  • Coordination with pending writes and open file handles.
  • Preset-format validation and rollback-safe replacement.
  • Explicit Web UI refresh and stale-edit handling.
  • A defined policy for active playlists.

These conclusions come from source inspection. I did not establish a crash, permanent device failure, or hardware damage from this path.

Also, I wanted to have a button to force a sync, rather than periodically check (cpu cost...). But I don't know where is the best place to put this, maybe PixelForge, but conditionnal to the usermod being enabled? or is there a way to put this in a "usermod setting/page" ? I would prefer in PixelForge, that would be awesome (and make more sense, UX-wise imho).

@Liliputech usermods have a callback hook handleButton(b), maybe that's useful in your case. Unfortunately the callback is not very well documented, but you can find some examples if you search for handleButton in the usermods folders.

I think adding usermod-specific UI items to pixelforge would not be a good idea, considering that 99% of all users will never run your usermod.

AR has a slider in the info tab. Can a button be added there? I am not familiar with that code part but if a slider is possible, a button should be too?

Only .gif and .bmp files (the formats the "Image" effect can display,
see image_loader.cpp) are synced now. The path filter changed from a
blocklist to an allowlist, so the device configuration (cfg.json),
wsec.json (WiFi passwords), presets, WLED backup files and temporary
files are never sent or received, and the phantom exclusions for files
that do not exist on a real device (net.cfg, wled.cfg, sec.json, *.bak)
are gone. The syncCfg option is removed from the settings page and
config. The presets cache invalidation on file receive is removed as
dead code. Readme updated to match.

File transfers now require a shared passphrase: without one, instances
only discover each other - no files are requested, served or written.
When a passphrase is set, every packet (protocol v2) carries a unix
timestamp and a truncated HMAC-SHA256 tag (mbedtls, RFC 2104) over
header, payload and timestamp, keyed by the passphrase; the timestamp
is checked against a +/-300s window for replay protection when the
receiver has a synced clock (NTP). The previous CRC32 tag was forgeable
(CRC32 is affine, so one observed packet reveals the effective key).

Incoming file writes are rejected while the OTA lock is enabled, and a
locked device does not pull files either. The passphrase can also be
set at compile time via -D USERMOD_FS_SYNC_PASSPHRASE='"..."' (used
when none is configured at runtime; embedded in the firmware binary).

The usermod is ESP32 only (mbedtls): it fails with a clear #error on
ESP8266, following the in-tree convention for platform-specific usermods.

Readme updated: configuration, compile-time passphrase, requirements,
limitations and security note.

Co-authored-by: Mistral Large 4 (Mistral Vibe) <[email protected]>
A packet arriving out of order aborted the incoming transfer, but the
comment claimed a retry via the stall timeout - that path was dead:
abortIncoming() clears inActive while inPending is already false, so
serviceIncoming()'s stall branch never fired and the transfer was
silently dropped until the next scan/announce cycle, without touching
the retry counter.

The retry block is now shared in retryIncoming() (increment inRetries,
set inPending and inLastMs, sendFileReq; setError once the retry limit
is reached) and is called from both the stall-timeout path and the
sequence-gap path, so a lost or reordered packet triggers an immediate
re-request and gap- and stall-retries share the same retry limit.

Preserve the winning mtime when installing a file.

handleFileData() replaces the target and then touchLocal() records the receiver's getLastWrite() value. A later scan advertises that local value instead of the received manifest mtime. If another peer makes a same-size edit with a different CRC while its clock is behind, remoteWins() can reject that edit. The peer can then download the older content back and overwrite the later edit.

Carry the winning mtime through the transfer and persist it as the canonical mtime used by future scans. Updating only upsertEntry() is not sufficient because serviceScan() reads the filesystem mtime again. The ESP32 File API exposes getLastWrite() but no setter, so this requires either a supported filesystem timestamp-setting operation or persistent FS Sync metadata that scans consult while the stored CRC still matches.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Let LittleFS replace the destination atomically.

After the image passes size and CRC checks, WLED_FS.remove(inPath) deletes the valid image before WLED_FS.rename(inPart, inPath) runs. LittleFS permits renaming over an existing same-type file, but the rename can still fail. The failure path then removes .part, leaving no image at inPath. Remove the pre-delete and rely on LittleFS replacement semantics.

Add the missing addToJsonInfo() override next to addToJsonState():
peer count, manifest file count, sent/received counters, error count
and the last error are published under the "u" object of /json/info,
which the Info page renders as flat label/value rows.

Labels are "FS Sync"-prefixed to avoid collisions with other usermods
(Battery/AHT10 convention). The last error string is wrapped in a
single-element array because the Info page's val[1] check would render
a raw multi-character string as only its first two characters.

Readme: describe the actual row shape under "u".

Major: Isolate manifest reassembly per peer (Lines 693-698).

manRunCrc, manGotChunks, and manChunks are global, but the handler does not record src or require idx to be the next chunk. Responses from two peers can be interleaved, producing a mixed CRC and clearing the shared request queue. Store the source and expected chunk index in the reassembly state, then reject or reset mismatched chunks.

Major: Bound every received chunk by the first declared size (Lines 811-814 and 834-845).

The initial check can wrap at (size_t)total + 8192. Later chunks can also replace inTotal, and the code never checks that inGot + dLen remains within the declared transfer size. A peer with the passphrase can consume LittleFS space with authenticated chunks. Store the first total, reject later changes, use overflow-safe free-space arithmetic, and reject writes that exceed the remaining size.

As per coding guidelines: “Validate all untrusted external input (HTTP/JSON/UDP/serial) before index/length/pin usage.” As per path instructions, UDP payload values remain untrusted until the usermod validates and range-clamps them.

Correct two statements that did not match the implementation:

- The Image effect displays lowercase .gif files only
  (image_loader.cpp); .bmp files are synced as plain file
  distribution, not because the Image effect can display them.
  Fixed in the readme and the header comment of fs_sync.cpp.
- Conflict resolution compares raw modification times: the later
  mtime wins even if a device clock is ahead, so the winning file
  may be the older edit, and the unit ID breaks only exact mtime
  ties. Removed the misleading claim that sync still converges
  without NTP.

Remove the existing image before rename, so a failed rename loses the previous file.

The receive path deletes the current image before it renames the CRC-checked temporary file into place. If rename then fails, the previous valid image is already gone. The else branch also removes the temporary file, so nothing remains at inPath. LittleFS rename replaces an existing destination of the same type, so the pre-delete is not needed for the swap. Removing it keeps the old image in place when the rename fails.

…e before rename

The FS API has no mtime setter, so a received file's getLastWrite() is
the local receive time, not the mtime that won conflict resolution.
That made manifests of instances which synced the same file diverge
(perpetual manifest re-requests), let conflict resolution compare
against the receive time instead of the winning mtime, and lost the
canonical mtime on reboot.

The winning mtime now travels from considerRemoteFile() through the
want queue into the install flow, and touchLocal() records it in a
small persistent sidecar (/fssync.meta, written to a tmp file and
renamed over) together with the file's size, FS mtime and CRC32.
serviceScan() and considerRemoteFile() reuse the recorded values while
the file is unchanged; local edits and vanished files drop the entry.
The sidecar is local metadata and is never synced.

Also remove the pre-delete of the target before renaming the .part
file over it: LittleFS rename replaces an existing target, so a failed
rename no longer leaves the existing image deleted.

Fix the stale claim in the fsSyncPathOk() comment that .bmp is a
format the Image effect can display, and document the sidecar in the
readme.

- serviceScan(): reject relative file names that would not fit with the
  leading slash before the memmove that prefixes it (a 40-char name
  wrote the NUL one byte past the buffer).
- handleManifest(): track the source peer and the expected next chunk
  index for the reassembly. Chunks from another peer or with a wrong
  index are rejected, so interleaved responses no longer mix CRC state
  and a spurious CRC mismatch no longer clears the shared request
  queue. A chunk with index 0 from the same peer restarts the stream,
  and a stalled reassembly (lost chunk) resets after the stall timeout;
  the next announce re-requests the manifest.
- handleFileData(): the declared total size is taken from the first
  chunk only and a later change aborts the transfer; the free-space
  check uses 64-bit arithmetic so total + margin cannot overflow; each
  chunk is rejected before writing when it exceeds the remaining
  declared size.

🟡 Minor · Rebind the UDP socket when the configured port changes. · fs_sync.cpp:1076-1097

usermods/fs_sync/fs_sync.cpp:1076-1097
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Rebind the UDP socket when the configured port changes.

The runtime settings path calls UsermodManager::readFromConfig(), which updates port while FS Sync remains enabled. udpStarted remains true, so loop() does not call connected() again. Outgoing packets use the new destination port, but receiveUdp() continues reading from the socket bound to the old port. Peers using the new port can therefore remain unreachable until a later socket reinitialization.

Suggested fix
     bool readFromConfig(JsonObject& root) override {
+      uint16_t oldPort = port;
       JsonObject top = root[FPSTR(_name)];
       bool configComplete = !top.isNull();
       configComplete &= getJsonValue(top[FPSTR(_enabled)], enabled);
       configComplete &= getJsonValue(top["port"], port, FS_SYNC_DEF_PORT);
       configComplete &= getJsonValue(top["scan"], scanSecs, 60);
       configComplete &= getJsonValue(top["pass"], passphrase);
       if (!port || port == udpPort || port == udpPort2) port = FS_SYNC_DEF_PORT; // avoid clashing with WLED's own ports
+      if (enabled && udpStarted && oldPort != port) {
+        udp.stop();
+        udpStarted = udp.begin(port);
+      }
       if (scanSecs < 10) scanSecs = 10;

Check the serializeJson byte count against measureJson(doc) and verify the
document is complete (root not null, member count matches meta size) before
renaming the tmp file over /fssync.meta. Remove the tmp file and report the
error on validation or rename failure so a truncated or partial write can no
longer destroy the existing sidecar.

Comment thread usermods/fs_sync/fs_sync.cpp
Reopen /fssync.meta.tmp after writing and compare the persisted bytes with
the intended serialization before renaming it over /fssync.meta. A failed
reopen or any mismatch removes the tmp file and reports the error, so a
filesystem that reports a successful write but persists short or corrupt
data can no longer replace the existing sidecar.
