Simplify sign-up and add first-login profile walkthrough - #163
Sign-up now asks only for name, email, introduction and how they found us. Submitting it creates the member and emails their first sign-in link automatically. The matching questions moved to a walkthrough on first login, so new members don't face one long form before they can get in.
A new "profile_setup_done" column on "members" decides whether the walkthrough shows. Sign-up saves the questions it doesn't ask as "". While setup isn't done, the walkthrough asks all four questions (match preference, industry, topics, LinkedIn), pre-filled with any saved answers, and saves each answer as soon as it's given. Finishing, skipping the last question, or "Exit setup" marks setup done, and the walkthrough doesn't come back. If a member leaves partway through, it returns next time with their saved answers filled in.
Database
"V0012" adds "profile_setup_done BOOLEAN NOT NULL": existing members are backfilled as "TRUE" (they signed up with the full form), new members start "FALSE"
"PATCH /members/{id}" accepts "profileSetupDone"
Local seed members are "TRUE"
Pages changed
navbar: removed the sign up button in favor of a single primary button for "Log in"
sign-up page: rebuilt as a short form; sends the first sign-in link automatically
login page: resend link on the "Check your email" screen; email carries over to/from sign-up
login magic link: now redirects to "/profile" instead of "/"
profile: first-login walkthrough until profile setup is done, with "Exit setup" behind a confirm modal; profile shown as read-only text with Edit; deactivate asks for an optional reason; restyled deactivate/reactivate modal; reworded its success toasts
admin member page: same read-only + Edit profile view
admin members table: shows empty answers as "—"; the deactivate/reactivate modal (shared with "/profile") is also restyled, and Reactivate uses the brand green
Testing
Manual smoke test on a fresh local DB ("docker compose … down -v", then "up --build -d"):
Seed members are "profile_setup_done = TRUE" and go straight to "/profile"
Signed up a new account: its row has "profile_setup_done = FALSE" and "" (not NULL) for every question sign-up skips
Signed in: the walkthrough shows all four questions, pre-filled with saved answers; Continue saves one answer; Finish, Skip on the last question, and "Exit setup" set "profile_setup_done = TRUE"
Edited profile values; checked the deactivate/reactivate and "Exit setup" modals
Backend: "./mvnw clean test" passes (159 tests, 0 failures); added "MemberServiceTest.updateMember_marksProfileSetupDone"; "MemberSqlRepoTest" checks the new column round-trips
Changed homepage with new nav bar (single Log-in button) and a sign up CTA line at the end of the bullet list

Summary
New Features
Sign-up now requests a sign-in link automatically and shows email delivery and retry status. Email addresses can carry between sign-up and login.
New members can complete a guided profile setup, answering questions one at a time or skipping ahead.
Profiles now have separate details and matching sections, with an Edit, Cancel, and Save flow. Email and referral source are read-only.
Successful sign-in links open the profile page. Signed-out visitors see a sign-up prompt on the home page and a Log in button in the navigation.
Bug Fixes
Empty member details display consistently in the members table. Deactivating a profile clarifies that matching stops while profile editing remains available.
This repository does not receive automatic reviews because it has fewer than 10 stars.

Walkthrough
The PR updates sign-up and login flows, adds profile setup tracking and a first-login walkthrough, and changes profile display, editing, and storage. It also updates related tests, mocks, and documentation.
Sign-up now creates an account and requests a sign-in link. Login accepts email handoff and supports link resends. Verification now navigates to /profile. Home and navbar content reflects the sign-up and login states.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review e8449
Members may submit blank required fields after entering whitespace, and returning members must revisit answered setup questions. These bounded issues warrant owner follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to e8449
The new setup-completion flag is writable through a profile endpoint that does not enforce member ownership. Someone who knows a member ID can dismiss or reopen that member’s walkthrough. The demonstrated impact is limited to onboarding state; the flag does not grant sign-in or administrator privileges.
Retained concerns
Low · security · observed: The PR adds profileSetupDone to the existing publicly permitted PATCH /api/members/{id} contract. The controller accepts the supplied UUID without an authenticated principal, and the service applies either boolean value directly. A caller who knows another member’s UUID and satisfies ordinary CSRF requirements can therefore suppress or reopen that member’s walkthrough. The general profile-update ownership gap predates this PR; the newly exposed lifecycle state is the PR-specific impact.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated new attacker-controlled scope is the onboarding flag of each member whose UUID is known. The inspected chain does not establish UUID enumeration, credential theft, or new administrator authority. Administrative listing remains role-protected, and attempted email changes are rejected.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — A caller-controlled path UUID reaches member lookup, and a caller-controlled profileSetupDone value reaches persistence without an ownership comparison. The profile page consumes that persisted value on initialization. This extends the pre-existing public-write boundary to the newly introduced lifecycle state.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Member PATCH retains CSRF protection, but its authorization rule permits requests without authentication. CSRF therefore does not establish which member a direct API caller may modify. By contrast, self-status mutation explicitly uses the authenticated principal’s member ID, providing an existing ownership-bound pattern.
observed — Automatic post-signup link delivery reuses the existing request-link endpoint. Its unchanged service applies rate limiting before member lookup, issues an expiring token, and verifies a consumed token before the controller creates a session. Account creation alone does not invoke session creation.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — If member creation succeeds but requesting the first link fails, the page acknowledges the existing account and offers the normal login path. This keeps email-delivery failure separate from account creation and does not introduce a fallback that bypasses token verification.

Explanation
The title "Simplify sign-up and add first-login profile walkthrough" matches the main changes in the changeset. The sign-up form was reduced to name, email, introduction, and referral source, with automatic first sign-in link delivery. A four-question profile walkthrough was added for first login, backed by the new profile_setup_done column and the walkthrough components. The title is concise and specific, and it does not use vague terms.

Preserve unanswered fields when an admin edits a partial profile.
Self-service editing is blocked until the walkthrough finishes, but an admin can edit /admin/members/:id at any time. The edit form converts every NULL field to "" and PATCHes all fields. The backend preserves present empty strings, so the next profile visit no longer sees those questions as unanswered.
Omit only fields that were originally NULL and remain empty. Continue sending fields that were already "", because those represent intentional skips.

Trim whitespace-only values before field validation.
Mantine runs validate on the raw values. memberProfileSchema uses only min(1) for firstName, lastName, and introduction, so a whitespace-only value passes validation. transformValues then trims it to "" at submit. The API rejects the empty string, so the member sees a server error alert instead of an inline field error.
Trim the values before the schema runs. transformValues still trims on submit:

Validate trimmed values, not raw values.
Mantine runs validate on the raw form values. It applies transformValues only to the values passed to the submit handler. A whitespace-only firstName, lastName, or introduction passes min(1) validation. trimValues then turns it into "" before the PATCH.
The request then sends an empty required field. Either the backend rejects it and the user sees only the generic "Couldn't save" alert, or the empty value is stored.
Validate the same trimmed values that the submit handler sends.

User data columns no longer hold null. empty values have been reverted to being assigned empty strings
Backend changes:
- V0012 adds profile_setup_done: existing members are TRUE, new members start FALSE; seed members are TRUE
- PATCH /members/{id} accepts profileSetupDone
Frontend changes:
- Sign up form sends empty strings to db
- Onboardnig UI tweaks
- Tweaks to confirmation modals and toast notifcations
- Tweaks to button colors to be consistent
i also don't see a panel for editing email in the profile edit view. we're going to allow for that eventually, so that should be there but greyed out (i believe this was the case before)
Also, if i'm getting this right, there's only a "login" button if logged out?
what's the point of taking away the signup button? we can still direct the user to sign up if they attempt to login and can't. I feel like it's just taking away a bit of functionality
- Sign-up and profile edit now validate the trimmed values they send, so
whitespace-only required fields are rejected
- Profile walkthrough starts at the first unanswered question
