Add Conv-based decomposition of fixed-shape, FP32, layout-zero LSTM nodes to the internal DLA sequence. Forward, reverse and bidirectional directions retain sequence and final hidden/cell outputs. Part 9/17 depends on part 8; merge the series from the bottom upward. Public registration follows in part 16.
Optional zero biases carry the correct direction dimension. DQ inputs retain their original quantization layout and controls; rank adaptation applies to their outputs. Shared, public and captured initializer views are preserved, and overridable defaults continue to use runtime values. Model-local operations named LSTM are preserved. Unsupported clipping, including an explicit zero threshold, is refused before mutation. Generated names use the existing allocator, and legacy IR initializer inputs are registered.
Fixed-input rank expansion changes copied initializer metadata without decoding the payload. Constant initial-state convolution folds use bounded row buffers while retaining sequential double accumulation and established rounding. Unit tests execute their graphs without saving debug artifacts into the checkout. Shape preparation reuses the validated native dimensions, reads existing axes by their actual tensor names, normalizes multiple negative axes against the Unsqueeze output rank, and uses the native bias rank when annotations are absent. Supported dtype-preserving producer chains provide the FP32 input contract without an extra inference pass.
This slice extends the internal sequence; the public entry point follows in part 16.
Legacy IR models now discard only pass-created, unused folded LSTM temporaries before registering initializer inputs. Original input/default owners and modern-IR arithmetic remain unchanged. Three omitted-bias/bidirectional cases fail before the fix; the original forward case remains valid. All 80 LSTM tests pass with checked CPU outputs.
Testing
Windows CPU: 2049 passed in 360.69 seconds across the complete restacked graph-surgery and compatibility suite with Python 3.11.18, ONNX 1.23.2 and ONNX Runtime 1.22.0. The public DLA API uses direct ONNX saving; existing initializer conversion and unrelated surgeries are preserved. Commits are signed and all commit hooks pass with the equivalent Linux mypy platform setting. GPU execution, DLA compilation and the complete Linux suite were not run locally.
Necessary tests: included with checked synthetic fixtures and before/after evidence.
Changelog: public feature entry follows in part 16.
Claude approval: pending for the current commit. This remains a draft.

Walkthrough
The change adds a DLA pass that replaces supported standard-domain ONNX LSTM nodes with Conv-based subgraphs. It registers the pass in the DLA transform pipeline and adds tests for output parity, supported inputs, constant folding, and graph handling.
Changes: DLA LSTM Decomposition

Summary
Register and prepare LSTM inputs modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/make_dla_compatible.py, modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/dla_decompose_lstm.py, tests/unit/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/test_dla_decompose_lstm.py
The DLA pipeline registers the pass. The pass validates supported LSTM settings and tensor information, then promotes and prepares inputs. Tests cover unsupported settings and supported input forms.
The pass builds gate and state computations and processes forward, reverse, or bidirectional sequences. Tests compare decomposed outputs with ONNX Runtime.
Restore outputs and fold constants modelopt/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/dla_decompose_lstm.py, tests/unit/onnx/graph_surgery/dla_transforms/test_dla_decompose_lstm.py
The pass restores output layouts, folds eligible constants, and replaces LSTM nodes. Tests cover constant folding, output parity, graph-value handling, and deferred rank conversion.
No actionable merge-blocking defect is established in the current change. The previously reported shared-weight corruption path is fixed.

infer_shapes is imported inside _expect_unsupported_lstm and test_lstm_decompose_ort_cpu_parity. onnxruntime is imported inside _run_ort. Neither import has a comment that names a circular-import or optional-dependency reason. The module already calls pytest.importorskip("onnxruntime") at Line 44, so onnxruntime can be bound there.

Preserve shared DQ source initializers.
Standalone _apply_decompose_lstm promotes W/R and rewrites DQ-backed initializers. Both affected branches remove the source initializer before rewiring only the LSTM's DQ node. If another node also uses that initializer, its input becomes dangling and the transformed ONNX graph is invalid.

Addressed in 66d765f. DQ-backed inputs now preserve the original quantized initializer, DQ node, axis and scale/zero-point controls. Promotion and transposition operate on the DQ result. Nine checked cases cover W/R/B with scalar, positive-axis and negative-axis controls while exposing both source and dequantized views; all fail against the preceding source. Raw public/captured views and runtime initializer overrides are preserved too.

@mgohil-png I inspected 66d765f485. The code addresses this finding: promotion adds Unsqueeze after the DQ result, and transposition no longer rewrites the quantized initializer or DQ node.
The regression test covers all nine W/R/B and scalar/positive-axis/negative-axis combinations. It exposes both source and dequantized outputs and checks model validity and output parity. I inspected the tests but did not run them.
No further change is needed for this finding. Per AGENTS.md, I will leave thread resolution to the reviewer.
