Before: \targetfn printed f, and \noise / \vnoise / \cdev printed ε (or the undertilde ε), each defined separately from the deviation macros.

After (Ezra, 2026-10-16):

  • \targetfn (and so \targetfnf, \htargetfn, \etargetfn, \targeterr) prints μ.
  • New \popdev prints ν: the deviation of a variable from its population mean. New one-argument \popdevf{z} prints ν with the variable as subscript (deviation of z from its population mean).
  • \noise, \vnoise and \cdev are aliases of \popdev, since the noise is defined as the deviation of the outcome from its mean given the input.
  • New two-argument \deviationf{z}{r} prints δ_r(z) for the deviation of z from any reference value r; the existing zero-argument \deviation (δ) is unchanged.
  • \lsresid / \vlsresid (least-squares residuals) still print ε.

How: macros.qmd and interpretations.tsv; no macro names removed. Open macros PRs #127, #146 and #157 do not touch these names.

Collisions, kept as asked: μ also prints for the scalar population mean (\mean, \popmean) and a few others, but \targetfnf{x} carries an argument. ν also prints for \df (degrees of freedom), \shrinkage, \svfrac, \measureb and \nullity, so a derivation that uses \noise with \df should rename one.

Review of head 99ca718 by a separate Claude agent (only Claude reviewed this PR; macros has no review job): CLEAN.

  • \popdev is defined after \deviation and before \popdevf; \deviationf uses \paren (defined at the top); \noise, \vnoise and \cdev resolve at use time. \vnoise uses the same \vec pattern as the existing \deviationv.
  • Every new or changed macro has an accurate interpretations.tsv row; \lsresid and \vlsresid still print ε, so no row became false.
  • Nothing in the README, docs or _tests depended on \noise, \cdev or \targetfn printing ε or f.
  • popdev, popdevf and deviationf are new names.
  • Not rendered in MathJax or LaTeX by the reviewer; the lds preview of lds#1074 renders it.
  • Non-blocking: \df (degrees of freedom) also prints ν, and \targetfn shares μ with \mean and \measure; both are stated in the PR description.
