My Lazy Grid Clock was stuck in a reboot loop after I enabled the SSDR usermod in V16.0.1.

What changed

WLED draws the first frame in beginStrip(), before the usermods' setup(). With SSDR enabled in cfg.json, handleOverlayDraw() wrote into the LED mask while it was still nullptr → Exception (29) on every boot.

  • allocate the LED mask on demand before drawing; skip drawing if allocation fails
  • re-allocate the mask when the LED count changes
  • fix an off-by-one that wrote one byte past the mask

Testing

  • Verified on ESP8266 (77 LEDs): boot loop reproduced with the old build (decoded stack trace), fixed build boots with SSDR enabled, clock digits match the configured LED maps.
  • Compiled for ESP8266 and ESP32 (not run on ESP32 hardware).

AI disclosure

Root-cause analysis and code were done with AI assistance (Claude Code); changed code is marked with // AI: comments. I reviewed and tested the change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The y display-mask token now shows the last two digits of the year instead of seconds.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved display-mask handling to avoid out-of-range access.
    • Overlay rendering now skips drawing when the mask is unavailable.
    • Improved handling of mask allocation and resizing failures, including changes to the display strip length.

440-440: Minor — Retry mask allocation after a failed allocation.

When setup or mask resizing leaves umSSDRMask null, this guard returns before another allocation attempt. A transient allocation failure disables the display until reboot. Retry allocation at a bounded interval before returning.

Walkthrough

The usermod now renders the year’s last two digits for the y token. It also checks mask availability, bounds mask iteration by the LED count, and handles mask allocation and resizing failures.

Mask loops stop before umSSDRLength. Setup uses d_malloc and sets the length to zero if allocation fails. Overlay drawing checks display state and mask availability, and handles LED-count changes and reallocation failure.

WLED draws the first frame in beginStrip(), before the usermods' setup(). With SSDR enabled in cfg.json, handleOverlayDraw() wrote into the LED mask while it was still nullptr → Exception (29) on every boot.

can you explain? if the usermod worked before, why is it broken now? what you describe here sounds more like a core bug.

Sorry for the AI comment but I think this describes it best:

I last used this usermod with version 0.13, so the crash showed up for me after updating to 16.0.1. It is triggered by a core change in 16.0.1.

The order beginStrip() → UsermodManager::setup() is the same since 0.13, and beginStrip() already registers handleOverlayDraw as show callback. But up to 0.15 beginStrip() only called strip.show() when "Turn LEDs on after power up" was off (turnOnAtBoot == false, default is on). Since 16.0.1 beginStrip() calls strip.show() on every boot when no relay is used (if (rlyPin < 0) strip.show();, wled.cpp), so the overlay of every usermod now runs once before its setup(). SSDR allocates its mask in setup(), so it dereferences nullptr.

So yes, it's a core ordering issue that could affect other usermods with state allocated in setup() too. Options I see:

  1. core: register the show callback (or allow overlay drawing) only after UsermodManager::setup()
  2. usermod: the defensive allocation in this PR (also fixes the off-by-one and LED count changes)

Not tested: whether 0.14/0.15 with "Turn LEDs on after power up" disabled crashed the same way. Happy to change this PR to whatever you prefer.

so the overlay of every usermod now runs once before its setup()

that is a bit iffy and may need to be looked at (cc @willmmiles)
on the other hand, it can also be fixed in the usermod, the off-by-ones also clearly were bugs.

question: since you left the AI markers, did you review and fully understand the code you submitted?

Yes the code was review and even fully tested on a real device.

I would also recommend that each usermod fixes this kind of issue, even when the core is the root cause. Some changes like that can always happen and the usermod should be able to handle this.

AI's love to make functions for no good reason. The simplest fix would be to check for null pointer. Most usermods als have a "initialized" flag and run nothing until setup has actually run.

edit: I think the realloc in the original code is also not used correctly.

@DedeHai I found one other initialization-order issue in Analog Clock, but no other SSDR-style null-buffer crash in the overlay implementations I inspected.

Analog Clock

In usermods/Analog_Clock/Analog_Clock.cpp:

  • readFromConfig() loads the configured segment endpoints, but skips validateAndUpdate() until initDone is true (Line 244).
  • setup() updates the cached segment size (Line 145).
  • handleOverlayDraw() checks enabled, but not initDone (Line 156).

If Analog Clock is enabled at boot, its first overlay can therefore use configured endpoints with the constructor’s default size of 60. This can select incorrect pixels before setup(). I did not find a null-pointer dereference in that path. An !initDone guard would prevent this early draw.

Other overlays checked

Usermod Relevant behavior before setup()
Original Seven Segment Display Its display buffer starts empty. The drawing loop stops at the first zero character.
Cronixie Its digit arrays already have initial values. setup() is empty.
Ping Pong Clock Its drawing state and lookup table already have initial values. setup() is empty.
Word Clock Its LED mask is an initialized member array, not a buffer allocated in setup().
Klipper Percentage printPercent starts at zero, so its pixel loops do not run.
GyroSurge Its filter constructor initializes the state to zero. setup() is empty.
Example / boblight Their overlay callbacks are empty.

The core ordering concern is real in this checkout. beginStrip() registers the overlay callback and calls strip.show() when rlyPin < 0. UsermodManager::setup() runs afterward. The manager has no initialization guard.

I recommend preventing usermod overlay dispatch until usermod setup completes. That would address the shared lifecycle issue. SSDR’s off-by-one and allocation handling remain separate concerns.

This was static inspection of the PR checkout, not hardware testing.

You are interacting with an AI system.

WLED draws the first frame in beginStrip(), before UsermodManager::setup()
runs. With "enabled" already read from cfg.json, handleOverlayDraw() wrote
into umSSDRMask while it was still nullptr, so every boot ended in
Exception (29) and the device was stuck in a boot loop.

- allocate the mask once in setup() and skip the overlay while it is not
allocated
- fix off-by-one in _setAllFalse() / _setMaskToLeds() (i <= length wrote
  one byte past the mask)

Tested on ESP8266 (WLED All-in-one Controller, 77 LEDs): boots with SSDR
enabled, clock digits verified against the configured LED maps.
Compiled for ESP8266 and ESP32 (lazy_grid_clock_* envs).

I simplified some things. The helper is gone. The mask is allocated once in setup(), and handleOverlayDraw() skips drawing while it's null. The broken realloc is removed. If the LED count changes at runtime, the mask is now resized with d_realloc_malloc().

good progres. never use force push on open PRs it messes up the review process and confuses the rabbit.

`*map != nullptr` compared a String object against nullptr instead of
checking the pointer. Replace it and `equals("")` with `isEmpty()`.
The 'y' format displayed the seconds instead of the last two digits
of the year, as documented in the readme.
