looks good in general, code needs some cleanup, I assume this is AI coded given there are some weird choices? |
|
@DedeHai It's not AI code, I guess the weird choices are because I am not very experienced with the codebase. So thanks for the pointers! |

Learning: In WLED effect/overlay implementations (C++ under wled00), ensure effects operate through the SEGMENT.* read/write APIs for their own pixels/overlay state. Reserve global frame reads/writes like strip.getPixelColor* for copy_* style post-processing only. Do not manually composite/blend across lower layers inside the effect; segment-to-segment blending is handled later by WS2812FX::blendSegment(), so effects should produce their per-segment contributions without trying to composite with underlying layers themselves.

Learning: In WLED v16+, values returned by SEGMENT.color_from_palette (ColorFromPalette/ColorFromPalette pipeline) are already in linear (gamma-free) space. When using palette-derived colors for brightness calculations, comparisons, or blending (e.g., Twinklefox “twinkle pixels” that come from palette lookup), do not apply gamma32inv() (or other gamma32 inversions) to those palette-derived colors before scaling/brightness logic. Applying gamma32inv() to already-linear palette colors will artificially brighten and can shift hue. Only apply gamma8/32 inversions to inputs that are known to still be gamma-encoded (e.g., certain background/other sources as appropriate); keep palette-derived colors as-is for linear comparisons.

why? if you already detect the head here, all you need to do is calculate the brightness here and you can remove the loop below right?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Yes, true. Now it stores the snake index in the cell and uses that to render it in one loop.

nice, looks good now. just a few nitpicks:

@DedeHai Great! I've fixed the comments |
This PR adds a new 2D effect called "Snakes".
Showcase
The effect displays several "Snakes" (like the classic game) that walk randomly around the screen while avoiding collisions with each other. It has parameters for speed, snake length, the number of snakes and a "smooth" parameter that makes snakes interpolate between steps rather than "jump" to the next position.
These demos run on a 64x64 HUB75 display using a Waveshare ESP32-S3-RGB-Matrix board.
Here it is running at low speed with
Smooth=false:And at high speed with
Smooth=true:Implementation
Every turn, each snake tries to move to an unoccupied square next to it. It has a random chance to prefer turning over going straight. It's not very clever and means snakes can get "stuck" temporarily, but that doesn't look too bad to me (you can see it in the fast video above).
The effect uses a
W*H*2matrix to track which spaces are occupied (and by what). This gives very fast collision detection, but is not the most memory-efficient algorithm. It still seems reasonable considering there are 2D effects that allocate 3 or 4 bytes per pixel. It also allocates arrays for keeping track of each snake's head (position, direction etc.) and for memoizing colors calculated from the palette, but that should be negligible in comparison.Let me know if you'd prefer I just add this as a usermod instead.
