docs: make the contribution path and directory guides match the source - #4804
Conversation
Add a first contribution that can be checked without a cluster or credentials, rewrite the directory overviews from the kustomizations, mark FleetDM as retained and correct its replica description, correct the Tetragon enforcement and log-export statements, and index the scripts by whether they are safe to run locally. Priority: ⬇️ Low Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The PR remains mergeable with bounded follow-up, but readers could be misled about local file writes, runnable disaster-recovery procedures, deployed apps, and live policy status. Pre-merge checks ·

Review comments at @CONTRIBUTING.md:
- Around line 49-50: Update the contribution guidance around the statement that
commands write only temporary build files: clarify that checks may populate the
persistent Go module cache, while generated build artifacts are temporary.

- Around line 24-25: Update the statement in the DR documentation to identify
CNPG and OpenBao as operator documents requiring production access, while
clarifying that SPIRE is an unimplemented design rather than a runnable operator
runbook.
Review comments at @k8s/bases/apps/README.md:
- Line 8: Update the sentence in the apps base README to say that an unlisted
folder is not included by this base, rather than making a claim about whether it
is deployed.
Review comments at @k8s/bases/infrastructure/controllers/tetragon/README.md:
- Line 7: Update the enforcement statement in the README to say that no workload
manifest in the repository opts into the policy, and clarify that live cluster
enforcement state is not established by repository manifests.

28-29: 🎯 Functional CorrectnessThe load-balancer concern is refuted. The production patch targets

I also ran the negative case: a bookmark with an http:// link makes the first check exit 1 and name the entry. The example file was restored afterwards.
Checked against the source. The same reader compared each changed statement with the manifests and scripts and resolved all 83 relative links and anchors. It found six inaccuracies in the first version (a check listed as covering a file it never reads, two missing tool prerequisites, apps marked active that cannot run locally, and three over-general sentences). All six are corrected at this head, together with CodeRabbit's four findings and Codex's one. The later commits change wording only; the commands above are unchanged in them.
Not exercised. Forking and opening a pull request; the statement that a first run may download Go modules (the module cache was already populated); and every operator procedure the guides describe (disaster-recovery runbooks, the FleetDM secret rotation, the standby replacement, the emergency-access check). Those need production access and were read, not run. The FleetDM page describes configuration that is not deployed, so nothing in it could be observed running.
Why
A first-time contributor had no worked example of a change they could check on their own machine, and several directory guides no longer matched what the platform runs. One described a disabled device-management app as running with three database copies, and another said runtime enforcement was off although an opt-in enforcement policy exists.
What
The contribution guide gains a small first change with the exact checks to run, none of which needs a cluster or a credential. The directory guides now say what each folder holds and which apps are active or only retained, and the scripts guide separates checks that are safe to run locally from operator procedures that are not. Documentation only; nothing deployed changes.
