Watch script folders only on a local install.
scriptFolders(cfg) is not gated by localInstall. A shared deployment can have a config that names script. The plugin then loads nothing there. However, reloader.Start still runs MkdirAll on ~/.cortex/plugins inside the container. Any executable placed there also changes the fingerprint. The result is reloads that serve no purpose, and an active_config_sha256 that is not the config's own sha256. Pass no folders when the process is not a local install.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Bound the login-shell probe with WaitDelay so Output cannot block past the timeout.
exec.CommandContext kills only the shell process when loginPathTimeout expires. cmd.Output() copies stdout through a pipe goroutine. Wait returns only after that pipe reaches EOF. A login profile can start a background process that inherits stdout, such as an agent or daemon. In that case Output blocks until that process exits, which can take indefinitely.
loginPath holds loginPathMu during the probe. Configure calls Environ during every pipeline build. A blocked probe therefore stops the initial pipeline build, and the proxy does not start. Later reloads also block on the mutex.
Set cmd.WaitDelay so that the pipes are closed shortly after the kill.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
A reused worker keeps the CallTimeout of the build that created it.
The pool key is {path, hash}. When an entry exists, Acquire returns the existing worker and discards cfg. Assume a user changes timeout from 2s to 10s in the YAML. The reload succeeds, and /config shows the new value. However, every unchanged script keeps the old CallTimeout until its file changes or its process exits. The same thing happens when two slots share a file with different timeouts.
Either include CallTimeout in key, or update the timeout of the existing worker on Acquire.

Adds core/plugins/script, registered as `script`. One entry is one slot: the executable files directly in a folder (default ~/.cortex/plugins), run in file-name order as pipeline steps. Each file is a long-lived worker that gets one JSON line per request. That line carries the method, host, path, headers without credentials, body, and the parsers' fields, in the session API's own shape. The worker may change headers or the body, or deny the request. The user experience is one file and no YAML: - On a local install the preset appends a `script` entry to the outbound chain unless the user listed one. - The reloader watches the slot folders, so adding, editing or removing a script reloads exactly as a config edit does. - The worker pool keeps an unchanged script's process, and its state, across that reload. - A script runs in shadow mode until its handshake says enforce. - A failing script lets the request through, with the error on its row, unless the slot is fail_closed. - Anything the script prints lands on its timeline row. The instance narrows its capabilities to what its scripts need, so a slot of request scripts never costs a streamed response its streaming. An empty slot declares nothing. Laptop only: plugins.Deps gains LocalInstall, set only by cmd/cortex. Without it the plugin loads nothing, so a sidecar config naming `script` cannot run commands. It ships in the local and full profiles. Verified on a scratch proxy with bash scripts: - header edit and deny (403, attributed to the file); - a second file added live, then removed by renaming it to _name; - the first worker kept its PID across the reload and its drain; - a kill -9 of the proxy took the worker with it. Fixes review: under on_error: observe, a script's deny was recorded as a non-shadow deny under the file's name, and the pipeline added a synthesized row, so the outcome reported a denial for a forwarded request. Clean, well-scoped part 3 of 5. The capability design is the strongest part: declaring the slot a request writer wherever scripts run — empty or not — so the folder's contents cannot decide whether the proxy starts, and keeping response rewriting narrowed to the loaded handshakes so request-only slots don't cost streamed responses their streaming. TestCapabilities_AnEmptyLocalSlotBeforeABodyReaderIsRefused pins exactly the crash-loop this avoids. The LocalInstall gate (false as the safe zero value, injected explicitly rather than relying on a plugin's own default) is the right shape for a feature that runs the user's programs.
Three findings below, one must-fix. They are in the review body rather than inline because this review was submitted through a credential broker whose review op carries no inline-comment field — the anchoring is the only thing lost, the detail is intact.
I checked the "Deferred from review" list and have not re-raised anything on it. Finding 1 overlaps a CodeRabbit comment that is already on that list — I am raising it anyway because it is a security-boundary partial write, not a style issue: secretHeaders is the mechanism keeping credentials out of a script's reach, and a half-applied edit through it is the one failure mode worth fixing before merge rather than after. Findings 2 and 3 are close relatives of deferred items; treat them as "consider folding into the same fix" rather than new work.
1. must-fix — core/plugins/script/message.go:149 (applyHeaders)
applyHeaders validates and mutates in the same pass, so the edit is not atomic.
A script can return one permitted header and one forbidden one. Map iteration order is random, so when the permitted key comes first, h.Set(k, v) has already landed by the time the forbidden key returns the error. With the default fail_closed: false, failed returns without rejecting, OnRequest continues, and Pipeline.Run forwards the same pctx because it only stops on Reject — so the upstream request carries a partial edit from a script edit that was supposed to have failed.
This is the credential boundary rather than a style issue: secretHeaders is what keeps a script from reading or setting a credential, and a half-applied edit through that check is worth closing before merge.
Validating every key before touching h fixes it:
func applyHeaders(h http.Header, e *edits) error {
for k := range e.SetHeaders {
if secretHeaders[strings.ToLower(k)] {
return fmt.Errorf("may not set %s", k)
}
}
for k, v := range e.SetHeaders {
h.Set(k, v)
}
for _, k := range e.RemoveHeaders {
h.Del(k)
}
return nil
}Worth noting the comment on edit() in plugin.go — "A body is written last, so a refused header leaves nothing half-applied" — is accurate about the body ordering but reads as a claim about the headers too, which is not true today. Fixing this makes the comment true as written.
2. suggestion — core/plugins/script/message.go:149 (applyHeaders)
Header names and values from a script are not validated.
A script is the user's own code, but it is also the least-reviewed code in the pipeline, and a stray \r\n in either a name or a value makes net/http refuse the outbound request. The result is a 502 for the agent even though the slot is nominally fail-open — the one outcome the fail-open design is there to prevent.
Since the fix for finding 1 already introduces a validate-everything-first pass, this fits naturally in the same loop:
if !httpguts.ValidHeaderFieldName(k) {
return fmt.Errorf("invalid header name %q", k)
}
if !httpguts.ValidHeaderFieldValue(v) {
return fmt.Errorf("invalid value for header %s", k)
}(golang.org/x/net/http/httpguts, already an indirect dependency via x/net.)
This is on your deferred list, so folding it into the must-fix above rather than treating it as separate work seems right.
3. suggestion — core/plugins/script/plugin.go:255 (OnRequest)
edited means "the body write landed", but the rebuild wants "anything reached the request".
s.edit returns applied from pctx.SetBody(body) when the reply carries a body. Under on_error: observe the pipeline mutes body writes but still applies header writes (per pipeline.PolicyAt, and pinned by TestRun_ObservePolicyAppliesHeadersOnly). So a reply that sets a header and replaces the body under that policy gets the header applied and applied == false — msg is not rebuilt, and the next script in the slot sees the pre-edit headers while the live request has the post-edit ones.
Narrow case, and it is adjacent to the observe-policy item already on your deferred list, so it may well belong in that same fix. Flagging it because the divergence is between what a script is told and what is actually on the wire, which is the kind of thing that is hard to debug from a timeline row.
Threading a separate "header edit applied" result out of edit — or returning applied || headersApplied for the rebuild decision specifically — would keep each script's view matching the request it is being asked about.
One note on CodeRabbit's pool-timeout comment: it is already addressed — Pool.Acquire returns e.c.with(cfg.CallTimeout), so each build carries its own timeout off a shared child. No action needed there.

The must-fix from my earlier review is properly closed: applyHeaders validates the whole map — secret names, httpguts name and value validity — before any Set lands, with tests pinning both the atomicity (over 100 random map orders) and the CR/LF refusals. Finding 2 was folded into the same loop rather than left on the deferred list; finding 3 (the observe-policy rebuild) is now on the deferred list, which is the right disposition for it.
On @evaline-ju's point I concur, with one addition: removal is not a credential leak — flatten keeps the secret headers from the script in the first place, and removal can do no more than a deny, which any enforcing script already may. So it is a design decision rather than a boundary hole, but it deserves an explicit answer before #1471's SDK documents header behavior: either refuse removal of secretHeaders too (one more loop over RemoveHeaders), or document that a script may drop a credential header and thereby 401 its own request.
One correction to the deferred list, so it doesn't get "fixed" redundantly: the timeout item reads stale. Pool.Acquire hands each build e.c.with(cfg.CallTimeout), and TestPool_AReusedWorkerTakesTheNewCallTimeout (from #1469) pins that a reused worker takes the acquiring build's timeout — a reload that changes only timeout applies the new value to the new pipeline immediately, not "until the script changes". The old pipeline keeping its old timeout until it drains is the per-build behavior #1469 intended.
Independently verified beyond the fix: the capability floor (a local slot is a request writer wherever scripts run, so an empty folder cannot decide whether the proxy starts), the LocalInstall gate (zero value false, only cmd/cortex sets it), SlotDir's escape rejection, symlink-skipping in scan, and the reloader's extra-watch hash (the plain config sha256 when no scripts exist, so /reload/status keeps its meaning). The refused-build sweep and edit-keeps-old-worker paths line up with the pool contract from #1469 and are pinned by tests.

Headers come without credentials:authorization,x-api-keyand cookies are removed, and a script may not set them. It may set or remove other headers, replace the body, or deny the request. A deny status outside 4xx/5xx falls back to the code's default.Capabilities follow the slot, not its folder, using the narrowing from #1468. Wherever scripts run the slot is a request writer, empty or not, so what the folder holds cannot decide whether the proxy starts: a slot listed before a body reader is refused at build time, not by the first script dropped into it. An empty slot still starts no workers and writes nothing to disk. Response rewriting is the one capability that follows the loaded scripts, so streamed responses keep streaming unless a script asks to rewrite them.

timeoutis fixed into the pooled worker, so a reload that changes onlytimeoutkeeps the old value until the script changes.WaitDelay, so a profile that backgrounds a child holding stdout can hold Configure past the 2s budget.invocation.action: denyand nodenyblock is recorded as a deny row on a request that went through.secretHeadersis shorter than the credential listcpex/headers.gostrips; the two should share one list._-prefixed helper in a slot folder neither reloads nor restarts the scripts that import it.scriptFoldersis not gated onlocalInstall, so a sidecar config namingscripthas the reloader create and watch$HOME/.cortex/plugins.SlotDirruns before the local-install check, so a sidecar without$HOMEfails the build instead of loading nothing.~/.cortex/pluginson every local install.docs/architecture.md,core/plugins/README.mdandCLAUDE.md.pipeline.Newno longer checks where it sits relative to a response mutator. Once Feat: Let script plugins read and rewrite responses #1472 runs response hooks, such a slot placed aftercpexorsparcreads the upstream's bytes, not what the client receives.cmd.Waitruns concurrently with the stderr reader and closes the pipe, so the tail of a crashing script's traceback can be lost.applyHeaderssets headers while iterating, so a refused credential header can leave an edit half-applied before the request fails open.listenerPlan.requestMessagesendsinference.toolResults, which that field's comment keeps from plugins without an explicit opt-in.on_error: observea header edit applies but its row is marked Shadow, and the next script's message is not rebuilt.$SHELL -l -cfails on tcsh, so the PATH probe falls back to launchd's PATH silently.Fingerprintrepeats its WARNs on every event.core/plugins/registry.go's catalog doc still saysCapabilities()is static, contradicting Feat: Let a configured plugin narrow its capabilities #1468's narrowing contract (outside this PR's diff).scripts/profile-tags/profiles_test.goanddocs/plugin-catalog.mdsay "the preset appends" the script entry; it iscmd/cortex'saddScriptSlot.readCuttrims one trailing \r wherereadLineusesTrimRight("\r\n")— two line-readers in one file with different CRLF policies.Assisted-By: Claude (Anthropic AI) [email protected]
