[8/17] DLA MatMul and Gemm convolution conversion - #2960
Availability on main: Parts 3?15 add internal implementation pieces. The public FP32 DLA API and make-dla-compatible CLI become available only after Part 16 (#2968) and its dependencies merge. Optional FP16 strong typing becomes available after Part 17 (#2969) merges.
Type of change: new feature
Convert eligible fixed-weight MatMul and Gemm nodes into Transpose/Conv/Transpose subgraphs in the internal DLA sequence. Part 8/17 depends on part 7; merge the series from the bottom upward. Public registration follows in part 16.
Rank adapters keep the converted graph valid at this stage, including deferred mode. Their shape metadata lets later rank passes use the original shape snapshot. Symbolic and unsupported Conv activation layouts retain MatMul semantics. Fallback promotion requires known operand and result ranks, and private weight annotations track in-place layout changes. Ineligible Gemm remains two-dimensional; fallback matrix MatMul retains its original output rank. Vector promotion is refused before mutation in standalone mode and left unchanged in deferred mode. Rank adapters require opset 13 or newer, and new initializer inputs are registered for legacy IR models.
Conv layouts preserve shared, public and captured weight views, runtime initializer overrides, supported DQ domains and per-axis quantization. Generated names use the existing allocator. Unsupported integer, blocked-quantization and model-local operation paths retain MatMul semantics. Metadata-only weight reshapes avoid decoding and copying payloads.
Gemm conversion accepts only unit alpha/beta and an absent bias or an exact output-channel vector. Valid broadcasting forms, symbolic bias sizes and unsupported attributes remain native. Fixed activations without input/value metadata take the existing fallback route.
The fixture metadata test skips locally when optional ORT symbolic-inference tools are absent; other matrix tests still run.
This slice extends the internal sequence; the public entry point follows in part 16.
Consolidated duplicate MatMul activation-rank, Gemm transpose, and dynamic-weight conversion tests into parametrized cases without reducing case coverage. All 90 focused cases pass.
Testing
The transformations have been thoroughly tested on 22 models.
Windows CPU: 2049 passed in 360.69 seconds across the complete restacked graph-surgery and compatibility suite with Python 3.11.18, ONNX 1.23.2 and ONNX Runtime 1.22.0. The public DLA API uses direct ONNX saving; existing initializer conversion and unrelated surgeries are preserved. Commits are signed and all commit hooks pass with the equivalent Linux mypy platform setting. GPU execution, DLA compilation and the complete Linux suite were not run locally.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.

Walkthrough
The change adds an ONNX transform that converts eligible MatMul and Gemm nodes to Conv subgraphs. It also applies rank handling to some ineligible MatMul nodes and registers the transform in the DLA compatibility pipeline.

Eligibility and weight handling modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/dla_matmul_to_transpose_conv_transpose.py, tests/unit/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/test_dla_matmul_to_transpose_conv_transpose.py
The transform classifies eligible nodes and fallback candidates. It prepares eligible weights for Conv, including supported dequantized weights. Tests cover eligibility rules, weight conversion, and quantized-weight cases.
Convolution rewrite and rank fallback modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/dla_matmul_to_transpose_conv_transpose.py, tests/unit/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/test_dla_matmul_to_transpose_conv_transpose.py
Eligible MatMul and Gemm nodes become Conv subgraphs. Some ineligible MatMul nodes receive rank handling based on the deferred-conversion setting. The transform updates value-info and legacy initializer inputs. Tests cover graph structure, fallback behavior, output parity, and compatibility cases.
DLA pipeline integration and validation modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/make_dla_compatible.py, tests/unit/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/test_dla_matmul_to_transpose_conv_transpose.py
The pipeline invokes the transform with deferred rank conversion before shape inference. Tests check conversion and fallback behavior, model validity, and output parity.
Ineligible Gemm nodes retain their two-dimensional inputs. No actionable merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.

The title "[8/17] DLA MatMul and Gemm convolution conversion" matches the main change. The PR adds a graph-surgery transform that converts eligible MatMul and Gemm nodes into Transpose/Conv/Transpose subgraphs for DLA. Move the unjustified in-function imports to module scope or add a reason comment.
The tests/**/*.py instructions allow in-function imports only for circular-import or optional-dependency reasons, and each such import needs a comment that names the reason. Three imports in this file lack one.
Line 83, import onnxruntime as ort in _run_ort: line 56 already guards onnxruntime with pytest.importorskip. A module-scope import after that guard is safe. The type: ignore comment does not state a runtime reason.
Line 114, import contextlib in _save_test_pair: this is a standard-library module and needs no deferred import.
Lines 127-129, SymbolicShapeInference: this import sits inside the try block that catches Exception, so a missing onnxruntime.tools module falls back to the model without symbolic shape inference. A module-scope import would instead fail test collection. Keep this import local and name the reason.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
The rank fallback promotes Gemm inputs to 4-D. Gemm accepts only 2-D A/B.
ineligible_nodes includes Gemm nodes. A Gemm is ineligible when its weight is dynamic, for example a graph input or a node output. The fallback then Unsqueezes both inputs to 4-D (standalone mode) or the graph-input weight (deferred mode, Lines 223/233). The ONNX Gemm spec requires rank-2 A and B, so the rewritten node is invalid. ORT session creation and shape inference fail.
The fallback also ignores transA/transB. Padding with leading 1-dims is only valid for MatMul's batched broadcasting semantics.
Restrict the fallback to MatMul. Alternatively, lower Gemm to MatMul plus Add before promotion.

Addressed in b0c9eae. Ineligible Gemm nodes now remain unchanged rather than entering MatMul rank promotion. Eight checked cases cover both deferred settings and all transA/transB combinations with dynamic weights; serialization stays unchanged and ORT outputs match. All eight fail against the preceding source.
@mgohil-png Confirmed by source inspection at b0c9eae0bb: active_fallback includes only MatMul, so ineligible Gemm nodes bypass rank promotion in both modes.
The regression test covers all eight combinations and checks model validity, unchanged serialization, and ORT output parity. I did not run the tests.
This addresses the finding. Per AGENTS.md, I leave thread resolution to the reviewer.

Merge near-duplicate conversion tests into parametrized tests.
test_matmul_2d_activation_converts, test_matmul_3d_activation_converts and test_matmul_4d_activation_converts differ only in the model builder and the expected adapter nodes. test_gemm_transb_converts and test_gemm_transa_converts also share one structure.
Use @pytest.mark.parametrize with the builder and the expected Unsqueeze/Squeeze presence. The same rule applies to test_matmul_dynamic_weight_not_converted and test_deferred_dynamic_matmul_restores_output_rank, which exercise the same dynamic-weight path in two modes.
As per coding guidelines: "Default to one test per behavior: use @pytest.mark.parametrize instead of near-duplicate test functions".
