🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Set cmd.WaitDelay so a login profile cannot hang the PATH probe.
exec.CommandContext kills only the shell when the 2-second timeout expires. cmd.Output() then waits until every holder of the stdout pipe closes it. A profile can start a background process that inherits stdout, for example an agent or a version manager daemon. In that case Output() blocks after the kill. loginPath holds loginPathMu during this wait, and Configure calls it through Environ. A reload or a startup can then stall with no bound.
Go 1.20 and later provide cmd.WaitDelay, and the module declares Go 1.26. With WaitDelay set, Output() closes the pipes and returns after the delay.

Bound the stdin write by the call deadline.
p.stdin.Write(line) blocks until the child reads, and it ignores ctx. The OS pipe buffer is small: about 64 KiB on Linux and 16–64 KiB on macOS. LLM request bodies often exceed that size.
Trigger: a script sends its handshake and then stops reading stdin. Examples are a hung module-level loop, or a shell script that runs exec sleep after the handshake, as TestOnRequest_Timeout does with a 1-byte body. The script then receives a request body larger than the pipe buffer.
Consequences:
Callnever returns, so the request hangs indefinitely.CallTimeouthas no effect.w.semstays held. Every later call waits out its own deadline and then fails with "busy".Stop()andHandshake()acquiresemwithout a deadline, so they block forever. The pool'sgo e.w.Stop()leaks, and the child is never killed.Configure→w.Start(context.Background())can also block for the same reason.
readLine already honours ctx, and fail() already kills the process. If you move the write into a goroutine, the existing kill path closes stdin and unblocks that goroutine.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Seed the script fingerprint from the scripts loaded at startup.
If a script changes after the initial pipeline build but before New computes this hash, lastHash describes the new file while the active pipeline contains the old script. The watcher has not started, so it cannot observe that edit; later unchanged-file events also fail the hash check. Capture the loaded script revision and check for changes after the watches are installed. Based on learnings, a watcher baseline must use the exact content loaded at startup, not a later filesystem read.

Distinguish buffered JSON from an already delivered stream.
A plain @on.response hook can deny a JSON response before delivery, as test_response_deny demonstrates. Only an already relayed stream makes the deny late. Correct this distinction here and in the catalog. Otherwise, users may enable rewrite=True just to block JSON responses and unnecessarily buffer their streams.

Limit the credential-header guarantee to the headers removed.
The design lists specific headers that Cortex removes. A different credential header, such as X-Auth-Token, can remain visible to a script. Replace “Credentials … are never included” with the exact exclusion list and warn users not to print other sensitive headers.

Specify the request shape for response hooks.
This paragraph says a message carries a request body and that a response message also carries a response. The response-message contract omits the request body. State that distinction so authors of non-SDK response hooks do not depend on a field they will not receive.

core/plugins/script/sdk/cortex.py is embedded in the binary. The plugin
writes it to ~/.cortex/plugins/_sdk and puts that on each worker's
PYTHONPATH, so `from cortex import on, run` works with nothing to install. A
Cortex upgrade upgrades it too.
A script is decorators and one call:
@on.request
def mask(flow):
flow.replace_text(SECRETS, "[secret]")
run() # shadow; run(enforce=True) applies
flow exposes:
- the request and the parsers' fields;
- texts and latest_text, which read Anthropic and OpenAI chat bodies;
- replace_text, set_body, set_header, remove_header, deny and record.
print() inside a hook lands on the request's row, and an exception is
reported there without ending the script. It runs on Python 3.9, the macOS
system interpreter, with only the standard library.
`script.py --replay <session-id>` runs the request hooks over a session
Cortex recorded and reports what they would change or deny. It never goes
through the proxy. Replayed over two live laptop sessions (305 and 961
requests), a secrets mask found the test key in the one that had it and
changed nothing in the other.
docs/script-plugin.md is the user guide, linked from the docs index and the
catalog. tests/test_script_sdk.py runs in the existing pytest job. A Go test
drives a real Python script through the host when python3 is present.

Completes the script-plugin requirement: a script reads and writes responses as well as requests. Host. The plugin is now a StreamingResponder, so the pipeline sends it every response through OnResponseFrame. Response hooks run in reverse file order, as the pipeline's own response pass does. - A response not yet delivered at its last frame (JSON, or SSE held back for a writer) reaches the hook whole, and its deny and body edit apply. - A response relayed as it arrived reaches the hook afterwards, as its frames, up to 10MiB copied. An edit there is refused and a deny is recorded late. - A script that declares rewrite_response narrows the slot to WritesResponseBody, so SSE takes the buffered path and its edits apply. Read-only response hooks cost no streaming. SDK. @on.response reads and @on.response(rewrite=True) may change and block. flow.completion joins the model's text from JSON or SSE, Anthropic or OpenAI chat. replace_text on a response joins each block's deltas before matching, so a pattern split across two chunks still matches, and sends the block back as one delta. Verified on a scratch proxy with a 2.1s streamed upstream: - A reader left streaming intact: first delta at 0.61s. It saw the whole completion, recorded late. - A rewriter, swapped in live, held the stream back (first byte at 2.13s). - The client received "connect to [internal-host] now" across what had been two deltas, with event: lines intact. - The parser's recorded completion is the upstream's text, the same record-what-was-exchanged boundary as on requests. The doc says so. Assisted-By: Claude (Anthropic AI) <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Hai Huang <[email protected]>

Run the remaining hooks after a late denial.
If a response hook denies an already-delivered stream, responseHooks returns before earlier hooks run. Those hooks never observe or record that response, although the denial cannot stop delivery. Continue the loop after recording a late denial; retain the existing stop behavior for buffered responses.

Separate the requirements for denial and rewriting.
A response hook can deny a buffered response without declaring rewrite_response, as TestResponse_DenyBlocksABufferedResponseOnly demonstrates. The current wording says the declaration is required to block any response. State that rewrite_response permits body edits and buffers streamed responses so a denial can take effect before delivery.

Update the response-hook description near the response reader and rewriter text
to distinguish denial from rewriting: do not imply that blocking requires

Reviewed the four commits after #1471 (a947d721..a1783c28). One must-fix: response hooks share the listener's 10s finalization deadline with the parsers after them, so slow scripts can turn a complete buffered response into a 499 and drop the cost settle. Two suggestions and a nit are inline; none are on the PR's deferred list.

must-fix: slow response scripts use up the time the parsers need to settle.
The listener gives the whole final response dispatch one shared deadline: httpx.TeardownContext, 10s, used for the single RunResponseFrame(..., last=true) call on the buffered path, and for the final one on the streamed path. The script slot is the last outbound plugin, so it runs first on the reverse response pass. Each w.Call can take up to timeout waiting for the worker's lock and up to timeout again for the reply. timeout defaults to 2s and has no maximum.
Once the deadline is gone, RunResponseFrame refuses every plugin after the slot with Deny("pipeline.cancelled"):
- Buffered path (
forwardproxy/server.go~688): inference-parser never settles, andrejectResponsesends the agent a 499 instead of a response that arrived complete. - Streamed path: the stream is already delivered, but the completion and the charge are dropped.
I reproduced this with a throwaway test: pipeline.New([parser-stub, slot]), one response script that never answers, timeout: 2s, and a scaled-down 1s deadline. The result was Reject pipeline.cancelled with the stub's last=true never called.
The scripts' own failures are fail-open by design, but this one closes on the agent and loses the charge. One possible fix: stop calling scripts once ctx's remaining deadline drops below a reserve for the plugins after the slot, and record the skipped scripts as script_error. Another: cap the slot's total response-hook time at a fixed fraction of TeardownTimeout.

suggestion: this drops request.body, but request.inference still comes along. requestMessage copies pctx.Extensions.Inference whole, so messages, toolResults and the full tools manifest are all there, and responseHooks re-encodes them after every applied edit. On a long conversation that is the same content the PR says it removes, just parsed instead of raw, so the message isn't much smaller.
Either drop those fields from the response message (a response hook mostly needs model; the SDK could document flow.inference as request-hook-only), or tone down the "Smaller messages" claim in the PR body and docs.

suggestion: WithinCeiling should flag a narrowed response-only reader, the same way it flags "ReadsBody without a body writer" a few lines below.
A local slot whose scripts only read responses narrows to {WritesRequestBody, ReadsResponseBody}. As of this PR, validateCapabilities refuses that set after a response mutator. The script ceiling (ReadsBody + WritesRequestBody + WritesResponseBody) is accepted in the same position, because it writes responses itself. So the catalog describes a plugin that fits chains the configured instance is refused from, and BuildWithDeps logs no WARN, because this check returns "". TestWithinCeiling_ResponseReader's "under a response-writer ceiling" case asserts exactly this. A matching case would be roughly c.ReadsResponseBody && !c.WritesResponseBody && ceiling.WritesResponseBody.
This is the detection side of the "ReadsResponseBody is not floored" item already on your deferred list. That item is about the refusal; this is about saying nothing when it can happen.

nit: needs two blank lines before def sse (E302). tests/ is excluded from the ruff hook, so nothing catches it.
Fixes review: slow response scripts spent the listener's shared 10s finalization deadline, so the parsers after the slot were refused with pipeline.cancelled — a 499 for a complete buffered response, and no settle (esnible). Re-reviewed e80d361. It resolves the must-fix: each response-hook call is now capped at the dispatch deadline minus a 1s reserve, and that cap also limits the wait for the worker's lock. Once only the reserve is left, the remaining scripts are skipped as script_error, so the parsers after the slot still get their last frame and settle. The new test reproduces the original failure. My earlier suggestions and nit are on the deferred list.

Problem
Script plugins must read and write responses as well as requests, as a Go plugin can. Two things make responses harder:
Change
Host. The plugin is now a
StreamingResponder, so the pipeline sends it every response throughOnResponseFrame. Response hooks run in reverse file order, as the pipeline's own response pass does.denyand body edits applyrewrite_responsenarrows the slot toWritesResponseBody(Feat: Let a configured plugin narrow its capabilities #1468). SSE then takes the buffered path, so its edits always apply. Read-only response hooks cost no streaming.SDK.
@on.responsereads;@on.response(rewrite=True)may change and block.flow.completionjoins the model's text from JSON or SSE, Anthropic or OpenAI chat.replace_texton a response joins each block's deltas before matching, so a pattern split across two chunks still matches. It sends the block back as one delta and keepsevent:lines.data:.Series

On the buffered-SSE path the parser records the upstream's text, not the script's rewrite. It is the same boundary as on requests: what Cortex records is what was exchanged with the upstream.
