Database changes follow the db repo rules, or this PR does not change the database. Comment /migrate to apply migrations to staging (Codebloom team only).
I QA'd this in dev and attached screenshots below. If staging could not be checked, say why.
The change adds SOPS-managed shared environment configuration, updates LASS gRPC settings and client configuration, and adds Justfile targets and Git hooks for authentication, development environment loading, SOPS operations, and encryption checks.
Changes: Shared Environment and LASS Configuration
Adds encrypted gRPC settings and Azure Key Vault SOPS metadata. Adds a SOPS creation rule for .env.shared.yaml and removes .env.shared from .gitignore.
LASS environment and client configuration example.env, internal/leetcode-auth-service/src/config.rs, internal/leetcode-auth-service/src/grpc/client/lass.rs
Replaces the old LASS URL and timeout settings with host, TLS, and timeout settings. The sample names the host GPRC_LASS_HOST, while the Rust configuration reads GRPC_LASS_HOST. The Rust code constructs a URL from the host and TLS setting, then passes the renamed URL and timeout fields to GrpcLASS.
Development commands and Git hooks Justfile, pre-commit, pre-push
Adds Azure authentication, SOPS, environment-loading, and hook-installation targets. The pre-commit hook checks staged .env.shared.yaml files for sops:. The pre-push hook checks matching files in outgoing commits for sops:.
Patina-Network/codebloom#1062: Adds the service, LASS client, and las-dev target that this change further configures.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 1c1f1
Shared LASS settings are now SOPS-encrypted, but the TLS scheme logic is inverted and the client has no TLS setup, so the default configuration probably cannot reach LASS and a TLS-enabled setup sends credentials in plaintext. The example environment file uses misspelled variable names, and existing LASS settings are silently ignored. The Git hooks meant to keep secrets out of history can be bypassed in several ways, and hook installation fails in Git worktrees. Fix these before merging, especially the TLS handling and the hook gaps.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 1c1f1
The new TLS setting selects an unencrypted connection when enabled. Shared-file publication checks also have bypass gaps, and the migration removes protection for a legacy environment file still used by test commands. The committed shared settings are encrypted; no credential disclosure or excessive vault permissions were established.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · observed: GRPC_LASS_TLS=true constructs an http:// endpoint, while false constructs https://. The endpoint is used by an RPC carrying the configured login and password and returning session credentials. Enabling the new TLS control therefore does not enforce transport encryption. Disclosure requires a reachable plaintext peer and network access; a TLS-only peer may instead reject the connection.
Low · security · observed: The newly introduced hooks do not establish that every published shared-settings version is encrypted. Commit-enumeration failures can leave a successful exit status, new-branch selection excludes history reachable from unrelated remotes, and file discovery omits root/merge cases. Both hooks also accept a literal sops: marker rather than verifying encrypted contents. Ordinary linear commits without that marker are rejected, but this protection is conditional on local hook installation and execution.
Low · security · inferred: The PR removes the repository ignore entry for .env.shared, although backend-test and backend-testd still load that legacy path. The new hooks only examine .env.shared.yaml. Developers retaining a plaintext legacy file therefore lose the previous accidental-staging protection without gaining the new encryption check. The file's actual local contents and any disclosure are unproven.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The transport concern exposes, at most on the demonstrated path, the configured account's login/password and returned session/CSRF credentials to an observer of a successful plaintext exchange. It requires access to that connection; repository configuration alone does not establish public reachability, cross-tenant access, or production-wide exposure. Repository publication failures could expose any sensitive values subsequently placed in an affected shared file to its destination's readers.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained publication findings apply before remote acceptance: inspection errors can skip validation, unrelated remote history can be excluded, and root/merge file discovery is incomplete. A writer needs no vault decryption privilege to create plaintext or marker-bearing content. The current encrypted file is counterevidence against an existing plaintext disclosure, not proof that later publications are protected.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Key metadata identifies the encryption provider but does not establish which Azure identities may unwrap the file key. That authorization policy remains an explicit evidence gap. Likewise, the inspected publication controls are client-side; independent hosting-side enforcement was not established.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — After plaintext history is accepted, later pushes only inspect newly selected ranges rather than repairing that exposure. Rejection before acceptance preserves the remote state and permits reinspection on retry; encryption of a later version does not remove previously published plaintext history.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make TLS intent map directly to enforced encrypted transport. Preserve legacy plaintext-file ignore protection during migration, and use destination-aware, fail-closed publication validation that verifies encryption structure rather than marker presence. Treat local hooks as assistance rather than the sole remote-publication boundary.

Review comments at @.env.shared.yaml:
- Line 3: Update the SOPS handling for GRPC_LASS_TLS and GRPC_REFLECTION so the
Justfile exec-env commands work with the supported version range: either
document SOPS 3.11.0 or later as a setup requirement, or re-encrypt both values
as strings. Preserve the existing encrypted values and safeguards; do not
attempt to edit the ciphertext directly.
Review comments at @example.env:
- Around line 83-84: Rename the GPRC_LASS_HOST and GPRC_LASS_TLS entries to
GRPC_LASS_HOST and GRPC_LASS_TLS so they match the names read by Config,
preserving their existing values.
Review comments at @internal/leetcode-auth-service/src/config.rs:
- Line 65: Update configuration loading around GRPC_LASS_HOST to preserve
existing LASS_URL and LASS_TIMEOUT_SECONDS settings during migration, or
explicitly reject their presence with an actionable error; do not silently
ignore either setting and fall back to defaults.
- Line 73: Reverse the scheme selection in the URL construction using tls and
host so TLS-enabled LASS connections use HTTPS and non-TLS connections use HTTP;
leave the separate gRPC client TLS configuration out of this change.
Review comments at @internal/leetcode-auth-service/src/grpc/client/lass.rs:
- Line 34: Update the LASS channel setup using Endpoint and config.grpc_lass_url
to enable the required tonic TLS feature and configure HTTPS endpoints with
certificate validation before connecting. Preserve the existing behavior for
non-HTTPS endpoints, and establish the appropriate trusted certificate
configuration rather than merely selecting the HTTPS scheme.
Review comments at @Justfile:
- Line 125: Update the hook installation commands used by `just dev` and `just
auth` so they do not overwrite existing `pre-commit` or `pre-push` hooks.
Preserve or chain any existing hooks while installing the project hooks,
ensuring developer checks continue to run on later commits and pushes.
- Line 125: Update the pre-commit hook installation command to resolve the hook
destination with Git’s `rev-parse --git-path` rather than assuming `.git/hooks`
is a directory. Preserve the copy and executable-permission behavior so the
`just dev`, `just auth`, `just edit`, and `just encrypt` recipes can continue to
their main actions in worktrees.
- Line 128: Update the hook installation command in Justfile so pre-push uses a
dedicated hook that inspects commits in the outgoing ref range, rather than
copying the staged-change pre-commit script; preserve the existing pre-commit
hook behavior.
Review comments at @pre-commit:
- Line 9: Update the recovery command in the pre-commit message to use the
existing `just encrypt` recipe instead of the undefined `just e` command.
- Line 6: Replace the `grep` marker-only check in the pre-commit validation of
`FILE` with validation that confirms the staged YAML is a valid SOPS document
and every value required to be protected is encrypted. Use the repository’s
established SOPS validation and protection rules, and reject the commit if
either check fails.
- Around line 5-6: Update the pre-commit check using FILE to inspect the staged
index blob rather than the working-tree file; run the existing sops: validation
against the index content and preserve the rejection behavior when the staged
content is not encrypted.

- Line 103: Update the SOPS command invocations in both Justfile recipes so `{{
args }}` appears before `{{ file }}`; preserve the existing pre-script step and
other command behavior.
Review comments at @pre-push:
- Line 13: Update the COMMITS enumeration in the pre-push hook to check whether
git rev-list succeeds and reject the push if it fails. Preserve normal handling
of a successful enumeration that returns no commits.
- Line 17: Update the FILES collection in the pre-push hook so git diff-tree
inspects merge commits against their parents and includes root-commit changes,
ensuring .env.shared.yaml files introduced by either commit type are detected.
- Line 11: Update the COMMITS selection in the pre-push hook to exclude commits
reachable only from the destination remote, rather than using --not --remotes
across all remotes. Identify the destination remote from the hook’s inputs and
limit the exclusion refs accordingly, so commits tracked by other remotes remain
subject to inspection.
